LOL, and the frenzy begins.:D I even grabbed the Longhorn server x86 as it was stated that it's way faster than Vista. At 900MB less in weight, I would imagine so. It will be fun to see how fast my rig snaps though I'll never buy it as I don't need it.

EDIT: BTW, I got this from Connect so don't expect it being available yet. ;)

Downloading now. Ummm, FF crashed nearly half way to downloading the first time.

    NOTE:

Download via an alternative browser. Seems that even with IE7+ one can not download just the ISO. Well, I tried it, and it automatically wanted to use the MS downloader active x control.

So, 47% of the way with try number 2 with FF. 512 KB/s speed right now. :)

Edit, was wondering where the original Vista thread vanished to. :)

How much space should I allocate in a new partition for Vista? I still wanna be able to boot with both XP and Vista.

Download manager didn't work for me at all, better off using browser download.

Original thread was un-stickied with a few others dont know who did it or why, but fresh threads are good :)

@Blades I would be going for 30GB at a min, especially if you want to install other programs on it.

@McA, yes that DL manager is bad, had issues with that when they used it for Office 2007 downloads, until they removed it.

    Download has just completed :D

Gonna go out and buy some DVD media now, what type do you suggest?

Any good branded ones will do, but remember burn the ISO at a slow speed and no greater than 2.4x speeds or you may have install errors.

TBH, I use Philips DVDRWs, saves wasting DVDs.

  10. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

OK, and just put the image straight to disc as a normal burn, or do I need to go through making it bootable etc?

  11. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

    Which burning software you using?

You need to convert the ISO to burn on DVD, Nero or most other buring apps will do this for you, if you have Nero, start Nero Express and click Burn image to disk > browse for the vista ISO and follow the rest of the wizard, OR Start Nero with the normal layout "Nero Burning ROM" and choose File > Burn Image............ but remember to choose a low speed 2.4x is fine.

  12. mcadam

    mcadam Major Amnesia

OK, just starting burning at 2.4x :D

Can't find x64 drivers for my sound yet, and haven't learnt how to make it so the windows go into that weird position, if you get me!

  14. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

You are in same boat as many in relation to sound drivers, me included.

Weird position? if you mean Flip3D, then your GFX card needs to be capable but its the 3rd Icon from the start menu on the taskbar looks like two windows on a 30/45deg angle and use ALT+Tab as well.

While its the Beta2 Product Guide most of its still relevent to RC1 so well worth a read Windows Vista Beta 2 Product Guide

No problems using MS's dl manager nor burning at 8x using Nero. I always have Nero check burns as I use a no-name brand of DVD. Actually, even if it was a Phillips etc., I'd still have Nero check it. Saves on head bashing at install time. At $20 CDN for a spindle of 50, I could care less if one gets a bad burn.

The MS downloader we would be using for Connect ( FTM ) is not the same as the Akamai one, while you may not have problems burning at 8x, you'll agree that many have, which is why MS recomend a slow burn. I personally dont need to check them as I use DVDRWs so erase and burn again if it fails.

  17. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Agreed, I've seen many posts around about the burning problems. I'm happy I'm not one of them. As to checking the burn, I have to disagree with you. If an install goes part way only and fails, many folk won't know why it failed after some head bashing on the wall.

I really should get some DVD-RWs as I've just thrown out all my CD/DVD from 4015 on out, all my old distros etc. I guess a 5 or 10 pack would be good to have. Thanks for that reminder.:)

Edit: One thing weird that I did notice about the FTM downloader was it would not let me choose another drive except C:. Had me going for a while.

No probs on DVDRW reminder, I fell foul of the wasting a few at high speed burn with DVDRs so went to DVDRWs, they work just as good and have the bonus of being re-usable.

Have you now managed to change the DL location in FTM as it lets me choose, once run Options > General tab and Browse.

What you think of RC1 at present?

For me x64 is still just only an issue due to drivers and some core apps of mine not working, but its stable enough to use each day, so lacking in Audio drivers is forcing me once again to install x86 version this weekend, once I just done a quick second scan for any bugs apart from drivers and a few minors.

To address the subject at hand, Ive got Sony DVD-Rs and havent had a problem yet. I burned mine at 1.5x to be safe, only took about 10 mins or so

onto my question.....i know u can download this from other sites (there was a link on HG mohepage i think yesterday) so where can u get a CD key? Last time i tried to install Vista it asked for one which i didnt have. Can i just use my XP key?

  20. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Nope, gotta have a vista key. Right now, only CPP users can use their old key.

Though, this key is good for 10 computers, if memory serves me well. The key is needed to install, then you have 14 days to activate.

Also, in the coming week, or so, MS, will open allow non-cpp, technet, msdn users to get new keys. Which I'm looking forward to, so I can get the 64 bit version key. Not looking forward to getting 64bit sound drivers. :)

So, far, upgrading from xp to vista beta 2, then pre-RC1, then to RC1 has worked great.

