i was in the middle of Step 3 of the vista version of the malware removal process, and when it says to doubleclick mgtools.exe and it says "It will not automatically start running scripts to get logs" mine started running a command prompt and running things at speed... is that running scripts? should it not have done that?

how do you edit a post? i can't see it anywhere, in any case, to clarify, it's in the malware removal guide, on the mgtools instructions page which say the bit about "It will not automatically start running scripts to get logs"

before i could get to those steps, the command module came up and did some business, and cut right to the trend micro agreement step, which i agreed to and allowed. my question was does a cmmand prompt constitute "running scripts" ? [my UAC had been set to the correct level]

What information did you see in that command prompt window?

Did you see "GetLogs.bat - (c) 10/02/2006 By Chaslang" followed by:
    • Running scan with GetUnkeys.Bat
    • Running scan with ShowNew.Bat
    • etc..
Did you see after about 5 minutes
    • *** Scanning complete - Your log file is C:\MGlogs.zip ***

    Was the C:\MGlogs.zip created???

    Step 4 malware removal post

It started when I attempted to install either street fighter flash executable or doom flash executable games (doom did not work and street fighter even after installation required net+browser when I wanted a standalone). I have a reasonable sense of what's safe and what isn't on the net but for these two games I went against my better judgement. So, now my computer slows to short but crippling standstills when I open Internet Explorer. Sometimes it goes away when I close Internet Explorer, sometimes I have to restart. Also, it may have happened without opening IE after a restart.

I have a 64bit windows hence only three logs

    assistance appreciated

    Hello, dkk

I'm not seeing any real malware in your logs - but also don't see any anti-virus protection either.

    Step 1:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 2:
Now download Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.5 and save to a location you will be able to find such as your desktop
    1. Run sar_15_sfx by double clicking on it.
    2. Click Accept to agree to the EULA
    3. Click Install (if you wish to change the default installation location do so here but remember where you install to, the default is C:\SOPHTEMP)
    4. Once it finishes copying files, exit the installer

    Running the scan
    1. Navigate to the location that you installed the software to (Default: C:\SOPHTEMP)
    2. Run the sargui Application by double clicking on it. (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    3. Ensure that all three of the options are checked
    4. Click Start Scan
    5. Once the scan is complete, close Sophos Anti-Rootkit by closing the scan window and clicking Exit in the main window

Do NOT click 'CLEAN UP CHECKED ITEMS' or attempt to have Sophos Anti-Rootkit fix anything unless specifically instructed.

    Finding the logs
    1. Click on Start --> Run
    2. Type in %TEMP%\sarscan.log and press enter
    3. The log file will open in the default editor (probably Notepad)
    4. Click File --> Save As and save the file to your desktop or other location for easy retrieval.

    Step 3:
Please run the below scanner and post the results:

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

    Step 4:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please post the ESET scan results and attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip and the sarscan.log files to your next reply.

Now clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop.

    Double-click TFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
    • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
    • Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
    • Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.
Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

    * Tell me what malware problems are you still experiencing?

the problem is still happening after all that, so what it is is that i start up my computer, everything is fine for maybe 10 or 15 minutes but then it alternates between a debilitating semifreeze for upto a minute or more or less, and a barely workable slow slowness both in processing and internet speed

There's nothing in your logs to indicate that this is malware related. I suggest that you seek help futher help in our Software or Networking forums.

It is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

can i ask about the doom .exe i installed? it all started right at the time i installed it... aren't .exe's good places for viruses or something?

An executable file is basically another name for a program and yes - they can be infected or be the infection, themselves.

A search of your logs didn't reveal any references to Doom or Street Fighter.
