    Hello,
I have a hard drive that is failing in an old desktop pc. I did get a replacement hard drive for it and installed Windows XP Home SP2 with a clean install on that new hard drive but there are lots of files that are not there - nothing is listed in the add / remove section of the control panel and I am certain that the .net framework as well as Microsoft C++ are not listed.

I thought that it all went well on the install and Windows is working just fine but when I went to install the driver for my linksys router so that I could connect to the internet it will not connect and it seems to be stuck at looking for / renewing the ip address.

Anyway, both hard drives are IDE and I do have an extra bay in the dell desktop. Is it possible to install the failing hard drive as a slave and copy all the necessary files/folders to the new hard drive.

When I did this I did not have the Dell disk for the new install so I got a different Windows XP with sp2 and used that do the install but by doing that I am pretty sure that I will also need to download & install the necessary drivers as well.

I did come across a program called DriverMax and there was also another site that has a batch file at http://www.pcworld.com/article/151125/how_do_i_back_up_my_drivers.html which is supposed to back up all your files (drivers) so that you can put them on the new hard drive. Will that work?

    TIA

I already did the clean install onto the other hard drive. Should I wipe the drive clean and then clone the old drive onto the new one?

I did notice that the new / clean install has taken up much less space on the hard drive than the space taken up on the old hard drive (I think there might be a lot of junk from old software and stuff - the pc was given to me and it is running windows xp home with all the updates and there really isn't anything else installed on it anymore but there are at least 8GB of space used on that hard drive which is why I think that there must be lots of leftover junk here and there).

As I had stated I didn't have the installation disks from Dell which is why I did a new/clean install but now I don't have all the drivers and such so I guess making a clone onto the new one is going to be my best bet - I just wish I didn't have all that wasted stuff on there (and I have no idea what can and can't be deleted in the C:\ folder and what is just laying around in the registry).

    Thanks!

If you are just concerned about not having the Dell software/drivers for your machine, if you can give me the make and model or even better the service tag #(this will be on a sticker usually on the right hand of the tower casing), I will be able to point you straight to them so you can download and save to disc or flashdrive ready to install, to Install them properly please follow this order.....

    1. Chipset Driver.
    Re-Boot
    2. VGA Driver.
    Re-Boot
    3. Audio Driver.
    Re-Boot
    4. LAN Driver.
    Re-Boot
    5. Install Internet Security/Antivirus and Malware protection, (you can find quite alot of free ones available here.... http://majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html ... http://majorgeeks.com/downloads29.html) , my personal favourite is Comodo Internet Security 5.4 (free)... http://majorgeeks.com/downloads29.html excellent full security suite that is very light on system resources, I also use Malwarebytes (free) as a back up scanner ... http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free ... the only downfall with this is that you have to manually update the definition files before running a scan, but it is brilliant at finding malware/viruses that may have slipped past the main security, though I have not encountered any issues with malware/virus infections with this combination installed.
    6. Go back to the Dell download page for your machine and install any other software/drivers that are required for your model.
    7. Windows updates.

Ccleaner is about the safest system/ Reg cleaner available.... http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_d4191.html ... Do Not tinker with any of the default settings , take a look at this thread to see how to use it ..... http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=240166

Well, to be perfectly honest it looks like I am going to have to do it the hard way since the hard drive died while installing the software to clone the drive itself.

As for the service tag # it is D7NJ911
and it is a Dimension 4400 desktop pc running Windows xp home.

I did go to the Dell site and entered the service tag number but there are lots of different drivers listed and I am not sure which ones to select.

I did notice in the device manager for the modem does not state Conexant HSF v92 56k data fax pci modem which is what was listed on the original hard drive (which may explain why I can't connect to the internet - but I'm only guessing on that one).

The information for the Network adapters on the old (dead) hard drive stated SMC EZ Card 10/100 (SMC 1255TX) - haven't checked to see what is listed there since I did an install of windows xp home sp2 on the new hard drive.

I honestly don't know exactly which drivers would be needed and I did try using the driver backup suggested on http://www.pcworld.com/article/151125/how_do_i_back_up_my_drivers.html but that didn't fix the internet connection issue.

As of right now, I am guessing that I am going to need to be able to connect to the internet on that pc in order to get lots of stuff that is missing (and I don't realize just yet) especially the windows updates. Fortunately I do have my laptop so that I can download the drivers from that and then copy the drivers to a flash drive.

