    Major Geeks:

I know that people have posted threads like this in the past, but I have (as far as I can tell), a unique situation. Whatever it was that I caught, was on another computer (my business computer). I've spent all weekend at home trying to find fixes, because the virus is blocking my internet usage, therefore, I can't download anything from the infected computer. Anytime I try to open something, the "open with" window comes up, even with the internet (both google chrome & IE8). I can, however, still run my McAffee virus scan, but it is not detecting anything.

I've put the following things on a flash drive, to bring in to work tomorrow morning:
    - Malwarebytes
    - Super Antispyware
    - Spybot (already installed on that computer, but can't open it)
    - Microsoft windows malicious software removal tool
    - WinXP_EXE_Fix

I guess my question is, can I run these programs from my flash drive? Should I try renaming them & then running them?

I appreciate your attention on this. As I said, I am being blocked from internet access on the infected computer, so cannot download anything while I'm on it.

Please reply. Even if it's to say that you can't or won't help me. Please say something.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You can transfer the programs via thumb drive, however, you run the risk of infecting the thumb drive. So I would suggest you transfer via CD or DVD.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Note:
You can try telling it to open with the same program that you are trying to run. For example, if you were trying to run FireFox, and you received the Open With window, just tell it to open with firefox.exe

The required fix is to fix EXE file associations (which you mentioned at the end of your first message).

OK. I've run through the following fixes:

    - Clearing temp folders
    - Using CCCleaner
    - Running Spybot several times
    - Running Mbam serveral times
    - Running SuperAntiSpyware several times
    - Running Kaspersky
    - Running MGTools

None of the popups are coming up anymore, & I can now use the internet (IE8). The following are problems that I am having now:

    - McAffee tries to run, but then I get a popup saying that it has encountered a problem & has to shut down.
    - Google Chrome will not work, even after uninstall & reinstall.
    - System Restore will not work. It tells me to restart my comp. & try again.
    - Spybot came up with these two problems:
    Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled
    Win32.TDSS.rtk

The following is my hjt log:

NOTE TimW : We did not ask for a HJT log. One will be generated when you run MGTools!!

Please attach the requested logs. We only asked you to run the scans once so that we can see where the infections are.

    Please attach:
    SAS
    MBAM
    ComboFix
    RootRepeal
    C:\MGLogs.zip
