Password Manager

  1. Hello Geeks,

I have a client that is 82 years old and is having memory issues, so she put a single password for everything from her windows login to her bank account password which is very dangeous I am looking for a program that can manage different passwords for every account she has to increase the security of her information. I was looking at Keepass and was wondering if anyone has used it or if there is another one out there.

Many folks still believe the best "password keeper" is the old pen and notepad.

How about giving Lastpass a chance.;)

True, but "if" this isn't the case, my suggestion still stands, at least until we hear differently.

  6. Yes writing it down is not an option she just kicked out her daughter that has been know for bank fraud LastPast or Keepass is what I'm thinking

Another method is to keep the info in a word document or spreadsheet and encrypt it with encryption software on your computer. This gets around the worry of keeping all your secret info in the cloud, as LastPass does. Not sure how KeePass stores it. I use Cryptainer and would recommend this method for users who find LastPass, with all its settings, a little intimidating.

But encryption relies on a password to be able to unencryppt, correct?

Yes, of course, but only the one.

Exactly like a password manager - one password to remember.

Now the question is, which would be more secure? I use neither because I don't need this so I haven't a clue.

If I felt the need, I'd simply make a text file and use 7-zip to zip it up and password protect it. Making sure I had a very strong, very long password.
The problem with doing this is that someone with memory problems might forget to zip up the text file when finished so anyone with access to the computer would see the passwords in the plain text file. So it isn't good for someone with memory problems.

Let's be honest - ppl who are likely to forget to correctly close down a password manager shouldn't be using the internet for banking etc in the first place.

Keepass stores data locally whereas Lastpass stores data in the cloud.

The KeeFox add-on integrates Keepass with the Firefox browser.
KeeFox does not work with Pale Moon. You have to use PassIFox addon which requires the KeePassHttp plugin.

Neither of those will work with Firefox 57, to be released in November 2017, and later versions of Firefox because they are not WebExtensions.

The latest versions of the LastPass add-on, 4.x.x, have had a problem with an unresponsive script error that occurs every time the browser starts.
The error has been reported many times but has persisted for months through all of the 4.x versions.
Supposedly, version 4.x.x will be compatible with Firefox 57+.
LastPass addon version 3.3.4 does work without the script error, but this version is obsolete and contains some vulnerabilities. (??)
LastPass version 4.x.x is not compatible with Pale Moon.

I had been using LastPass, but because there have been problems with the new versions, I've been looking for something else.
I wanted something that would be compatible with both Firefox (64-bit) and Pale Moon (32-bit) browsers.

I have been using Sticky Password for the last several days with Pale Moon and it has worked quite well.
I do not have Firefox installed, but it works with Firefox portable.
It is quite easy to use.
I turned OFF automatic login which is ON by default.
I have autofill ON which is the default setting.
Both of those are in the General Settings portion of Sticky Password settings.

There is an easy tutorial included with the program.
It runs when the program is started, but this can easily be turned off and accessed later On Demand.

You guys need to remember that the "client" who is needing this is 82 years old, and suffering from memory loss. With no disrespect to her/him, I'm not sure if many of the suggestions would be too difficult/confusing, to understand!

Clearly this doesn't affect all systems as I've been running LastPass for well over 2 years on both a laptop and a PC in Firefox and, more recently Edge, and have not experienced any errors at all. Currently on version 4.1.45

Sticky Password is the easiest password manager I have ever used.
I think we all assumed that you would be setting it up for your client.

  16. Yes and she has her son next door that will have all the information and master password for the file if she forgets so there is another person involved that can help. I will be setting it up for her so it's simple to comprehend. Thanks for all the suggestions.
