    Okay (counting to 10) here's my problem/s...
I am the ONLY user of my laptop. It is 5 months old and is an Acer Aspire. I have Windows Vista.
About a week ago, I uninstalled Avira (free)...I then tried to install Avast (free). It never did. I re-installed Avira...
From that moment on, I tried to install SuperAntiSpyware and I got this message when right clicking on it...Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file,. You may not have the appropriate permissions to acess the item.
I then tried to do a scan in safe mode with MalwareBytes. I got the SAME message when I clicked on it.
What was happening, I realized, that it seemed to be just a folder instead on the company's ICON.
Now, for some reason, when I check my Windows Security. It is telling me that ALL of the security checks are ON. Even when I click it, it tells me Avast ir up to date and running. Now, I used to have the icons sitting beside my clock on the taskbar. They don't do that anymore either. When I click START and right click to send the program to the desktop, all I get is a 'folder' icon and that darn message.
I get nervous about this. I am from Scotland and communicate a lot thru the UK, thru emails, IMs, newspapers and radio. I have been doing that forever. So, I worry one day I'll get up, and have nothing there.
I told a my space friend this problem and she passed it on to her husband, who is a member here, who told me about you people.
So, after registering the other day, I tried to download your MGTools. Again, I got that message and just a folder icon. I tried to download SAS from here and the same thing. I tried to download your Device Scanner, same thing. On and on it goes.
I am at my wit's end. I know I am a Royal Pain in the Neck, but, this so far seems like an extremely decent place, with extremely decent people, so I await with baited breath for some sort of answer or help to make sense out of this 'mess and stress.'
I hope I have explained this problem to you all in a fashioanble way. I must thank TeeCee for her patience, kindness and humor towards me.
Phew, I am now going to have a very, very large glass of (wait for it) cranberry juice! (lol)
Thank you for 'listening' to me. I appreciate it.

I have moved your thread to the malware section.

You would normally need to wait your turn in the work order, but you can get started with this.

    Please try doing the below:

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then doube click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running.

    Now download and Run exeHelper

    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:

    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools

The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

Thank you so much for the response, Tim. I am running SAS online scan right now. I think the other few instructions have worked as 'something' is on my desktop.
But, sorry to say, I don't understand this instruction:

The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

    T/y
ps: I am running SAS and just before I ran it, I got this message: The Publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run thsi software?

Your C:\drive is typically where all your programs are. Open my computer and you should see the icon for the C: drive....you can double click that to see what all is on that drive.

You can accept the software....this is a typical pop up for vista.

I actually worked it out that, that was what you meant. I have an Avira folder in there and when I tried to DELETE it, I got this message. 'You need permission to perform this action...'

Please download MGtools and save it to your C:\ drive. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Double click the exe. Let it run to completion...if it doesnt run, tell me exactly what happens.

    And also attach the c:\avplog.txt

It will just not allow me to run it. When I click on the MGTools that you gave me, this is exactly what happens.

    1. Opening MGTools.exe
    2. I click on save file
    3. I then go to, START, documents
    4. I then double click on MGTools (an icon, like Superman)
    5. Then I get a box which says: Open File - Security Warning
    6. 'The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you wabt to run this software?'
    7. I click 'run.'
    8. For about a milli second there's a flash of a black screen with white type on it and disappears like greased lightning!

    That's it. :confused:confused:confused

You are running Vista and need to follow the instructions for running MGTools in Vista.

You have the "superman" icon on your desktop. Open my computer, double click the C:\ drive to open it, then click on the "superman" icon on your desktop and drag it to a free area on the C:\ drive window. Now right click the "superman" icon and choose "Run as Administator". Wait till it tells you it is finished. Then attach the C:\MGLogs.zip

I followed your instructions and now have MGTools icon in my 'C' drive. But, I got the same problems from the previous post I sent you. Steps 5 thru 8...

    Oh boy.

Do you get to see your Doctor for free and is he treating everyone in the world?

If you read the stickies as was required and requested, you would know that your bumping is what costing you addtional delay. RE: Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!

Back in message # 2, TimW asked you to attach the c:\avplog.txt log from running AVPFInd.bat. Then again he asked you to attach it in message #10. You still have not attached this.

Also if you are running Vista, did you follow the instructions for disabling UAC as was requested in the Using MGtools instructions.
