I accadentally / on purpose, disabled all my startups and services via msconfig. And now nearly nothing works... I am now attempting to fix the problem by running " services.msc " and enableing (and hopefully fixing everything, I however will be setting all the "Startup Type(s)" to "Automatic" Which I don't think is a good thing, anyway I could use any tools/ advice you could offer to fix my problem as soon as possible.

Never seen everything off (including services) before but I think System Restore is your Geek.

Yes, first thing I considered. However I never created a system restore point ever so... doing so is less then problematic. Also I already know of the blackviper and service links:
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
    But thanks anyway...
Is there a quick fix program that could enable everything for me? I've still only got nearly 1/3 of all services started.:(
Also I should add ctrl + alt + delete no longer functions properly it now only shows a blown up version of the cpu useage indicator.

That sounds like "tiny footprint" mode, try clicking on the border or edges of it and see if it returns to normal mode.

Ahh thanks steve, you were right. ;)

    UPDATE.
I've been at it for a while now and i've re enabled most of everything, nortons is running again as well as some other crummy programs... after i'm done enableing everything. I'll go back to blackviper to change/ remove the unwanted process. (since i'm up to eighty five process right now) I should be good... but i'm still ISO a quick fix if one is available.

You can check the link below. I just scanned it so not sure which one you are looking for, but I would guess Complete Default Windows XP Service Pack 2 Services Configuration:

Yeah i've already been there (you can see in my earlier posts) and I plan on going back once the system starts to function normally. There should really be a HJT version of services.msc that way someone could run program X and have it produce a log file of all your services, then someone else could tell you what ones to disable, or better yet a program that makes that decision for you. :D

Well after much work, my system has reached normality I was hopeing to go above and byond but after following the blackviper service advicements to the letter I STILL have 70 background process! Most of them are system files, and the rest are things for Norton and other nesessary apps. Oh ell, normal is good enough for now. :)
Thanks All, even thoe I did most of the work >.<

For whatever its worth. Get rid of norton's. That is by far the worst of the worst when it comes to virus protection. Get avg or avast. They do a much better job protecting your computer and don't take near the resources.

Run this free scan. Works great. http://www.processlibrary.com/processscan/ See whats going on with your puter. You can also get this handy free tool I use and find big time useful. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cprocess.html . One last thing, get this. http://www.windowsstartup.com/ This will tell ya what starts when your computer starts and you have better control of it. Hope this helps.

Yeah I have to agree Nortons is a bit of a recourse hog, and still wimps out on protection. But i'm wondering which is better as far as protection goes avast or AVG?

Personally I like avg. So do alot of others. At the same time there are plenty of satisfied and happy users of avast. They are both free. Both work well. I would say pick one and try it and see what you think.

Well, my system seems to be advanced enough to handle all the extra processes even with 72 process running my computer still has a over all performance ranging between 0-4% (absolute max). So I may as well continue to use Nortons until it expires, from what I've learned it does offer superior virus protection. It's worked well enough for me, even deleting viruses as they're being downloaded.

Heres something, I've converted to Firefox and I was wondering what are the Geek recommended settings/ add ons for it. :)
    Thanks.

BTW... After this whole problem was resolved I for some reason now have an added 2 GB of hard drive space, I cant say I know why though, but I can say I like it. :D