Thanks So Very Much for all your assistance.

Ok I see what you mean when you say that you are not sure of which one to choose :-D:-D

please could you run everest, download and save it to a flash drive or cd off your laptop then run it on the machine that needs the drivers save the log as detailed below and save it to flashdrive or cd to upload from your laptop ..... http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
Choose System Summary Only > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop is best as easy place to find it, use Browse to locate desktop)

Add the report in your next post like this.....

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

this will point me to the correct drivers for you and list the ones you need for your system.

I can do that. I'll download it and put the download onto a flash drive and then put it on the dell machine and run the program and then transfer the report back onto the flash drive to paste it here.

Will be back after I have done those things. Thanks so Very Much.

Okay, I installed the everest download onto the Dell and followed the steps you gave me and here is the report: (just a note - not sure why it is stating "Smart Hard Disk Status - Fail. it is an older hard drive that I have replaced it with but before putting it in the Dell I installed it into an HP desktop and ran the Seatools Diagnostic Test on it and it passed the tests.)

    Hello Again,

I have been going over the report that the everest program produced. I don't know if it makes any difference but before the Dell Hard Drive Died in Device Manager
the Modem stated Conexant HSF V92 56K Data Fax PCI Modem
Network Adapters stated SMC EZ Card 10/100 (SMC 1255TX)

Both of which are different now.

That folder with all the stuff that was backed up with driverbackup which I had come across at at http://www.pcworld.com/article/15112...y_drivers.html which is supposed to back up all your files (drivers) so that you can put them on the new hard drive does have 4,599 files in it. Some of which are applications and many being system files, help files, application extension, setup information, security catalog; and lots of other different items.

In the meantime I also ran the Maxtor Hard Drive test- (the info stating SMART HARD DISK STATUS - FAIL in the everest report had me concerned) and it passed the 3 tests there as well.

    Hi,
sorry to be picky but could you please post the log as I had requested...

Add the report in your next post like this.....

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

it is a lot easier for me to read when it is done like that. As soon as you post it like that I will piont you to the correct drivers/software for that machine.

I apologize for that. I thought I was forgetting a step when I did all of that (and it was the one about looking at the link for how you wanted the report posted).
I have attached the report as you had requested. Again, I am so sorry about that.

    Thanks so Very Much.

I do have one question in regards to the communications modem download. You have stated to download the Conexant/GVC - Driver V.92 Softdata driver. However, I see a V.92 Soft Data Fax Voice Modem (version v215.03.29.03, A03) ; V.92 Soft Data Fax Voice Modem (same version but with a release date of 14/03/2003); V.92 Soft (Data Fax) Modem (version v215.03.29.02, A02); and V.92 Soft (Data Fax) Modem (version 215.03.29.02, A03). Which of these should I download?

I do have the Windows XP SP3 on a disk (I had downloaded the .iso image and the .exe download of this update some time ago and still have copies of it – a friends internet connection was taking forever for her to download that update so I did so and sent them to her so that she could simply install them onto her XP machine)

I'll let you know how things go once I am done with all of the different installs and restarts.

One other question - is that info stating SMART HARD DISK STATUS - FAIL in the everest report anything to be concerned about? I did run the Seatools tests and the Maxtor Hard drive tests and they all stated that the drive passed the tests.

I have been doing as suggested but there seems to be a problem when installing the Network Adapter.

I did as instructed on the Dell site http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=40109 for the dell installation instructions.

I selected and downloaded the gvc - driver
    GVC Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter

    Release Date: 20/05/2002
    Version: 3.97(WHQL), A00

(there is also a gvc - html listed)

    The instructions state the following:
    Install
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R35845.EXE.
    The Self-Extractor window appears.
    2.Click OK or Continue.
The Self-Extracting Driver Installation window appears and prompts to
    extract files to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R35845.
3.Leave all of the default settings and click Unzip or OK. If the
directory doesn't exist, you'll be prompted to create one. Click Yes. A
Self Extractor window appears and indicates C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R35845 files were extracted.
    4.Click OK.
Follow the on-screen installation instructions in the window.

