Default backing up w/rsynch - password problems

When trying to setup rsync to backup from the Mac to a XP Pro server, I am unable to get past the password prompt. In fact, I cannot type anything at the password prompt, and the only key that seems to work is the 'enter' key while I'm in the terminal window. Anybody know a workaround? Thank you in advance!

I have had loads of trouble trying to use rsync to backup even from one volume to another on the Mac. I stopped trying and use 3rd party apps now. Super Duper is good, manual backup for free, you can automate it if you pay the fee (which is super cheap). There is also Chronosync, which is $30 I believe, another great backup app.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Looks like SuperDuper is only good for bootable complete images, which will not work for the 4 mac laptops I need to backup to the server. Insufficient disk space as well as time constraints. Chronosync may be a solution, but time / bandwidth constraints will probably be a problem. How slow will the Mac be while it is executing it's backup? Backups need to run in the middle of the day while users are working, and need to not interfere with their need for speed.

The reason I'm looking into rsync is that it is purported to be extremely fast...

Chronosync is essentially Rsync with a GUI. You can set it to sync two volumes instead of just doing a backup. So you could have a constant live backup, every file that gets copied will get copied to the server at the same time. This would be fast if you have a decent network and hardware.
