This is my neighbors computer. It's windows XP SP3, with Security Essentials, and MalwareBytes installed. It was infected with the Windows Antivirus Suite. She (or someone) followed the tutorial at Bleeping Computer to remove it. It seems to either have had another infection or the removal only partially worked.

The main screen for WVS no longer shows up, but opening administrator tools and attempting to look at services results in "all services are restricted". You can right click a service and tell it to run as the same user and the services details screen opens.

Malwarebytes refuses to run or install updates, failing with various errors. Super Antispyware fails at "trying to create shortcuts, installation aborted" Internet explorer and firefox and chrome do nothing - no error, no windows, dble click just results in about 2 seconds of hourglass then nothing. They never open.

Attempts to install any app fails. Emsisoft antimalware fails at copying virus defs. Adwcleaner runs but hasn't found anything since the initial scan, Combofix says AVG 2012 (as well as Security Essentials) is also running. Attempts to uninstall AVG 2012 Internet Security using the AVG removal tool fail. All registry modifications seem to fail.

She called me over to take a look and that brings me here. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    L.G. McCaw

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only RogueKiller and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run the rest of the READ & RUN ME FIRST instructions on the infected account.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Here are the logs created. No browsers load. I had to download the tools to a USB stick and copy them to the infected machine. Internet access is not disabled, pings, traceroutes and Hitman all worked. I could not get MalwareBytes to load, during installation it failed when registering the .lnk files, after installation it starts, but crashes out with a Runtime Error 372, Failed to load webbrowser, IEFrame.DLL may be out of date.

    Thanks for the help,

    L.G.

When did the problems begin? I see a few restore points that could possibly be used. Oldest from 02/21/2014.

Based on what I see in the logs it does not appear that remaining problems are due to any malware being present. I would have to question what fixes someone was making to this PC on their own. I see registry patches in the temp folder that were probably getting used and I have no idea if someone applied patches that were not designed for this PC. Also I see that someone ran fixes using ComboFix! Why and where was this performed and under whose instructions??

And I see that Adblock, JRT and possibly more were recently run and no one here requested this.
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\LG\Local Settings\temp\"
    adbloc~1.log Feb 24 2014 7919 "Adblock Plus for IE_20140224123429.log"
    adbloc~2.log Feb 24 2014 2000 "Adblock Plus for IE_20140224123429_0_adblockplusie_1.0_en_us_ia32.msi.log"
    bits.reg Feb 24 2014 4200 "BITS.reg"
    JRT Feb 24 2014 "jrt"
    jrt.txt Feb 24 2014 586 "JRT.txt"
    shared~1.reg Feb 24 2014 4200 "SharedAccess.reg"
    wscsvc.reg Feb 24 2014 4200 "wscsvc.reg"
    wuauserv.reg Feb 24 2014 4200 "wuauserv.reg"
It is possibly that the remnants of other security programs along with MSE are causing problems. I saw signs of AVG in your TDSSKiller log. But I would not expect this to possibly causing internet connection problems not problems with the browsers.

Did someone attempt to use a last known good configuration too???

Let's see if we can cleanup the leftovers with ComboFix. But first, uninstall MSE right now. Also uninstall Malwarebytes.

Now we will run a small fix using ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Repair MSI (Windows Installer)
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

My understanding the problems started several weeks ago. The computer finally got so difficult to use they tried to remedy it themselves. They did a removal of the "windows antivirus pro" tutorial from Bleeping Computer, but
I'm not sure which malware they actually had VS. which they were trying to clean off or which tools they tried to use. I read the tutorial, I think it might have used JRT, but don't remember for sure.
Adblock was some kind of IE extension, I think. It would popup when IE was started. I've uninstalled it from the add/remove programs along with MS Security Essentials, Malwarebytes and some other "crapware" video convertors and toolbars that were installed.
As for combofix, we used it on a prior infection, but I thought it got removed as part of the cleanup. Otherwise I don't have any idea. I also don't know if they tried a "last known good" boot. I booted it into safemode, trying to get Malwarebytes to install.
As per your request, I've run the tools you've requested and will attach the logs. Some progress has been made. IE now opens so at least one browser is operating. Double clicking on any desktop shortcut or clicking on any menu shortcut does nothing. Right clicking on the same shortcut and selecting open from the context menu opens the application.

    Thanks again,
    L.G. McCaw

Okay this sounds like some file associations are broken.

Now run the C:\MGtools\FixFA.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Then reboot the PC. Check to see if there is any change with the shortcuts.

Thanks for the quick response. Things are better, but (there's always a but) Shortcuts on the start menu and desktop still don't execute the app. But, executables on the desktop open and run. For example, I've got Combofix and tdsskiller still on the desktop. dblclick and they run. (I stopped them) I've got a shortcut to adobe reader - it doesn't execute. If I right click the shortcut and select open, the program executes.

    Thanks,

Perhaps you will need to post about the problems with your shorcuts in the Software Forum. If the registy fix I had you run with FixFA.bat did not correct the problem then it is not just a simple file association issue. But just for the heck of it, try running the Windows Repair program again and after it finishes reboot and then run the FixFA.bat program again. Another reboot will be needed at this point to see if there is any change.

If that does not help then it is a Windows setting problem. See the below which may be of use:
