Malware problem, related to 'Desktop Security 2010'

Well, I'm at the end of my rope here. I accidentally wound up with the malware 'Desktop Security 2010' on my laptop, and it's causing all kinds of hell that I can't get rid of, it's seriously stressing me out.

I followed various guides that would supposedly get rid of it, none worked. I've tried Malwarebyte's anti-malware, SpyBot Search and Destroy, SpyWare Doctor as well as running my usual AVG scans, nothing has worked.

I've managed to at least stop the bogus program itself from running by deleting all the folders I could find related to it and getting rid of it from Add/Remove programs, as well as deleting it as a startup process via CCleaner.

Now though, even though I've got rid of the program itself (as far as I can tell), I'm still getting a lot of problems. My laptop is slower to boot up than usual (despite having stopped Desktop Security 2010 as a startup process), and when Windows does boot up, I get the red shield icon in the bottom right telling me 'Your computer is at risk, automatic updates are turned off'. Before, the program kept turning off my firewall, but that seems to have stopped since I did the aforementioned actions.

Now, this leads me to the main issue (aside from slower startup)- every 1-2 minutes, my AVG gives a popup saying that a threat or multiple threats have been detected. No matter what I do, these detected threats keep popping up constantly:

They're all basically like that, just with a different number.

These just keep building up and up, and I really just don't know what to do. I saw an FAQ that told the exact registry locations, but the malware files mentioned didn't even seem to be there on my laptop.

Please help, I'm at a loss as to what to do, besides a total tear-down reformat, which I'd really rather avoid.

Oh, and I'm on 32-bit Windows XP.

Matter has been resolved now, please don't concern it any more. Thanks. ;3

Ugh, sorry to bump unintentionally, but it looks like the problem hasn't been solved after all. =/

I've suddenly started getting a few unwanted 'security alerts' on my system again.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thanks for the reply.

Ran through the XP Cleaning Procedure mentioned elsewhere on this site again (first time didn't quite catch everything) and, fingers crossed, everything seems okay for now.

Hopefully nothing will come back again. If the problems resurface I'll start from scratch and log everything as suggested.

    Thanks!

Or you could attach the logs to have me confirm that all is okay. If you choose not to do this, then you can follow the below:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks again for replying!

Unfortunately I deleted the logs once everything was working okay (perhaps a bit pre-emptive of me, I know). Like I said, this was the second time I followed the XP Cleaning Procedure, because I was still having problems after that. Thankfully the second time seemed to solve everything.

As you suggest, I've already removed all the various tools that were used for the cleaning process.

I'm not currently having any problems, but can I just ask that this topic is left open for a few more days, just to be sure? In the event that any more problems relevant to this should occur in the next few days, I'll redo the cleaning process and post full logs here. Hopefully though, everything should be okay for now.

Thanks for your support and concern, and apologies for having deleted the log files so readily.

Yes I suppose it wouldn't hurt to leave this thread open for you :)

    Thanks. :3

I'll give it a few days to a week, if I don't have anything funny happen with my laptop in that time, I'll assume (hope!) everything's okay. After all, I thought things had been solved initially, but they came back. It's been running fine for longer now, though.

I'll be back with logs if the same malware shows any signs of rearing it's ugly head again from somewhere within the depths of my laptop. Like I said before, hopefully that won't be the case. :)

    Thanks again!

    Hey there again. :)

Unfortunately I've had my AVG detect a couple of threats at random last night. Nothing as relentlessly difficult as before, but I still thought I'd best re-run the XP cleaning procedure and post logs this time.

I took a shot of the threat once it had been moved to my AVG virus vault, too:

SuperAntiSpyWare and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware came up clean, which I'm hoping is a good sign. Even so, I'm posting the logs anyway.

    1. Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode, if you haven't done so already.

    2. Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:
    • Messenger Plus! Live <--- installing this will open you up to lop infections amongst others they decide to bundle in with the software.
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 14

    3. Did you set this yourself?

    4. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\qjtlep.exe
    c:\windows\system32\rjqxgbl.exe
    DirLook::

    Folder::
    c:\program files\Spyware Doctor
    Registry::

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    5. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    7. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Okay, done everything listed. :)

Didn't have any problems doing everything, although can I ask- is it okay to reinstall Messenger Plus Live now, or would you advise against it? I must admit it does have a few useful features (namely grouping all chats in a single tabbed window)- or is there another way to do that?

Yes, I did set the homepage you mentioned myself, although it should be noted that I use Google Chrome as my default browser, with a homepage that I also set.

Logs are attached. Everything seems to be okay for now, only time will tell though. I'll let you know.

Thanks for the help so far. :)

:-D No! I know it's an all dancing all singing bells and whistle type add on that you more than likely love, but continuing it's use will reinvite infection/nuisance adware onto your system. And then you are going to come back here and post for help again ;)
