I started having problems with my computer after I went to a site that tried to run a program disguised as a pdf. I tried to stop it by killing the process, but it took a long time for my task manager to run, and my computer was infected.

I scanned my computer with Avira and Malware Bytes, and I thought that everything was OK, since nothing really showed when running these tools. Then I started experiencing little problems, like double accents showing up when typing in Spanish (ยดยด). I was fool enough to keep working like this, then I went to my banking websites, and when I tried to log in, a pop up window appeared on both websites (Bank of America and Wachovia) asking me to re-enter some important information, including my CC# and SSN. After entering this information, I able to finally login.

After reading more about these issues, I now know that I've been the victim of a nasty Trojan, virus or whatever this thing is, and I've provided all my important information. I should go to my bank and report my stupid mistakes, correct? What else should I do to protect myself?

I desperately need to clean my computer, sine the nasty popups still appear on the banking websites, can you help me please!!!

    Thanks so much.

Yes! And change all your passwords and log in information too.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thanks for your reply. I spent most of the day at my banks closing the accounts... What a nightmare!!

I've completed the Malware Removal steps and I am attaching the logs.

MG Tools did not create a Zip file, even though I ran the fix, and tried several times.

Where's the log from malware Bytes?

Combofix is running in the wrong location as shown below. You must move it directly onto your desktop before we continue.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    c:\windows\4FC9DA9DF608454E8191D7EFFDCC5726.TMP
    c:\program files\Enigma Software Group
    c:\documents and settings\Emmy\Application Data\Qowuwy
    c:\documents and settings\Emmy\Application Data\Ehtief

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please do this, click Start, Run and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. In the command prompt window, enter the below commands each followed by the enter key. Note there is a space after the cd

    cd \MGtools
    GetLogs.bat

If that really doesn't produce logs and a search for mglogs.zip turns up nothing then try the below:

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

Attach the log from combofix and also the log(s) from running MGTools. I cannot give you a complete fix without this.

Ooops... I sent you the Avira log instead of MalwareBytes. It is now attached.
I will go ahead and run ComboFix and try to run MGTools as suggested.

OK I'll be here waiting but may have to respond in the morning as it's getting late here now.

I started running ComboFix but since it was taking a while, my screen saver started, and when I tried to stop the screen saver, ComboFix froze... I have to start all over again...

Not seeing an awful lot more to do here:

Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17

If you did not deliberately set this proxy yourself then please include it in the HJT fix below:
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\_delis32.ini

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Tell me how things are running please.

Everything seems normal, I am not getting the popup window asking for additional information when I go to my bank's websites, and the problem with the double accents in Spanish is gone. The only thing I notice is that Firefox takes a long time to accept a new url the first time it loads.

Thank you so much for all your help. You are awesome.
Let me know if I need to do something else...

Is there someone in the majorgeeks.com community that can provide some advice regarding what to do to report my SSN and personal information being now in the hands of the thieves/hackers?

One thing that I noticed is that the Malware Bytes icon on my task bar appears now in black color instead of red... does this mean anything?

Shall I keep all the tools that I downloaded to clean my PC?

You need to use a different computer and change all your online passwords. Then you need to contact your bank and all credit card accounts and just alert them to the fact that your personal info may have been compromised. :major

Thanks Tim. Do you think my computer is still infected? Shall I re-send the logs or use a different procedure to clean my computer?

I have cancelled all my bank accounts and debit cards. I have also requested a fraud alert on my SSN with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Although your logs appear to be clean, you may want to take the extra precaution of backing up your persoanl data and files only and then doing a complete reformat and clean install. That is the only way to be 100% sure you are not having any issues with your security.

Looking over your past posts would indicate there is not an issue, but the damage was probably done when you put out your personal info on what was probably a phishing site.

The precautions you have now taken should help to ensure that nothing further will happen regarding your banking and credit cards.
