    Hi,

    I have a HP Probook 4530s (RAM = 3 GB), running genuine Windows 8 (64-bit)...

Almost two weeks ago, after my laptops start up, performing any basic operations (like opening folders) took several minutes if they ever started at all... Restarting wasn't an option because it took too long to get to the restart button, but even after force shutdowns the problem persisted.

I installed Spybot 2 to scan my laptop, and after the scan was completed, no major problems were found, but my laptop was usable again. After that I had a business trip so I did not shut down my laptop for a week, because the problem would returned with every start up.

After preforming the Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure I noticed that after 20-30 minutes after start up, my laptop performance returns to seemingly normal. The problem started about the time I installed Winamp. I have uninstalled it last week. I also uninstalled Spybot 2 and my only AV is Windows Defender.

The Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure logs are attached as instructed. I can't find the MB log, but it didn't find any problems while scanning.

    Please help,
    NV

PS - I am a programmer so I do use a lot of programs and I need them all, everything is very organized, my start up apps are reduced to the minimum necessity, and I know enough to know something's not right...

Hello there. Everything looks to be as it should. Are you currently experiencing any malware-like behaviour? Or is it as you say, running normally again? :)

Hello, thank you for taking the time.

After the start up and its 20 min "freeze" followup, the laptop performance returns to normal. The only thing that might be related is that when I have multiple "powerful" programs running, the performance seems a bit slower then it use to be in the same conditions. Other then that I can use it normally, but the "freeze" period after the start up is not acceptable :)

The start up is still fast - the log in screen appears within 20 sec, but when I get to the desktop I have to wait 20 min (at best) to start using my laptop normally, because any activity before that just freezes the screen and cursor for a few minutes and the activity gets completed after the freeze time has passed...

What do you think what could cause something like this ?

I do not believe all the below running at start up is helping matters any, (see what you think) and run the following and see if it helps.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SwitchBoard] C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\SwitchBoard\SwitchBoard.exe

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Reboot.

    Any improvement?

Because after a reboot these sneaky softwares will put themselves back into start up. Tsk tsk. I suggest that you turn to a third party software such as: Start up CPL downloadable right here at Majorgeeks. That should serve you better. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Press and hold the Windows key [IMG] and then press the letter R on your keyboard. This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below into the Run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    5. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove, you can delete these files now.
    8. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
