Default windows is in the middle of a long operation

Twice i've gotten an error message when i try to reboot or shut down my pc saying windows is in the middle of a long operation. My pc is custom built pc with a asus p5n-e sli motherboard, intel duo core 2 cpu 2.33 mhz and two gigs of ram and windows xp, is this error common with windows xp and duo core cpus?
I ask is i can just down my pc and get rid of the error by turning off my pc by pushing it's power button. and then it's fine again.

In my years of using Windows, I have never seen or even heard of an error saying that "Windows is in the middle of a long operation". This can't possibly be the exact message.... Is it? If you could make a note of exactly what the error says, word-for-word, we can try to help. It's just that, personally, I've never heard of such an error and I find it VERY strange.

I looked up a screenshot i posted 2 days ago whan i thought it was caused by the lastest version of dvd fab hd.
It says windows is in the middle of a long operation.
Ether wait for the operation to finish or cancel it before you quit windows.
and to let you know i went to an earlier version of dvdfab hd and that didn't help.

Angry Re: windows is in the middle of a long operation

I started to get the same error again when i try to shutdown windows (it's most likely a driver issue)

Hi to all,
I'm a new member and I have exactly the same problem, i.e. I get the same message (Windows is in the middle of a long operation...) when I try to shut down the PC. I have no idea why this happens. The PC has a Asus MB (P53E deluxe WiFi) and a Quad 9300 processor. Also an Asus 9600 GT graphics card. Any ideas would be highly appreciated!

I have the same issue/concern

Often when I attempt to shut down or restart two of the computers with XP SP3 , I get the message "Windows is currently in the middle of a long operation. Either wait for it to finish or cancel it before you quit Windows".

I see nothing running in the task manager .

My current work-around to shutdown or restart my computer is to switch to a different User Name and select restart or shutdown from that User Name

I'm assuming you are all seeing this message box:

Are you finding this happening after running CCleaner by any chance?
This is the only time it happens to me and I too am trying to find a solution.

That was only part of the answer, I have since found a cure.

It was due to an indexing service that Nero 7 had installed.
Since removing the Nero 7 entry from startups using MSconfig, I can now run CCleaner and the computer will shut down immediately afterwards without the error message appearing.

So if you experience this problem and have NMBgMonitor running at startup then you could be in luck here.
