I recently had a major infection and have since removed it with a Kaspersky search and destroy program. I was running Avast, but the virus wiped out the Avast start up program, so I removed it and installed Avira. Even prior to installing Avira, non of my programs were able to access the internet. My hosts file is configured correctly, even my windows firewall will not and cannot be started. I also have cleaned up the registry but to no avail. When I start the wireless connection, the computer does not connect but it insists that its connected in the actual wireless network list. I am not very skilled with these issues, so any answer that is idiot proof would be great! :***

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything. Note if you cannot save things in C:\ then just save them to your Desktop. Make sure that you have disable UAC and rebooted first if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I ran all the programs, and followed all the steps. I am still having issues connecting the computer to the internet. If I try to repair the connection the error message-

"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed: Connecting to the wireless network

For assistance, contact the person who manages your network."

I know that there is nothing wrong with the network because my other laptop, which has been the work horse, has no issue with the internet and/or network.

I am attaching my logs. I appreciate your help bunches! :confused

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now reboot your PC.

After reboot, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
NOTE: No hardware info is showing in your logs for your network interface card. Do you have the software/drivers to reinstall it? Does the hardware show in Device Manager? If so, is there a yellow exclamation mark on it?

  7. ludonian

    ludonian Private E-2

I received a success message after I merged the file to the registry. I also ran the .bat file and attached the logs. No I don't have the software/drivers to reinstall the network interface card.

The only network adapters listed are- 1394 Net Adapter, Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and Intel PRO/Wireless 2200bg Network Connection. All without issue.

However, now my _NEC DVD+RW ND-6500A drive now has a yellow exclamation mark on it....

Different problem than what we are trying to fix.

Do you have System Restore points from a day or two before this problem began?

Okay based on what we are seeing in other similar threads, this infection may have broken system restore. However let's try it anyway and see what happens.

Try restoring to a point in time a least 2 to 3 days before you go this infection. No matter whether it works or not, continue with the below as I need a log from a new version of MGtools.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

I tried System Restore and got this message- Restoration Incomplete. I tried it twice with two different dates to be sure. Installed the latest version of MGTools. Here is the new Log.

Okay we have been able to get your IPsec service running with the registry patch we applied a few posts back but your TCP/IP and DHCP services are still not running which is why you cannot connect to the internet. I'm not sure why the logs make it look like now network adapted is in your PC. But since Device Manager has it and there are no errors, it should be okay. So let's continue.

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop and run it by right clicking and selecting Run As Administrator.

    Checkmark following checkboxes:
    • Flush DNS
    • Report IE Proxy Settings
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings
    • Report FF Proxy Settings
    • Reset FF Proxy Settings
    • List IP configuration
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List Devices -> All
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
Press Go and attach the result (Result.txt) that pops up. A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run from.

Now download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now open Repair_Windows.exe
    • Go to Start Repairs tab.
    • Choose "Custom Mode" and press "Start".
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • In the Custom Mode window, select the following repair options:
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Repair Internet Explorer
      • Repair Hosts File
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Windows Updates
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • If asked to reboot the computer for the changes to take affect, make sure other tasks in the program are not still running before accepting to restart.
    Reboot after running Windows Repair.

After this last reboot, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • Results.txt from MiniToolBox
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1
    Download Mirror #2
    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      afd.sys

    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. You can just close this notepad window since the log is already saved on your Desktop. Be patient! It may look like it is not doing anything, but it takes awhile for this to scan thru your whole system look for matches.
    • Please attach the SystemLook.txt log found on your Desktop to next reply.

Also copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Okay first we need to save a new registry patch to your Desktop.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files". Once you have saved it don't do anything else with it right now. Just move on to the next instructions.
Now please click Start, and type regedit into the Run box and click OK. This should open the Windows Registry Editor should open up.

Now follow the below instructions for changing permissions for registry keys using Regedit.
    • First navigate to the below registry key and have it selected
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_Tcpip\0000\Control
    • Then right click on this key and select Permissions
    • Then on the Permissions for Control for click the Add button
    • In the Enter the object names to select box type Everyone and click the Check Names button which should cause the Everyone text to be approved and underlined
    • Then click the OK button which returns you to the Permissions for Control form
    • Make sure you select Everyone from the upper list, and then in the Permissions form Everyone box, select Full Control and see if it allows you to click the Apply button.
    • Then click OK to control this Permissions for Control form
    • Now on the Registry Editor menu, clic File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the fixTCPIP.reg file we saved to your Desktop and select it and click OK ( double clicking on the file should also auto select it to import )
    • Did it import without an error message?
      • If not, then stop and tell me
      • If yes, then continue.
Reboot your PC and after reboot continue.

