Greetings and welcome to the Major Geeks Malware Forum.

It is not uncommon for remnants to be left behind after an uninstall. McAfee usually has quite a number of them.

    Please do these things.

    ===================================================

    Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)

    --------------------
    • Download Farbar Recover Scan Tool for 64 bit systems and save(or copy and paste) the file onto your Desktop
    • Right click on the icon and select Run as administrator
    • Note: If you receive any warning about the download it is a false positive and you can ignore it. Click on More info to get the Run anyway option
    • Click Yes to the disclaimer
    • Click Scan and allow the program to run
    • Click OK on the Scan complete screen, then OK on the Addition.txt pop up screen
    • 2 Notepad documents should now be open on your desktop.
    • Please attach both reports to your reply.
    ===================================================

    Farbar Recovery Scan Tool SearchAll

    --------------------
    • Right click on FRST and select Run as administrator
    • Copy/paste the following in the Search: box
    Code:
    SearchAll: McAfee

    • Click Search Files button
    • When completed click OK and a Search.txt document will open on your desktop
    • Please zip and upload the file to GoFile, WeTransfer, or the file hosting site of your choice and post the download link in your reply.

I’ve tried to do this but my skill set is zero…..
Could I possibly format my laptop? Or is that complicated too?
So sorry for being stupid. Take note! Don’t get old.

Duly noted, though I am right there with you. Let's see if we can work through this.

Have you been able to download FRST64? If so, do you know what folder it is in?

I have got the FRST64 open....but how do I add it to my desktop?
And how on earth could I ever find out which folder it is in?????
It's just sitting there, with no option to save it anywhere....not even right clicking brings anything up...
    Arghhhh

Do you have any documents, pictures, music, etc. that you want to save?

    Nothing….it’s a new laptop.
Shall I uninstall the Avast software I put on?
Are we in different time zones? I’m in the U.K.

Yes, we are in different time zones. I am in California.

If you want to wipe the hard drive and start all over there is no need to uninstall anything.

When you first got the laptop did you turn it on and go through the initial steps to set it up. Create a name, set up internet, answer some questions, etc.? If we wipe the hard drive you will need to do that again. Just wondering if you are familiar with the process.

    Hi there,
I set it all up myself.....without any trouble! Wow! There is still hope for me!
I think it sounds easier to wipe the hardrive..
    Eeekkk...
    Kind regards

Just to be sure, you are OK to wipe the drive then go through the same process you did initially to set things up? Basically what we will be doing is taking your computer back to the same state it was when you purchased it and first turned it on.

Just want to make sure we are on the same page.

    Hi there,
    I think I've done it!
I've reverted back to factory settings...then deleted McAfee!
Fingers crossed.....looks like I've done it!
Thank you so much for being patient!
And thank you for your help!!!
    Kind regards

PS Which is the best free antivirus that is idiot proof?

    Nice job.

I use Microsoft Defender which is included with Windows and is free. It takes care of itself behind the scenes without bothering you and is automatically updated.

Not to put a damper on things but even after uninstalling McAfee lots of remnants are left behind. If you don't get any McAfee notices then it is no big deal. However, if you do, I can help you get rid of every trace of the program.

Just in case you want to consider removing all traces, I will include the initial steps we would take. You don't have to do it, just giving you the option.

Why am I not admin of my own laptop?

  22. Oh My!

Oh My! Malware Expert Staff Member

In order for me to evaluate the admin issue it would be helpful if you could run a FRST Scan.

Open the Downloads folder, right click on FRST64 and select Run as administrator. Once FRST64 opens click Scan. Once completed a FRST.txt and Addition.txt document will appear on your screen. Copies should also be placed in the C:\Users\peter\Downloads folder. Attach both files to your reply.