However, after the files have been extracted to c:\dell\drivers\r35845 the only thing that happens is that the folder is open with 3 files in there. a NETRTS5 (security catalog); NETRTS5 (setup information); and RTL8139 (system file). But there are no on-screen installation instructions?

I'm not sure which of the communications files to download either.
You stated to download the Conexant/GVC - Driver V.92 Softdata driver.

I will download that file from the link you have given me.

As for which browser I use. I do have IE but usually use either firefox or the google chrome browser. Should I go back and download that Network Adapter driver again using IE and try the install again (since I never got the on-screen installation instructions once the file was opened?)

I can use IE - I just don't use it much.

Okay, I have tried downloading the network driver again using IE and installing it but once it has been extracted no on-screen instructions appear. Just the folder with the 3 files in it.

I did go to the device manager and clicked on Network Adapters and the information there states "SMC EX Card 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Network Adapter" - which I do not even see listed at the Dell site.

Could this be the problem with installing the network driver?

    Ok,
Can you connect to the internet with that driver that is installed, if not then uninstall it from device manager/restart and try installing the GVC driver.

I have tried and no luck. In fact, I have been switching my monitor connection between the 2 desktop pc's (not an easy feat when the monitor is plugged in fairly low on the tower and one cannot bend very easily). Anyway, I did install the linksys drivers after installing the new hard drive and Windows XP but could not connect (which is pretty much when I came here to see if I could get some help).

on the machine that is up and running (windows xp pro on that one - and hp) if I click on the little network icon in the system tray and select open network connections and right click on the wireless network connection and select properties there are 3 tabs in that screen. General; Wireless Networks; Advanced. In the Wireless Networks tab the linksys is listed and if I click on it and select the properties is shows all the information for the type of connection.

But on this Dell there are only 2 tabs - General & Advanced and no matter what I do when I click on the linksys icon in the system tray it just keeps saying cannot associate with the access point and then it states you are connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found - yet I am connected to the same internet & access point on this laptop.

I hve tried the command prompt and entering ipconfig
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /all

    with no luck.

I'll try uninstalling the driver listed in device manager; restarting pc and then installing the driver you suggested and see what happens.

Will be back in just a few.

Thanks again for all your assistance and patience with me. You have no idea just how much I appreciate this.

Okay, I did as you suggested, uninstalled the network driver in the device manager and then restarted the pc. I then went to install the driver that I downloaded and still it states that it has be unpacked and then the screen with the 3 items in that folder pops up but no on-screen instructions for installation.

I opened up the device manager again and checked network and the driver that I uninstalled before is listed again.

I don't know if this makes any difference or would help but the same Network Adapter is listed in the HP machine that is running windows xp professional - but that one has an AMD processor. (and I wouldn't even know where to find the drivers are located to possibly copy it to a usb and then install it on the Dell and see if that would resolve the problem.

Another thing is that the little network icon in the system tray does keep searching for "acquiring network address" but it has been doing that since I installed the linksys so that I could connect to the internet.

I did do a search and came across drivers for the SMC at smc.com but when I am choosing the information for downloading the driver I don't know the part number so that I can select the correct driver for the SMC which is listed. But I did select one part number to see which driver comes up and then the other and it is the same driver download no matter which part number is selected. http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?cid=9&event=viewProduct&localeCode=EN_USA&pid=1539&scid=51

Should I try that driver instead of perhaps copy the driver from the other windows xp machine ??? Just in case it makes any difference the machine running xp professional had windows ME installed in it (originally) but I upgraded it to the xp professional.

just an update on the network driver.

    This is what I found:

I started to go through the folder with all the "drivers" that driverback copied to a folder and there is one in there named SMC55T51

    Hi Lisa,
Here is the SMC driver that is for your card......

    http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=...mber=1539&partNumber=3452&downloadType=1&os=7

it is the bottom one not the vista one ok.

are you trying to connect wirelessly?? or are you using the ethernet (rj45 cable) to hardwire to the router ?? I would uninstall the linksy's software/drivers until you have established a connection, you do not need the drivers/software from linksy's to connect to the router via ethernet. If you are trying to connect wirelessly then you will need a wireless adapter as this machine does not have that capabillity installed. If you have been expecting it to connect via your wireless network it will not!! thats why you are getting the not connected signal.

    Hello,

Okay, I will try this other driver.

