Quite a name you got there, gadge. When I first saw it I thought it said bigtrunks. So you were either a 400 lb wrestler, a globe trotter or a lumberjack. :confused

Well Kes, I don't want to put words in Joey's mouth, but wouldn't the obvious definition in the context of the post be this one?

"scottish term originated from monklands area meaning a five pound note, sterling"

    :-D

  10. bigtrucks

Not that I mind being called"sterling" but I'd rather be compared to the Person "Gadge" Not that I'm a mendicant that begs, thank you, but more of a teacher to those who are less fortunate in knowledge then I.I ask and learn then I teach/show to others what I have learned.:zzz
ANYWAY it's just a word/slang and it's only offensive if you let be offensive :p

I saw that definition when I Googled it. Not sure any of them have the right root.
Where I come from (Newcastle) a gadgy was a man, fair enough.
I moved to north Northumberland a few years ago and got caught up in a whole other dialect. Apparently, this dialect stems from the gypsys who had/have a strong connection with this area and the Scottish borders. Gadge is actually from the Romanian gadzo, a non gypsy man or woman. There are loads more but I don't want to bore the pants off you all.

Hey joey off the street' I Google Romanian gadzo, and found this

    http://ling.kfunigraz.ac.at/~rombase/cd/data/ethn/topics/data/names-pr.en.pdf
anywhere what you reference the name gadge from ? A word of caution if you don'tlike to read then skim. My understanding is it is merely a Heinz 57 name that has over centuries been used in different cultures having different meanings as it would appear. Very interesting reading though.

rolleyes I asked questions here so that I could understand a little better to what was going on with the pc
I started getting personally involved with pc info by asking before fixing the first part. Sorry, I am an inquisitive person who is overly eager to learn and to help others. (One of my down falls).
:confusedI'm not sure if i am still allowed to use the sight or just not allowed to post in the software forum anymore.
:-oI admit it was as the Major said crazy but I like others, got off the track . I am human not pc. But then pc's even make mistakes.
:(I'm hoping that I can get a second chance to prove I do know some things but, I'm not an expert or moderator or even an advanced and that's what I thought these forums where here for to help those who aren't and don't know, to learn so that they won't have to make the same mistakes over. Maybe as my other half says," I thought like a lit". It has no meaning which means I did think about it thoroughly before acting on it.
:highfiveThis is the most friendly oriented, informative, and easily to get hooked on place as far as I am concerned.
    :grouphugThank You for sharing it.

Yeah, as augie said, it went way off track.

What you need to do is stick with one problem in each thread. Start with the first issue, get that solved and then start a new thread with the next issue. That way it's not going all over. When you go all over the place in regards to computers, there is the danger of doing more harm than good to the machine.

I didn't get to read the whole thread, but if you think there is even the possiblity that there is malware, you should work through the Read and Run Me procedures before you do anything else.

    Good luck. :)

:confused Not sure where to go with this:
I'm trying to do the Cclean and I do remember in the other forum about registry. I am not sure if you're suppose to right click the reg intergity or not to uncheck the reg. I don't know if I should post this in the malware removal forum being I'm not removing any right now.Just asking where to go.Thanks

    Did you download ccleaner?

If so, just run it as is. It is very safe.

Are you sure there's no malware problems?

Once you run ccleaner, I would go through this thread to see if you can speed things up: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650

Otherwise, as Major Attitude says, the computer is older and it's just as fast as it's going to go.

If you have specific questions, do not hesitate to start a thread. :)

At this point I'm not sure of anything anymore. My ISP tech was just here repairing an issue we had with the internet and phone(I Hope).so everything was put on hold for a while. Should I just run another malware check before I go any further? The last one was about 4 days ago (give or take a day)with mbam and spybot. One last question would it be safe to just start a thread in the malware forum before I know anything ?

  29. the mekanic

    the mekanic Major Mekanical Geek

NO. Only start a thread when you have alot of good info, and explain yourself as thoroughly and in detail as possible.

For example, read this thread I just topped off.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=186008

    You will understand Major's point...

We do have private messaging if you need some proofreading first. I work nights, so I'm in bed somwhen between 6PM and 2AM, and at work until around 7AM (part time survival job) I'm usually on the forum in the afternoons off and on, E.S.T.

If you want help at MajorGeeks in relation to malware, the only way you will get it is if you go through the entire process found in this thread:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Are you having symptoms of malware?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

You need to figure out what you need help doing. Did you go through the thread I linked you to above on Maintaining your computer?

  32. bigtrucks

    bigtrucks MajorGeek

    Hey LauraR,
How are you? In answer to your questions:

1.If you want help at MajorGeeks in relation to malware, the only way you will get it is if you go through the entire process found in this thread:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

I started a thread in software because that's were I assumed my Problem was and in the mist of it all I got way off track . I was Told by MA that because I mentioned in the beginning of the thread that I Had malware before (but I have seen nothing in the logs and MBAM as well as SPYBOT and AVIRA also confirmed this by checking the logs on several occasions)that I had to do this whole thing over again if I wanted help from MajorGeeks. So that's what I'm doing.

