Computer Freezes - Not sure what the problem is!

What a nightmare....the computer freezes randomly. The problem started about a week ago...the freezing is not all the time and I'm able to move the cursor but task manager won't come up so I have to keep doing a hard reset. A few days ago the problem stopped, but then two days later the computer starts freezing again. Doesn't freeze in safe mode though! Thank you so much for your help, in advance.

One thing I wanted to add was that it was impossible for me to get through an anti-virus scan. I attempted to do Trend Micro Housecall and when it was about 60 % through, it said 17 detections and then completely froze. I deleted AVG because Combofix said to and now I have Avira installed.

Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

So far after I did those scans, it hasn't frozen up. If you wouldn't mind, please take a look at my scans anyway. For a couple days last week, between freezing problems there were no freezing problems at all. I just want to know what the problem is/was and prevent that crap from happening again :)

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

Uninstall the below unless you deliberately installed it yourself.

    • WinSCP 4.2.9

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    C:\Users\Jennifer\AppData\Roaming\ParetoLogic
    C:\ProgramData\ParetoLogic
    File::
    C:\Windows\go
    DirLook::
    C:\Windows\System32\.xml

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

I went through every step. When Combofix ran, it froze on Completed Stage 2. Then I hard reset into normal mode and ran Combofix again, it froze again on Completed Stage 2. I hard reset and booted into Safe Mode and it completed, but during the scan an error message appeared in the system tray "Pev.cfxxe - corrupt file. C: SMFT is corrupt and unreadable. Please run CHKDSK". I haven't run CHKDSK yet.
Since yesterday when I was preparing to put this problem on the board, I haven't had any freezing problems (except the one mentioned above) after doing the scans.
Attached is the log! Again, thank you for helping me!

Could you attach the C:\combofix.txt please. The latest one from running my last fix was not included in the MGlogs.zip

When I fixed the line in HJT, it came back. Was it supposed to remove it?

I wasn't sure if you wanted me to copy and paste it, its huge.

    Here's the .xml file:

You were asked to use MSCONFIG to put this machine into normal start up mode, you have not done so yet and you need to.

Now boot into safe mode and repeat the HJT fix in post #10

and then reboot into normal mode again re run the getlogs.bat as shown also in post#10.

I see what's happening. Whenever I click on Normal Startup and hit "Apply", it automatically selects "Selective Startup" highlighting Load System Services and Load Startup Items automatically.

Ok just attach the log when you're ready. I have to sign off for the night now, bedtime.

Attach it even though its not allowing me to go into Normal Startup mode?

    Goodnight :)

    Good morning :)

    lol

I booted into Safe Mode in order to change Startup Mode to Normal Mode in MSCONFIG and it worked. Then I rebooted back into Safe Mode and ran analyse.exe. Then getlogs.bat and I've attached the newest log.

The remaining 06 line is not a problem.

    These folders still need deleting:

    • C:\Users\Jennifer\AppData\Roaming\ParetoLogic
    • C:\ProgramData\ParetoLogic

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I ran through all the steps. I installed Comodo Anti Virus and both times trying to do a scan today, it has frozen. It also froze once last night when my daughter was online. I stopped the antivirus scan today after it found a threat and quarantined it - c:\windows\system32\sysprep/LoadPEdrv.exe

I think what it quarantined something to do with Toshiba. You need to ask about this in the software forum ;)

It froze again while I was running Malwarebytes. I'm going to let it go the rest of the day without running any kind of scan and see what happens.

As I said, it does not look like you are having malware problems. Did you ever run CHKDSK?

Either way, this is not topic for the malware forum so I suggest you continue this in the software forum now. :)