Also, I burned at full speed using Maxwell DVD+R media. With no issues.

The only way to install Vista is by burning it to a DVD-R or RW cd? Isnt there another way to install? I mean, I can buy the cds but I'm just wondering.

  22. theefool

    TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK:

I upgraded from XP to Vista via Daemon Tools, before I bought the DVD burner I now own.

    http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php

And it worked. Basically download the ISO, and mount the iso...Then install....

Note #125: I had issues with the sound, creative drivers suck with vista. So, I bought a dvd burner, burned to it, removed the sound card, and fresh install.

BTW, data recovery tools were useless in recovery my files, after the vista install. I'm back to normal now. Backups? Who needs backups. :)

How does one set it so that the pc doesn't auto-boot to Vista but to XP? It's not in the text file in xp!

Maybe the timer got set to 0 in XP or you lost your boot.ini. Vista uses a new bootloader and they don't always play well together. A nice tool to see what's up is VistaBootPro and make sure you get version 2.1 It shows all your bootloaders and let's you change settings. Just be sure of what you're changigng or you can lose Vista also.

    Thanks mate, all sorted :)

Flip3D doesn't appear to be present on my version of Vista at all.

Downloaded it burned it, and used it, seems to be faster and a little more stable then other versions of Vista. Love the 3DFlip.

Interesting, so, Windows + tab key doesn't bring it up, if you have multiple apps running?

It doesn't work, if only the desktop is showing. Also, there is a button near the "start" button for this. Called: Windows Switcher.

RC1 works great, even upgrading from PreRC1.

Still learing quite a bit on the inter-workings of the OS.

On a side note, Perfect disk has a beta (150 day trial) for their vista version. Running it now.

Also, it didn't detect a page file on my system. I have windows monitoring the page file.

I, also, believe that diskeeper has a vista version also.

I do hate Vista "new" defrag program. I like watching the visual apect of my computer being defragged. :)

    Windows Vista RC1
RC1 CPP Now Available to General Public
A quick update on CPP status:

Windows Vista RC1 is now publicly available. This means that 32- and 64-bit downloads for all three languages (English, German, and Japanese) are live. If you did not receive and email in the previous wave, you can now both download the ISO image and request a product key (PID).

Vista 5728-16387 is up on Connect for those who have access. Big jump on the build number. I'm curious now but I can't dl 'til my BW resets in three days. :(

  38. theefool

As far as I know, the big jump is merely the RTM tree. Mostly bug fixes, stability, and speed increases. I am part of connect, but I do not have access to everything. :(

So MS made this public too! Good to know. I guess they need more feedback and/or publicity. Here's the direct public link to the x64 version (which isn't shown in your link yet) for those who have the hardware.

So I'm just curious...They say this might not be able to be transfered into the official release.

Is that just them covering their butts so someone doesn't get themselves so deeply rooted into an install and then gripes about having to start fresh...or just simply that you should always anticipate an incompatibility problem!?!?

I believe you're talking about an upgrade and this build, 5728, isn't meant to be upgraded from though you can upgrade from RC1 to 5728 but people are reporting problems. I always do a clean install but that's my preference. Driver support is good and it's reportedly very stable. I see you're taking the plunge so good luck.

  44. theefool

Looks like I'll take the plunge also. I have nothing on this computer, that I'll miss. :)

That's the best way to do it! Many folk have had problems dual booting Vista with XP though I haven't had a problem since 4051 and not even then. IMO it's better than RC1 by far! As always, my HP scanner and printer are not supported.:( I hope the peripheral people get their act together for driver support real soon.

AGREE with you on that, at least this time in x86 my media card reader works again.... did also do an upgrade frm 5600 to 5728 this time, worked fine for me, altho as you say some have had issues.

Is much better than RC1 build 5600 tho. Will try out x64 at weekend but as I know my sound driver will not be supported :(

  47. theefool

Forgot to post yesterday, but I'll post now.

Working great for me! No issues as of yet.

BTW, I am not dual booting between xp and vista, just a straight vista load as my primary pc.

Side notes: My quick launch icons got reset to the default. Also, lost all my bookmarks and history for minefield (2006092604), but this was more related to places being disabled/reworked. Not a vista issue. :)

Well...1 week later, and things look great on my laptop, other that an occasional hiccup when I pull it out of hibernate. It doesn't want to connect to my router.

My desktop on the other hand...Kind of giving me a headache!! It is a little older hardware than the laptop, but everything is up to spec. However...it freezes EVERY time the welcome screen comes up, right when it comes up!! I'm pretty sure it is a driver issue (I'm thinking the video card...even though I have updated to the Vista driver from Nvidias website) Since it run slick as a whistle in Safe Mode...but everytime I start in regular mode...it freezes right when the welcome screen loads, and it happens so fast I cant get the option to load on system startup, unchecked so it doesn't load next time!!