2.Are you having symptoms of malware?
This pc I'm working on had the symptoms as do they now (intermittently)even though the scans run clean.

3.What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
I'm trying to find out why it runs extremely sluggish after cleaning it of spy ware and turning off some of the start ups and uninstalling a lot of unused/needed programs.(After reading the msconfig on start ups I realized I had to go back to normal start up in Which the pc seems to have slowed way back now or maybe it's just me)

4.You need to figure out what you need help doing. Did you go through the thread I linked you to above on Maintaining your computer?
I'm in the link that MA told me to go to after the mass confusion at the other forum/thread.

Did I answer your questions efficiently or did I leave something out because I am really getting confused on where I should start and what help I can receive . I am trying to understand why the pc is running the way it does even after doing the things I'm told to do to it.I'm getting mixed info and I just want to start in one place, the beginning, then go to the next like I thought I was.
I would be grateful for the proper direction. Thank You!

  33. bigtrucks

    bigtrucks MajorGeek

Also I forgot to mention the owner of the pc has aol and I know that can have a lot to do with it running slow(plus the fact that she didn't keep up with up dates of any kind for more then a year from what I seen). I just want to make absolute sure that she is ok before telling her to up grade the memory or change ISP.

  34. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

BigTrucks. If there is any doubt about malware and such, go here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 Get a clean bill of health from them. It will take some work on your part, and will take some time, because the folks there are good, but very busy, and are volunteers. Once you totally eliminate malware as a problem, perhaps we can work on speeding up the computer.

As MA said, you really need more RAM in it. I would say 512MB or 1GB would help out. But first, eliminate the malware possibility. Take it one problem at a time. Get malware free, then let's look at a possible RAM upgrade, then let's see if we can tweak a bit of speed out of the old beast! :-D

  35. Major Attitude

bigtrucks, sorry did not mean you, just too many easger people to help and a couple asking generic answers. My concern, and reason for closing the thread, was that it had gotten too confusing and out of control. I think all the tweaking in the world will still leave you with a fairly slow computer without upgrades, but I think we all got that now. Sorry you got caught up, but occasionally we need to remind people were here for quality help, not quantity. Welcome again, my friend :)

    Hey FredG
As I told LauraR, that's where MA sent me to and that's where I'm at now. I was clear of malware from the other sights(MBAM<SPYBOT, AVIRA)Should I just run another malware check before I go any further? The last one was about 4 days ago (give or take a day)with mbam and spybot avira. I'm running the spybot now but the mbam doesn't want to load up for some reason.(Plus pc has really done a turn about on the speed slowed even more). Was working fine about 3 days ago when I up dated it. (can't afford to pay for these programs so I manually run them. Better for me so I can see if they are running properly or not. they are programs and programs can foul up too.)
I know it's old.I know it's low on RAM. I know the AOL is bogging it down. Trust me I Know this. what I don't know is why I am here and not on an ISLAND some where at FIVE O CLOCK.-D
No seriously I just want to make sure there isn't anything else wrong with it before I let the owner know she has to let go of AOL or spend money to make it faster. I'm almost sure she'll go with the :cry first one BUT this person has shocked me with her choices before. And don't tell me about cheap or reasonable places to go. She will find a way to get it free or cheaper then cheap.:-D

I agree whole hardheartedly with you. But yes I was one of the overly eager people and that is one of my problems that I am working on. It's good to be eager but not to the point where you wind up right back to ground zero again. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything radically wrong before giving her the choice as I just told FredG.

Lounge is pretty much open. If it is controversial, go to the Hot Button area. Post count does not mean anything more than someone posts a lot. Jump in the Lounge or Hot Button areas! :-D Don't keep rank in your head. Just obey the Admins and of course BA! Jump in, keep it PG and all is well.

Once you get the all clear from the Malware department, we can attempt to speed up that computer a little. It is just pointless to attempt that if you have malware. It would be counter productive for you to be making other changes while you are getting all the malware removed.

Now once you get the all clear from them, we will look into what we can do to speed up the computer a little. :-D

I havent been able to read this whole thread thru, but you should follow the Read and Run Me First procedures aiming to get logs from running the following:

    • SUPERantispyware
      [*]Malware Bytes anti-malware
      [*]Combofix
      [*]MGTools.exe

Then attach the requested logs into a thread you create in malware removal.

Any questions you then have should be directed at whoever comes along to assist you there.

Is that module (stick) small, and rectangular? If it is, it is a SODIMM for a laptop. Desktop RAM is long and thin.

That came out of a laptop, didn't it?

In regard to AOL, you'll need to dig up her configuration settings, and save them somehow. That's about the only way I would guess it could be done. Never liked AOL, don't play with it.

I'm not even sure if you need the whole crappy software suite to use it these days, unless you pay for the whole package, which usually bogs down a PC more than I like to see. It's usually the first thing I :crap can on a fresh install.
