I removed a number of trojans from my Windows 7 PC but lost all network connectivity. I am unable to leave my homegroup to rejoin and services like DHCP will not start upon reboot. I have deleted and reinstalled both winsock and TCP/IP v4 to no avail. Help!:cry

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Completed the Malware removal process. Logs attached. Still no internet connection. Rogue Killer created a RKQuarantine folder in addition to an RKreport.txt file but I am not attaching it- if you need that file also- let me know. System is still UAC disabled & AV disabled.

    Please disable Spybot's TeaTimer.

    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    Did you knowingly install this?

    • Advertising Center

Re run Hitman and have it delete Suspicious files.

Download the following files to your desktop.
    Dhcp.reg
    NetBIOS.reg

    • Now please click Start, and type regedit into the search box.
    • You should see a regedit.exe and icon appear in the Programs area of the Start Menu.
    • Right click on regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator
    • Then in the Registry Editor menu click File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the Dhcp file saved to your Desktop and double click it. Allow it to be added to the registry. Repeat this for the NetBIOS.reg file.

    Reboot the machine.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

I just had a thought.... open up services, and look for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service if it shows. If, so, let me know it's start up type and status please.

FYI: You can already see all this in miscinfo.txt The problems is not with BITS, the problem is with afd.sys. You need to remember to look at nwktst.txt and check the files sizes and MD5 codes. Did you notice the file size of afd.sys ???????

Please download Combofix to your desktop. Ensure that your antivirus/antispyware is disabled before running the below script.

Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-winsock-core_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_360e4801750ca991\afd.sys | C:\Windows\System32\drivers\AFD.SYS

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Ran Combofix with the requested CFScript (log attached)
    Ran MGTools GetLogs.bat (log attached)

Even though AVG was disabled- it gave me a popup in the middle of running Combofix saying it was not so I reran it after re-disabling it and it ran to completion (no popup) but rebooted both times to create the log. I attached the second log also as Combofix2.

Are you saying Firefox AND internet explorer do not work, or that Firefox works, but Internet Explorer doesn't?

    What's in these folders?

    c:\users\njmathews\AppData\Roaming\Egdere
    c:\users\njmathews\AppData\Roaming\Dixex

What error are you having with the Windows Update...?

    Firefox works
Neither version of IE on my machine works
There is nothing in the c:\users\njmathews\AppData\Roaming\Egdere
The only thing in c:\users\njmathews\AppData\Roaming\Dixex is obcee.izu 22KB

BITS needed to be turned on for Windows Updates- it looks like a bunch of services are now set to 'manual' instead of automatic but I can fix that.

Be careful!!! Many services are supposed to be manual including BITS. Services are not the same in all versions of Windows. You may want to check out the below before you start changing services. The is a direct link to BITS where you can see different tabs for each version of Windows.

    http://www.blackviper.com/windows-services/background-intelligent-transfer-service/

You can find all the other services too.

I suggest that you post about it in the software forum. All signs of malware are now gone. You can delete those folders I pointed out to you though.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Press and hold the Windows key [IMG] and then press the letter R on your keyboard. This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below into the Run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    5. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove, you can delete these files now.
    8. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
