Hello. I'm running a 1 GHz Mobile PIII with 256 MB RAM, a 30 GB hard drive, Windows 2000 Pro SP4, IE version 6.0.2800.1106. The system also has Norton's Corporate Antivirus. I had previously immunized with SpyBot S&D. Yesterday, I started getting many spontaeous browser popups, and a toolbar from Mirar showed up in the browser. I uninstalled it with add/remove programs.

Then I found this site. I have followed your tutorial on malware cleaning, and the problem still remains, although the Mirar toolbar is gone.

The following happened when I did the tutorial - Windows Defender will not update. The definitions from 190 days ago show clean. Ran the getrunkey and shownew files, and will attach logs in a reply if wanted. Ran CCleaner, Spybot S&D, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool, all in safe mode, with nothing found.

Ran Bitdefender and Pandasoft with logs of what was found attached.

Installed Hijack this per your instructions, in correct folder, and renamed. Attached is a HJT log as well.

Can anyone help me to stop these popups and clean my system? I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

    Thanks in advance.

Please downloadThe Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
    • Double click on Avenger.zip to open the file and extract avenger.exe to your Desktop
    • Copy the below quoted text (which is a script for Avenger) into your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing
      CTRL+C
    • Now, run The Avenger program by double clicking its icon on your Desktop.
    • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
    • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
    • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
    • Click Done
    • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
    • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
The Avenger will automatically do the following:
    • It will Restart your computer. (When the script being executed contains "Drivers to Unload",
The Avenger will actually reboot your system two times.)
    • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
    • After the reboot, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log
file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
    • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped
them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
Please attach the c:\avenger.txt file to your next message.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: IEHooks Class - {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000240} - C:\Program Files\ClearSearch\IE_ClrSch.DLL (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: Kweaj Class - {DFE7D27E-C021-4C72-80F3-254B776E0992} - C:\WINNT\system32\ubbv.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E199C2AF-6CD5-4F3A-BD99-A47646D591F4} - C:\Program Files\Windows NT\megobanu.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Inet Delivery] C:\Program Files\Inet Delivery\inetdl.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [defender] C:\\dfndrff_7.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [keyboard] C:\\kybrdff_7.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ACTX1] C:\WINNT\v1201.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xload] "C:\WINNT\xload.exe"
    O16 - DPF: {886DDE35-E955-11D0-A707-000000881958} - http://69.56.176.75/webplugin.cab
    O18 - Filter: text/html - {F8D76886-FA88-4DF6-8FBD-C02CF8C91C94} - C:\WINNT\system32\ubbv.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Program Files\Inet Delivery <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\ClearSearch <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{70D599FA-04AC-1033-0301-040001} <-- the whole folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Also download the latest version of ShowNew (it has changed since you last used it) and attach a new log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thanks. Have performed all steps indicatead, with Avenger.txt and new HJT log attached.

Two things - when I went to delete the three full folders, I could not find any of them. I verified that viewing of hidden files was enabled, but could not find those folders. I even searched for the names, but nothing exact came up.

When I rebooted, a single spontaneous IE window popped up, but since then, none have come. It's been about 5 minutes, so I'm thinking none will be forthcoming, since they appeared pretty regularly before.

FYI - I just had another browser window pop up in the last minute.

Do you use Scotia OnLine Recovery? I'm referring to the below line:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [USPTO Direct Recovery] "C:\Program Files\USPTO\etdirrcv.exe"

Which may or may not be this: http://www.castlecops.com/s3229-etdirrcv_exe.html

You tell me if it is something you know and use.

    Hi again.

Followed the EWIDO procedure, and have attached log. However, I could find no "options" availability to uncheck the two things that were supposed to be unchecked, either in installation or otherwise. Also attached new HJT log per the EWIDO procedure.

As for the Scotia Online Recovery, the folder USPTO is for a secure program that I use for work. I don't know it as Scotia Online Recovery, but it does use "Entrust" with a secure key for access to the online database, so my guess is that one is absolutely fine. The entrust program uses digital certificates, and I have used it for a year or so.

I also note that I have been up and running for a full 45 minutes now with no popup windows, including none at startup, which had been happening.

Thanks a bunch! No more problems. Am working through the remainder of what I didn't have before in the protection link.