AS for how I am connecting to the internet. I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless-G broadband router that is connect to the modem (both of which are located in the basement). I have a Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Network Adapter upstairs which I plug into the usb port of the pc.

It works just fine with the HP machine running the Windows XP Professional and it was working on the Dell as well until the hard drive died.

I cannot connect it directly via the ethernet cable since I am disabled and cannot get the tower downstairs to plug the ethernet cable directly into the pc itself.

It will be about an hour or so before I can do all of this since I have to go and pick up mom and take her to her dentist appointment right now - but will do all of this as soon as I get back.

    Hello Lisa,
I am sorry to hear that you are limited as to what you can do, is it possible for you to turn the router off (for at least a minute) then turn it back on??, is your wireless network protected with a Key (wep/wap/wap2) as you will need this also to connect the dell. The issue you are havig is not with the ethernet driver I believe that all is well with that, the issue is with getting the linksy's wireless card to aquire the network, hopefully just turning it off the back on sometimes resolvess this. If not you need to uinstall the all of the linksy's software/drivers, shutdown and reboot and install them again :cry.

    Hello Again,
Back from taking mom to the dentist. Okay I did download that driver but didn't do anything with it yet.

I turned off the router for 3 minutes (unplugged both the power supply and the connection to the modem). I then plugged in the power supply, then the ethernet cable - but that did not fix it either.

Yes the wireless network is protected with wap2 (although when I installed the software onto the dell the only options are wep and wap).

I did somehow manage to get a screen so that I could add the information for the protection and the additional tab in properties box of the network connections so that there was a wireless network connections tab as well but I still could not connect.

I uninstalled the software and reinstalled it but now that wireless network connections tab with the protection information is gone again and I can't figure out how I managed to add that extra information. (that's what I get for trying to do too many things at the same time!)

I can't believe I am having this much trouble. I didn't have this problem when I first connected the Dell to the internet (before the hard drive died on me).

Anyway, it is getting a bit late so I am going to take a brake for the rest of the evening.

First I will uninstall the linksys software again and then I am going to shut down the Dell for the evening. I will also go back downstairs and unplug the router and wait a little bit before plugging it back in again. Tomorrow I will try installing the linksys software again and then plugging in the wireless adapter and see if anything changes. Hopefully it will connect this time instead of just stating that it is acquiring the network address.

I will be back tomorrow and let you know if I have made any progress.

Again, thank you so very much for all of your patience and assistance.

    Lisa

I was thinking last night after shutting everything down for the evening. That since the real problem may actually be with the linksys acquiring the network address and not with the network card itself that perhaps I should continue installing the rest of the drivers first and then come back and work on that problem.

In the steps to follow for updating/installing the drivers I got as far as the network driver and the driver that I was trying to install not giving me the on-screen instructions to follow once it was opened.

There are still the following items to be installed:
    4b.Comunication- Modem.(Conexant/GVC - Driver V.92 Softdata)
    Re-Boot
    5. Sytem Utilities. (Dell time keeping)
    6. IDE/EIDE Controllers.(Intel Driver- App Accelerator)
    7. Windows Up-dates. I would strongly advise to upgrade to SP3 for all of the security patches and bug fixes.

I have been doing restore points so should I go back to the restore point before installing the Network- LAN Driver.(GVC - driver) and then continue installing the other 4 items or just leave that as it is and install the above 4 listed items?

    Hello Again,
I hadn't heard back from you so I thought that I would simply continue with the steps that you had given me to follow regarding installing the drivers onto the machine.

Originally you suggested that I install the following drivers in this order (getting the drivers from http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...abIndex=&scanSupported=True&scanConsent=False

    1. Chipset Driver.(Intel 800 series driver)
    Re-Boot
    2. VGA Driver.(ATI Rage 128 ultra)
    Re-Boot
    3a. UAA Driver.... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...tem=ob-47284-1
    Re-Boot
    3b. Audio Driver.(Creative Labs Soundblaster Live 512V)
    Re-Boot
    4a.Network- LAN Driver.(GVC - driver)
    4b.Comunication- Modem.(Conexant/GVC - Driver V.92 Softdata)
    Re-Boot
    5. Sytem Utilities. (Dell time keeping)
    6. IDE/EIDE Controllers.(Intel Driver- App Accelerator)
    7. Windows Up-dates. I would strongly advise to upgrade to SP3 for all of the security patches and bug fixes.

