    need help installing Sun Java

    HI,
I am begining to work my way through the steps in READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide.
I downloaded the new version of Sun Java.
I used Add/Delete to uninstall my old version of Java.
But when I double click on the downloaded file
    to install the new version:
jre-6u5-windows-j586-p. exe I get only an
    error message:
not a valid Windows 32bit program.

I downloaded another version of the file from
a different location, but the same error message comes up.
I have Windows XP service pack 1, IE 6. And I downloaded
the file through my aol 9 SE browser.

At this point I have no Java on my machine.

Re: need help installing Sun Java

update on installing Sun Java :

I downloaded the Sun Java file for the 3rd time,
this time through IE 6 instead of through aol.

(apparently aol 9 SE was making the downloaded files
corrupt in some way. Also, aol will not let me
post to this board. So, I am using IE directly for
    use of this forum .)

The downloaded file is valid now, BUT,
I get a warning that my system
(XP Service pack 1) is not a supported operating
system for this version of Sun Java. I am told that I
may continue to install the Sun Java, but I would
have best results with XP SP 2.

Please let me know if it is okay if
I install Sun Java on my XP SP1 system.

    Thanks
    Andreanna

I am attempting to follow the RUN and READ steps,
and I downloaded the new Sun Java.

However, I get the following message when I start to install it
    to my Windows XP machine:

"This is not a supported operating system.....
You may continue to install, but best rests are
    seen with Windows SP2, ...."

And I found this information on the
    Sun Developer Network website about
    system compatibility:

"Note: Trying to install the J2SE Runtime Environment on a non-supported version of Microsoft Windows or on a machine that doesn't have a sufficiently up-to-date Service Pack will cause the installer to generate this warning: "We recommend that you do not install this Java platform for the following reasons: This Java platform does not support the operating system or operating-system service pack on this machine."

I fear I may not be compatible for using this new
    version of Sun Java.

I have Windows XP Service Pack 1.

Should I procede with installation of the
    new Sun Java?

I have uninstalled my old version of Java as instructed.

    Please advise.

    Thanks
    Andreanna

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You should be okay! The PC I'm currently posting this message from is running XP SP1 and has Sun Java 1.6.0.5 (the current version) running.

NOTE: You should avoid posting additional message in your thread once you post. You loose your position in the work queue making it take longer to get an answer. See another one of our sticky threads explaining this: Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!