That cannot be true based on your logs. The registry entry was not imported. Did you change the Owner and Permissions on that key as I requested before trying to import the registry patch?

  24. ludonian

    ludonian Private E-2

I followed your instructions word for word. Just did it again to make sure. I will attach a new log. However when I went back to check it, full control for everyone is off and there is no sign of the registry import. Followed the instructions, made sure it applied, then imported the new entry with a successful message. Just tried it twice more. Still is not showing any changes.

    Attached Files:

  25. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

That's correct. It still shows that it has not been changed. Try Taking Ownership of each of the below for Everyone. Then set permissions to full for everyone also for each of the below. Then try importing.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_TCPIP
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_TCPIP\0000
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_TCPIP\0000\Control

Then exit the registry editor and restart it. See what the ownership and permissions are set to.

  26. ludonian

    ludonian Private E-2

It now says allow for everyone after the restart. Here is the log. Hopefully it is correct this time.

    Attached Files:

  27. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Okay then if you are sure the permissions were changed properly, then redo those instructions for running regedit.exe and importing the fixme.reg patch you made. If it imports without any errors, get a new log from MGtools.

  28. ludonian

    ludonian Private E-2

The permissions still say allow for everyone, but the import is not there after the restart. It says that it is successful and I can see it there, but after a restart it is no longer there. Multiple tries.

  29. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    Let's take some different steps.

    First uninstal Avira.

Is your copy of Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 8.0 actually an antivirus too?
Also is this paid copy of Spyware Doctor? If a free trial, uninstall it now.
Also if it includes an antivirus, uninstall it even if it is paid version.

Now download and save the current version of combofix.exe to your Desktop to use in the below fix.

Also download the below and save it to your Desktop too!!!!

    afd_XPSP3

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {472734EA-242A-422b-ADF8-83D1E48CC825} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E7E6F031-17CE-4C07-BC86-EABFE594F69C} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: avast! WebRep - {8E5E2654-AD2D-48bf-AC2D-D17F00898D06} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ApnUpdater] "C:\Program Files\Ask.com\Updater\Updater.exe"
    O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0022-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Comodo or Avira.

That is what ComboFix already did. NOTE: You need to put ComboFix.exe on your Desktop as requested!!!!

You still have lots of issues with broken services. We are going to need to do some brute force work here.

    1. Go to Start ==> Run (or Windows key+R)
      • Type the following in the run box and click OK: notepad c:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf
(note that there is space after notepad)
      • The above file will open in the notepad.
      • Under TCP/IP Primary Install section find the following: Characteristics = 0xA0
      • Edit 0xA0 and replace it with 0x80 (replace A with 8)
      • Under File menu click Save and close the notepad.
    2. Go to Start ==> Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection, and select Properties.
      • On the General tab, click Install a popup window opens.
      • Select Protocol from the list and then click Add.
      • A new window opens, click Have Disk....
      • In the browse... box type c:\windows\inf
      • Click OK.
      • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
      • On the Local Area Connection Properties screen select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Uninstall, and then click Yes.
      • Wait until it asks to restart, and then restart as requested. Continue with the below after restarting.
    3. Go to Start ==> Run (or Windows key+R)
      • Type the following in the run box and click OK: notepad c:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf
(note that there is space after notepad)
      • A file opens in the notepad. Under TCP/IP Primary Install section find the following: Characteristics = 0x80
      • Edit 0x80 and replace it with 0xA0 (replace 8 with A)
      • Under File menu click Save and close the notepad.
    4. Go to Start ==> Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection, and select Properties.
      • On the General tab, click Install
      • A popup window opens. Select Protocol.
      • A new popup window opens. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
      • Wait until it asks to restart, and then restart as requested. Continue with the below after restarting.
    5. After restart please run Farbar Service Scanner again and save the fss.txt log to attach below.
    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

      Then attach the below logs:
      • the new fss.txt log from Farbar's Service Scanner
      • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Your logs look good now.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