I had installed the drivers up to and including the Network driver (4a) however, when installing that driver there should have been an on-screen set of instructions to complete the installation of that driver but there were none. After a few more posts it was believed that the ethernet driver is just fine.

So this morning I went to install the communication - modem driver and let it install itself where it suggested which was c:\Dell\drivers\R36861.
After opening that driver I got a screen with instructions for completing the installation.

Installing the GVC-REALTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter Drivers for Windows XP
Right click on the My Computer Icon

From the System Properties Window select Hardware then Device Manager Tab
    Double-Click on Network adapters

    Double-Click on GVC-REALTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter
In the GVC-REALTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter configuration window, select the Driver tab

Click on the Update Driver Button

In the Hardware Update Wizard, select “install from a list or specific location (Advanced) then click “Next” button

From the next window, make sure that “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” is selected then press the “Next” button
From the next window, Click “Have Disk…”

Type in " C:\Dell\Drivers\GVC driver folder " in the textbox or Browse to where the driver files were unzipped then press OK
The Hardware Update Wizard, will show “Select Network Adapter”, Click “GVC-REALTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter” then press “Next” button

The Hardware Update Wizard, will show “Completing the Hardware Update Wizard” Click “Finish” button

If no driver was found, go back and make sure that the file locations are correct and try again.

Well, the driver was installed in c:\dell\drivers\R36831 not c:\dell\drivers\gvc as stated above. Also, there is no listing stating GVC-REALTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter in the device manager under network

Anyway, I clicked on the network adapter listed (which is SMC EZ Card 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Network Adapter) and followed the instructions above and I got a screen stating that the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. I tried again with the same results.

    Now what:
1 - I opened and installed the driver that was suggested for the Communication - Modem yet, the instructions state to open network in the device manager why?
    2 - what do I do now?

Also, as a reminder; you had stated for the modem driver to
Download the Conexant 2003 release version modem.

Download the GVC driver from here....

    http://download.cnet.com/Network-Eth..._4-108996.html

Now I am not sure if the above download was for the Network or the communications - modem. Either way it didn't work and if it was for the network I still do not know exactly which of the modem drivers to download.

On the Dell page there are a few Conexant/GVC drivers available:

Conexant/GVC V.92 Soft Data Fax Voice Modem for Windows
    Release Date: 01/05/2003
    Version: v215.03.29.03, A03

    Release Date: 14/03/2003
    Version: 215.03.29.03, A03

Conexant/GVC V.92 Soft (Data Fax) Modem for Windows
    Release Date: 14/03/2003
    Version: v215.03.29.02, A02

Conexant/GVC V.92 Soft (Data Fax) Modem for Windows
    Release Date: 06/05/2003
    Version: v215.03.29.02, A03

All of the above state v.92 which is the driver that you suggested I download -- but when I was just in device manager and looked under modem it states Softv90 Data Fax Modem???

Any assistance you could give me would be so very much appreciated.

Also I think I may have found some info on why I was having a problem connecting to the internet. I found an article at the microsoft site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821442/en-us but I thought that I would finish installing the proper drivers before worrying about that issue. (not sure if it actually has anything to do with the problem or not but I was also going to go and check the linksys site for information as well.

    Hello,

I imagine I could do a full format and reinstall the operating system again if need be. I installed it once on a new (blank) hard drive! I have a Windows XP Home SP2 disc and a Windows XP Professional SP1 disc as well.

I also have system restore points dating back to July 1st (prior to installing any drivers at all) if that is of any help.

In regards to the question that tgell asked. I opened up the device manager and none of the devices have a yellow exclamation point on them. To be honest I'm not sure that any of them did before starting to install the drivers. Does that mean that I don't need any drivers???

Just to let you know, I was under the impression that I needed to get all the drivers again because of a post I read at http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/f/3534/p/19288787/19533008.aspx

    Hello Again,

Under Modem in the Device Manager it states "SoftV90 Data Fax Modem" and for Network it states "SMC EZ Card 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Network Adapter".

