    Hello,

This is a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop that is running Vista Home edition 32 bit. It was infected with Spyware however I have run all the READ RUN ME FIRST under the malware removal and have attached the logs to this post.

My problem now is that the antivirus has stopped updating so I uninstalled it. Now I can not reinstall any virus software. Also I can not do any windows updates and I get the error message that says "Windows could not search for new updates. Error(s) found: Code 80072efd Windows update encountered an unknown error."

Please let me know what steps I need to take to allow the machine to run windows updates as well as reinstall antivirus software.

I could only load four files so I will follow with the last log after this post.

Does the thread get moved automatically? I never started a malware thread i just did the read run me first. I will go add a new thread in that forum.

    Thanks

Re: Windows Updates will not run in Vista

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I appears as though the scans took care of the malware. Your logs are clean. Any other issues should be addressed in the software forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)

Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u

Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:

Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I assume that you now have anti-malware apps running to keep you clean.
When you click on the Windows update, do you receive the same error?

    Things to try:
    1. Open Internet Explorer > Tools >Internet Options > Security > Click 'trusted sites' icon >Click Sites > uncheck 'require server verification'.
    Then add following sites :

    http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    http://*.windowsupdate.com
    http://update.microsoft.com
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx
Click Close > Apply > OK.

    2. Go here and download the newest update agent
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387285(VS.85).aspx

    3. In a run box type cmd
then type in each line pressing enter after each is typed. This re-registers the necessary dlls for the update procedure.
    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuwebv.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltux.dll
    regsvr32 /s wudriver.dll
When finished, close the command window and reboot your computer.

    4. Open IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Security Settings > Ensure that the two boxes "Enable SSL 2" or "Enable SSL 3" are checked.

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes I have the anti-malware apps running to keep me safe.:)

I have also added those sites to the trusted sites. I already had most of them in there just not with the stars in the beginning.

I have also downloaded the most current update agent and it did not install anything so I am assuming that I had the latest and greatest.

I downloaded the Wuredist.cab but was not sure where to extract it to. Can you tell me what I did wrong? Or what I am doing wrong?

I have also completed the run commands and set SSL 2 and 3 in the internet options and still am unable to run the updates.

Yes I am receiving the same error:

Windows could not search for new updates....Errors found: Code 80072EFD Windows Updates encountered an unknown error.

Please let me know if you need anything else from me.

    Thank You

Well searching for wuredist.cab led me here
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms974336.aspx
which says, CABView, a power toy lets you view and drag files in and out of CABs. There are two problems a) Vista doesn't have Power Toys and b) where in the world are you supposed to drag these files. <sigh> Forget that wuredist.cab for awhile because I don't know what you need to do with it.

I'll see if I can find any other solutions for the error you are getting. I didn't search on the error yesterday, just in case it was a different error showing up.

    Can you go here? http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Vista
if so, can you download one update from there and install it?
You might need to do it manually until we can get this fixed.

A second option is to go here: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html
pick Vista and see what patches you need.

A third option is to go here: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
download PSI and run it. This scans your system and tells you what needs patching. (Stick to Easy Mode). After the scan, you can click, I believe, and get the patches installed. I use this program for my non-windows components to be sure my java, flash, and adobe are patched.

it might be worth your time to get email support from Microsoft for your update error. They might know a few more things to try.

    Thanks again :)

I followed your 2nd link and I was able to download and install but that still did not work.

I then proceeded to your 3rd link and I was able to download and install the Vista Service Pack 2 YESSSS!!!!:-D

So then I read your other thread because I was still unable to download updates and I followed the directions to disable the WinHTTP proxy and now I can update!!!

I am currently downloading and installing 33 windows updates as well as current windows defender definitions.

I will let you know if i am able to reinstall virus software.

    Thank you so much.

Yes, finally. :clap :hyper :dancer :celebrate
I know how frustrating it can be when update is broken and you've no idea how to fix it.
