Something named System Fix takes over my computer unless I start in safe mode. It runs a scan and tells me I need to buy a product to fix it. In safe mode I cannot look in add/delete programs to find the ones on your list, so cannot do this step or any to try and fix my computer. This all started with the redirect virus. Thank you for your help. bkr

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

Then you must continue on straight away with these instructions. Attach all of the requested logs once done
    . Thanks.

When I went to download the Kapersky, there was no way to save it to desktop (I am in safe mode) so I just ran it. It did show a problem, but "cure" was not available, so I skipped as told. There is a report, but there does not seem to be a way to turn it into an attachment. This is the problem it found:
    1681bc7a Rootkit.Win32.PMax.gen

What should I do next? Thank you.

Copy the report to notepad and attach that. You also need to be running MGtools. Save that to your root folder (* typically your C: drive ) and after running the exe, attach the log which is here -- C:\MGLogs.zip.

If you could not do "cure", then choose quarantine.

Hello, I went back and chose "quarantine". I was able to copy the report to Notepad, however, with a black screen, even in safe mode, as soon as I tried to access it to attach it, the System Fix took over again and I had to shut down. I tried to start the Computer in the normal mode, and I got the black screen and the whole mess started all over again. I am back in safe mode, and the only thing I can do is connect to the internet. There is no access to My Computer, the Control Panel or anything else, and there is no desktop to which to save anything as instructed. Am I doomed? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Try downloading SAS Portable to a thumb drive and run it from there. Attach the results.

Hello. I ran this program, but not from a thumb drive, as I could not figure out a way to copy it. It found many items, but then said I had to reboot, and there is no record now. Regardless how I restart the computer, nothing comes up on the start menu except Internet Explorer, Chrome and Command Prompt. The screen is back to blue, but there is nothing there. It is like I am still in Safe Mode, but I selected to start Windows normally. I must be missing something. Please help if you can. Thank you so much. bkr

If you can't start in any mode, you need to post in the software forum to try to get your system back up and booting. Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

I noticed that for Start-up, it says "empty". I will try "last know good configuration" again. When I tried it previously, it went right to the "system fix" takeover. If that does not work, can I restore anything from Carbonite? Is it possible the hard drive is beyond saving? Thank you.

Carbonite is only for backing up your files, not your OS> Do you have your installation disc?

I moved so many times I lost track of things. I would have the disk but God knows where. I logged in as Administrator instead of Admin, and could look in My Computer, etc. and I saw all the programs and files there, but under this login, if I put the curser at Programs it says none. I think I'm up the proverbial creek, right? Thanks, bkr

You can operate in Admin. mode? IF so, please do the rest of the Read and Run First instructions while in the Admin. profile and get me some logs to look at.

Running in Administrator, which only comes up on Safe Mode, I started the process, and I see a folder for the TDSSkiller from when I ran it on the 20th. I have tried to attach it, but I am not sure it worked. Please let me know. I will work on more things tomorrow. Thank you very much.

Second attempt. I think I got it this time. It seems as if all my programs are there, including Office 2007 which I just installed a couple months ago, however, when I tried to open an Admin document signed in as Administrator, it shut Office down as it couldn't verify the license. If you can help me get my programs back I will be eternally grateful. bkr

Please finish running the Read and Run First instructions and attach the requested logs. TDSSKiller did find a root kit and removed it. But I need to see the rest of the logs to know what is happening in your system.

I am stuck on RootRepeal. I could only find the .rar version and my computer won't open it. I had WinZIp but it's gone. I tried to download it twice and got a fatal error. I am attaching the combofix log and assume it is OK to continue even though I could not do RootRepeal. Combofix was helpful but I still have no access to my most important program which was located on my desktop, Brokerforce. Thank you for your help.

I still need the rest of the logs.

I think this is the only log missing. What should I do about RootRepeal that I could not open? Should I get software to open .rar files? My computer is miraculously working again pretty well. I just read about Toggling System Restore. Am I ready for that? Thank you, bkr

I am not finding any malware in your logs. Tell me what issues you are still having, if any.

I am missing access to software. For example, I had recently bought Office 2010(?) and it opens when I download something, but it does not show up in my programs, so I can't just open it and use it. I have things like Startup - Empty - Explorer (no add-ins) and I can't change it. Fortunately, I can use other programs. Thank you so much for your help and this website. I really thought I had lost everything. I will surely donate something as soon as I get a paycheck. Thanks! bkr PS: If I could get all my money back from Geek Squad I would give it to you. Do you get other complaints about them?

Please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find the items that seemed to be missing?

You can restore the defaults for the Start Menu, Accessories and Administrative Tools as follows:

    • Restore Accessories Program Files Menu with accrestore.zip for XP
      • Extract (unzip) the tool, double-click on it to run and ensure that the following check boxes are checked (as shown below):

      • Then click on the Restore button.

Otherwise, you may just need to re-install those programs that are missing the shortcut icons.

Any lingering issues should probably be addressed in the software forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
      1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
      2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
        • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
        • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
          • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
          • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
      4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
      5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
      6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
      7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
      8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
      9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
        • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
        • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

      10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