When I right click on modem and select properties the information there states SoftV90 Data Fax Modem; Manufacturer CXT. Diagnostics tab states for value PCI/VEN_14F1&DEV_2013&SUBSYS_021213EO&REV_01
The details tab had Device Instance ID selected in the drop down box and the information there states
    PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_2013&SUBSYS_021213EO&REV_01\4&1351887D&0&50F0

When I do the same for Network the information states
SMC EZ Card 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Network Adapter
    Manufacturer SMC
Details tab (also has Device Instance ID selected) and the information there is:
    PCI\VEN_1113&DEV_1216&SUBSYS_125510B8&REV_11\4&1351887D&0&60F0.

So if I actually do not need to reinstall the drivers as is stated on the Dell site, then should I install the download of SP3 and then try to figure out why I can't get the Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Network Adapter which I plug into the usb port of the pc to access the router and connect to the internet? All it was doing was "acquiring network address" and if I opened up the linksys icon in the system tray it would alternate between cannot connect to the access point and connected to the access point but cannot find the internet - yet I am on the internet with the laptop.

Again, I can't thank you enough for all your assistance.

You are all set with the drivers. Now the only problem is your USB adapter. I am not familiar with that adapter. But, did you give it a WPA key so that it will connect with the router, assuming you have WPA on your router which you should have for security reasons. There are two versions of this adapter and one requires a driver. If you look at the bottom of the adapter, you will see if it is a version 1 or 4. 1 needs the driver. Also, if your router is a Linksys, you can set the adapter up using what is called SecureEasySetup. This is explained in the user guide.

    http://www.linksysbycisco.com/LATAM/en/support/WUSB54G/download

Edit: Yes, you should download and install SP3. It's best to do it from the full installer and not through Windows Update. Microsoft no longer supports SP2 for security updates.

Another thing you might want to try is to enable SSID Broadcast if it is disabled on the router.

    Edit:
For some reason it did not show up the first time but there is also a driver for Version 4 of this adapter. If you have already installed the setup software from the CD, you do not have to reinstall the drivers.

    Hello Again!

I had uninstalled the linksys software the other day using the add/remove section of the control panel.

I do have all the original discs and the wireless - G is version 4. I had installed it the same way that I did originally before the hard drive died but for whatever reason I was not able to connect to the internet (can connect on the other windows xp machine - no problems). I do have WPA on the router as well. I had thought about resetting the router but then I would have to go through the whole thing of setting up the WPA again and resetting all the machines up as well. I can't imagine why it isn't working this time since it worked with no problems before.

(if I didn't have it connected to the internet in the first place I would think that maybe it was the windows xp home that was the problem since the machine running windows xp professional is connecting just fine - but this machine was connected before the hard drive failed and I had to replace it.) It is probably something so simple that I am overlooking and will kick myself in the butt for when I realize it!

Perhaps I should just install the SP3 first and then work on trying to get that darn router to work again. (or should I get the internet connection working first?)

    Yes,
Install sp3. Then on the support page I linked to, you can download the drivers, but I think there is a way to just install the drivers and not install the Monitor software unless you wish to. And yes, do not reset the router, especially since one of your computers see it fine.

Okay, I will do that. I did download the sp3 from the link that you gave me (although I do have it on a CD - had downloaded the .iso in the past as well as having downloaded the same file from the microsoft site) so I will use that download.

I did find a link for the driver for the linksys router and was doing some reading and apparently there is a way to just install the driver without having to install the monitor software as well. I think that I may try doing that and see if it will work that way instead.

I am not sure that I will be able to get to both things this evening since I have to go and check on my parents in a little while so if I at least install the sp3 update and then do the linksys tomorrow. Will be back to let you know how things go (most likely tomorrow early afternoon).

Again, Thank You Soooo Very Much for all of your help and patience with me as well. You have no idea just how much I do appreciate it.

    Hello Again,

I did install the xp sp3 without any trouble. However, I have not had a chance to try and connect to the internet just yet. I had transferred all of the information on what I have been doing and the information for the linksys and troubleshooting steps for getting connected onto a flash drive and when I inserted that flash drive this afternoon it is stating that the file or directory is corrupt and unreadable so I have been searching to see if there is a way to fix that.

I knew I should have just left everything on the desktop of this pc until all was fixed on the dell.

Just wanted to give you an update. I started thinking about the windows components that were actually installed initially so I turned on the HP machine running windows xp professional and looked at what was listed there and then compared it to what was installed on this Dell running windows xp home.

