    dearest all-knowing, benevolent 'geek' beings~

i ~have~ tried my best to find the "read first & run" manifesto but, despite seeing it mentioned i can't seem to find an active link to it and i've tried to research similar problems here but, i'm seriously overwhelmed... i know i haven't satisfied your prerequisites to make helping me, easier, so i'll understand if you don't bother with helping me ...on the off chance you decide to...
i just installed dsl on my father's computer and, it looks like, with an open connection something took over his computer - now attempting to log in to windows is an endless cycle of being bumped back out and, i cannot even get the computer to start in safemode and/or command prompt to be able to try to clean whatever infection, or work from the windows operating system cd and/or edit the registry to see if i can alter a setting that may be causing the endless loop...

if any of you could spare some of your time to help a little gnat like me even though i don't deserve it, i'd be just so incredibly grateful... thank you for taking time out of your lives to help us little people who don't know like you do... xoxo, princi*~

windows logs on then off and can't load safe mode or boot from cd... please help?

hi... i am just begging your help... something has taken over my father's computer after just installing dsl and it's my fault because i uninstalled his aol-forced mcaffee because it was also causing so many problems ...now the computer is stuck in an endless loop of logging on and (when you try to proceed by clicking "owner") logging off ...his computer is a compaq running windows xp - i can find out other info but will have to go over his house to... if i press f5 i am presented options to start windows normally or roll back to last known good condition or start in safe mode with command prompt and, neither last known good or safe mode work, same thing happens... i put my windows operating system in his computer and tried the safe mode w/ command prompt option and that didn't work...
    is his computer toast?
i have tried to read other similar issues and someone mentioned getting into BIOS ...i'm not sure how to do that ...i've asked on another site and, someone replied but actually refused to help me because they it's "too hard for someone who is not a geek" to handle - but if i knew how to fix this on my own, i wouldn't need help, so i am begging for guidance ...anyone, please?

before anything else, i want to thank you so much for responding - and i'm sorry i opened a new thread about a day after my first one :-o, i didn't realize that was "bumping" and, i was just worried nobody would want to help me because it's too tedious to help a newbie through such complicated things...

before getting started on, i need to ask about one thing ...i'm totally willing to attempt these steps manually but, of course if there's a "guided help" tool from MS for this i would have liked to use it, but... the tutorial on how to run the guided help says that when download (run) it i'll be given the option to use the tool on this computer or another computer - and i definitely need the "another computer" since i can't download the tool straight to my father's computer since his computer can't access the internet, can't even get into windows :) ...do you know if, some guided help tools just won't give you that option and you must run it from the computer you want to use it on for it to function?
if it's not an option for me ...i'll undertake the manual steps tomorrow - *deep breath*

Technically it is not a bump. It is just a duplicate thread which we don't want. And it would not get an answer until we get to it in the work queue which would be way after your first thread. The Don't Bump sticky explains the process by which we attempt to work.

You don't need to use the tool! You can just perform the steps yourself as long as you have your Windows boot CD or if you had previously installed the Recovery Console onto your PC which is part of our READ & RUN ME instructions when ComboFix is run. The procedure explains how to use the Recovery Console to restore a resgistry hive that "could" help you in cases where it is a registry corruption issue that is causing the boot problem.

thank you for all your help... i couldn't get the guided help tool to work anyway so i was going to take on the task manually but, when i was entering the dos commands, exactly identical to the instructions and, some were recognized by my computer but others weren't... and my father is very impatient and, i've wound up bring it to a computer professional which i guess is for the best...

i tried to find the "read & run" that you mentioned - there was a place where it was underlined and looked like a link but, it wasn't - but i don't know where...
i am just sorry i duplicate/similar posted - it was my first time posting and i was ignorant... thank you for alllllllllllll your help, i am so grateful!!!! princess

This is a sticky thread and it is on the top of every page in the Malware Forum along with all the other sticky threads. The READ & RUN ME is the 3rd sticky thread down from the top.
