    Hello,
I've been trying to fix my computer for the past few days and I went thru all the proceedures on your start here page and followed it all the way thru the Ewido to get rid of winlogonhook and my homepage still comes up saying there is spyware instead of my google site which my homepage says it should be. Also popups keep trying to happen when I'm online. Can anyone look at what I have and help me figure this out so I don't have to start over with a fresh harddrive.
    Thank you,
    Derek

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You skipped step 3 of the READ ME. You have AVG7 and Symantec installed. Uninstall one. Do that NOW! Then continue.

Run the below and attach the smitfiles.txt log.

    SpywareQuake Removal Procedure

Are any of the below paid versions?
    Ewido
    Counter Spy
    Spy Sweeper

Ok I uninstalled Norton and did exactly as you said and I am attaching the smitfile. I didn't find Spyquake anywhere or any of those files it said to delete. The only paid version I have is Spy Sweeper. The other 2 are trial versions. So what next??

Okay! First uninstall CounterSpy. Then before we uninstall Ewido refer to the below link (obviously skip the install steps since you have it but check for updates) and run Ewido and attach the log:

    Running Ewido Anti-Malware

    Now uninstall Ewido before continuing.

Let's get an installed programs list from HijackThis too!
    • Run HijackThis, click Open the Misc Tools section
    • Click Open Uninstall Manager
    • Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, to save it to a file where you can find it.
    • Attach the uninstall_list.txt file to your next message.

Ok I did what you said and uninstalled both CounterSpy and Ewido. Here are the attachments you asked for.

Goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall the below (only uninstall these and no others):
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
    WexTech AnswerWorks

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\Program Files\??mantec\mmc.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: Nothing - {edbf1bc8-39ab-48eb-a0a9-c75078eb7c8e} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpFCF5.tmp
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Eatw] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\DOBE~1\rundll32.exe" -vt mt
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tfrkg] C:\Program Files\??mantec\mmc.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - blank (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - blank (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: Yahoo! Services - {5BAB4B5B-68BC-4B02-94D6-2FC0DE4A7897} - blank (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete (if found):
    C:\Program Files\Mywebsearch(3) <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch(4) <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\??mantec <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\DOBE~1\rundll32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\1024 <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpFCF5.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\oins.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winubg32.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hi,
I appreciate all the help. I didn't have everything you said like the 1024 folder and ??mantec folder, etc...all i had were the websearch(3) & (4) so I deleted those. Spy Sweeper kept getting a pop up message saying it was blocking update2.outerinfo.com. Do you know what that is?? I guess I won't really know if we got everything until I start browzing the internet but I'm scared to because I don't want to make this worse. This has been a long and tedious process, but I'm learning alot from you guys and I appreciate it once again. So how do I know if I'm malware free for good so I can disable system restore etc..??
    Talk to you soon!!
    Thanks again,
    Derek

Okay you are all clean! Now since you have a paid version of Spy Sweeper, you do not need or want to have MS Windows Defender installed. That would cause more system resources to be wasted and could cause conflicts. So uninstall MS Windows Defender but make sure you keep your subscription to Spy Sweeper and you keep it updated.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

Then you are ready to start normal surfing again! :D