I am not sure if it makes any difference in getting my internet connection or not but under Networking only the internet gateway was checked off on the Dell machine and on the HP machine Rip Listener and UPnP User Interface are also checked off so I added a check mark to those on this (dell) machine.

I don't have the time to try installing the Linksys driver and trying to connect right now since I have to go and pick up my mother and take her to physical therapy is a little while but as soon as I get back and I will let you know if all the problems are gone.

I did notice that in the add/remove programs there is nothing listed for .Net Framework MSXML 6 Service Pack or MS Visual C++ (all of which are listed on the other machine running XP Professional). I am guessing that once I am finally connected to the internet I will get a little pop up telling me that there are updates to be installed and those items will be among them.

Again, Thanks so Very Much and I will let you know how things are going after I get back later this morning.

    Hello Again!

I am now connected to the internet! I inserted the wusb54g wireless setup cd into the drive and when the welcome screen popped up I clicked on cancel. I then plugged in the wireless - g usb network adapter to the computer and when the wizard popped up I selected to install the software automatically, once installation was complete simply clicked on finish. I then clicked on the network icon that was now in the system tray and that brought up the wireless network connection 5 box, I clicked on connect which brought up the box asking for the network key. I entered my WPA2 network key and I now have the internet connected to the Dell machine.

Right now I am installing my anti-virus program (which is right now in the process of scanning the computer) and once that is done I will install my firewall software.

After that I will go to the windows update and see what updates are listed to be installed.

Is there anything else that I should be doing and may have forgotten?

I'm guessing that the .net framework, ms visual c++ and msxml 6 service pack 2 will be listed in the things to install at ms updates.

Again, thanks so VERY much for all of your assistance ~ it is Greatly Appreciated.

I did have one other question. When I ran the Everest program http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html on the dell the report stated Smart Hard Disk Status - Fail. I did download the report which can be found at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=240165&page=2 (post #11).

Is this something to be concerned about? I did run the Seatools and Maxtor Hard Drive Tests on that hard drive and according to those 2 tests it passed everything. Just want to make sure that there isn't something to worry about after all of this.

    Thanks Again

Great!!! ;) pleased to hear that you are now connected to the net!!!
Don't worry about the everest report, especially if seatools and maxdata gave good results.
Any more issues post back and we will see if we can sort them out for you.

Glad you got your internet back. Nice Work! :)
You can also use something like HDDScan to check the status every so often. If it fails with HDDScan, then I would be looking to buy a new drive.

Nice Work - Thanks to YOU!!!!

I will check out that hddscan - especially since the hard drive that I did install into the Dell is an older used one.

I didn't want to spend alot of money on a new hard drive only to find out that I wasn't going to be able to get this unit up and running. I am going to look into getting a new IDE hard drive for the Dell (if I can find a new one). When doing my research I did see that if I want to install a hard drive larger than something like 130GB that I will have to update the bios but I don't see that being a big deal. (at least I hope not -- LOL)

I have the anti virus up and running as well as the firewall and I have just completed all of the MS updates as well. So now to go and see about installing some anti-spyware next.

Again, I can't thank you enough for everything you have done for me.

    hello again!

I hate to be a bother but I have a questions about that software hdd scan.

I downloaded it and unzipped it but all I got was a folder which actually looks like it should maybe be located in the program files section??? Also, I could find any real directions on how to use it and read the information.

Any suggestions on that would be so very much appreciated.

    Thanks Again

    Lisa

    Hi,
There is no need to install the program. It is all self-contained like a portable app. It does have to be run in an admin account. Just pick your drive from the drop down box if you have more than one and click the SMART button underneath. You will get a report with green, yellow, or red. Yellow is something to watch and red is definitely bad. You also have the option to do surface tests but I would avoid that. You are interested in the SMART results. The pdf file in the folder goes into more depth.

I am going a little off topic, but I was wondering if you have a backup system in place. Specifically, an imaging program that will restore your system to a new hard drive if there is a failure or a reinstall of the system if there is a malware infection. There are good free programs out there such as Macrium or Todo Backup. In my experience Todo has the better linux restore CD that can be booted if your system is so corrupted, you are unable to boot from the hard drive. In my opinion, everybody should have one of these imaging programs.
