Program files appear empty

My machine was infected so I read and ran the Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedures. They appear to have been successful however I apparently have what I hope is only residual damage. When I click on start menu no programs appear. If I click on my programs they are listed but each one says it is empty and won't open. If I do a search for Outlook it will open or if I want the internet I do a search for Firefox and it will open, but how do I restore these programs back into the start menu and be able to open them as before?

I am so thankful for this site and all that you are doing to fight the malicious attackers. I got this malware doing a search for a grid for graph paper for my son's school project! I guess they lurk everywhere.

Your help and insight will be greatly appreciated.

If you have done the Read and Run First instructions, please attach the requested logs:
    SAS
    MBAM
    RootRepeal --- if it runs..
    ComboFix
    C:\MGLogs.zip

I did run combo fix last night too but I can not find the log now. I tried to re-run it tonight but it seems to be having a problem running. I did disable SpySweeper and the SuperAntiSpyware edition before running it. The other files are attached.

    Thank you-

I am not finding any malware in your logs. You do need to clean out these folders:
    C:\Windows\TEMP\
    C:\Users\Dennis\AppData\Local\Temp

    Please do this:
    TDSSkiller - How to run

Now, download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Run the exe. Look in the C:\MGTools folder and right click and run as administrator this file:
    FixAttr.bat

Tell me how things are running then.

Tonight, I emptied the files you suggested and followed the other instructions as well. I could not find the file fixattr.bat in the tools folder however.

Let me back up to last night, I took a chance and did a restore to 5/7/11 which was the day before I had encountered a pop up (fake) which began a scan of my PC. That is when I believe the malware was encountered. So I did the restore and everything appeared to be back to a good working machine. I went ahead and went through the read me first instructions from the very beginning. I concluded by disabling the restore function and re-booting and I have since re-enabled it.

So as of right now it seems to be a good working machine again. I'm not sure why I am not seeing the fixattr.bat file, however. The first on the list of fix's is fixacls.bat and then it jumps to fixbagle.reg

Let me know if you think I am missing something or if it is fairly safe to call it fixed.

    Thank you!

Then perhaps it would be wise to attach the logs for TimW.

You will still need to clean out those two temp folders. Otherwise, things look fine.

Did you download and install the latest version of MGTools? It should have had the fixAtt.bat in it.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
