Halo, did you hear anything about the PV eating up free space? Could it just be my version? I used Nero 6.6 to burn the ISO file if that could make a difference. Any body else reporting mysterious drive space use?

I sent a problem report to M$ last night about this, and I posted a thread on here last week asking if anyone else had the same problem. My problem is that what XP MCE 05 is reporting and what Vista is reporting for the same partitions is way far apart, even going to the command prompt for either version gets me different numbers, I don't mean a couple of mb's either, on the C partition where XP lives it reports a 6gb difference then what Vista reports for the same partition, and on the Vista partition XP reports a 2 gb difference in what Vista reports, the command prompt for either system is a lot closer to what XP says, but I can't find any 2 that match, further Norton agrees with what XP sees, but Norton will not run on Vista so I can't say what it says there. Really glad to see others having this problem besides me, And like I said it has been brought to M$ attention!

Well..... No they updated all of them, but according to M$ there is about 12 hotfixes coming for beta 2 Hmmm too short gotta lenghten it by 4 characters...oopppss just did

BTW, AVG now works with Vista, even 5472 thanks to MS fixing their code. We are still stuck with the Vista FW but at least we have something to choose from for a free A/V.:)

Avast Free also works well, even on x64.

DAKz do you have the Bug ID you reported, on the space anomaly? ( just so I can read and if I notice a difference can verify your bug.... but as I'm not dual booting I may not notice the space difference unless I before installing the 32bit version install XP and dual boot )

Not noticed it eatting space for me on the previous build but I will look more closely at 5472 in this area of PV points ( noticed mine in last version were all zero byte files ) and see if anyone else in the NG has reported this as well.

Nope Nero wouldnt have caused this as I use Nero 6 to burn ISOs, only issue you may have burning ISOs is if you burn at full speed you may get install errors to the likes of cannot copy file errors, but this can be fixed by burning the ISO at no more that 2.5x speed.

  8. BirdBath

    BirdBath Sergeant Major

I didn't really think it was Nero. I burned at 2.5 and had no problem with the install.

Any idea why I would have full folder PV's? Is there a setting I missed? I mean system restore in XP has settings for disk space use, maybe I changed something by mistake when I was changing permissions in the Reg?

Upgrade listings for Vista versions and which previous windows version can be inplace upgraded ( retain your settings and software ) or will need a clean install

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeinfo.mspx

However I would run the Upgrade Advisor app first, to judge applications compatability before doing an inplace upgrade, as at this moment in time, alot of apps are not compatible!

@Augie, I hope that they push back RC1 to back end of Sept and give the BTs another 2 months, with say a Beta3 release with fixes todate, 5472 x86 works great for me, WMC needs work... some poor naviagtion buttons evident still..."more tv" or any of the "more" options. x64, while quick... with 64bit hardware... still lacks driver support, MS need to kick some asses in the 3rd party companies to get a move on in this area.

However it wasnt a real hack in the sense of the term hack! She had to by her own admission run in Admin mode, if she was running Vista normally she would have been stopped in her tracks by UAC's prompt to allow the application to run in elevated admin mode,
plus she hit accept at the UAC prompt, however this is an area MS need to educate people on or fine tune the alerts as I agree with what she said later on in that article, in that users will just see a warning prompt and click "accept" without wndering about the concequences.. users do that now with popups.. hence the amount infected with malware.

I suppose it all comes down to common sense and education in the end. I just thought with Microsoft "Daring" people to get past the much hyped security of Vista it was kind of funny.

  16. BirdBath

I agree she didn't "Hack" the system in the most common use of the word and with them all trying to figure out a way it was probably going to happen. Users just have to be more careful not to feel more confident than they should using Vista.

  17. DavidGP

Yes totally agree education is a key point in relation to UAC, I fear many will read old news stories or listen to "in the know" friends and disable UAC becuse of its intrusive nature at present, even tho it will have evolved from the version she was using to,

The version she was using was an old build... Vista is 3 builds on from Beta2 CTP and due for another imminently to TB testers in the form of 5487 possiby, so from the scuttlebutt I read its a closed of route in the next builds to be released... not saying tho another avenue will not appear as it will.

So things will change... personally I still dont like the default status of the firewall at present ( MS touted this as being a fully working firewall... to me it is not in this version ), its bi-directional now, but outgoing packet filtering is off by default ( coz corportations gripped again.. remember Private Folder 1.0 ) plus its not as easy to add apps to the outgoing filter, in which ZoneAlarm et al are simple to do for the daily user... you have to be a techy to find the option and add apps

again things will change as their still is 6mths left in the development of Vista.

Nope, vista beta 2 is now closed. Unless you are a subscriber to MSDN that is.

RC1 will be the next public release, and only if you downloaded and Activated beta 2.

Besides, the small issues with explorer crashing when I try to delete a folder on the desktop, I have no issues, besides movie maker.

I really do not understand the nay-sayers about vista on the interweb.

  20. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

    Hey theefool :)

Did you upgrade XP to Vista B2 CTP or clean install? not had that problem with deleting from desktop as yet, maybe next build should fix that for you.

I'm getting no major issues at present a bunch of apps that dont work or dont work correctly ( many need to be installed as Admin, either by changing there properties to Run as Admin or right click the .exe and select Run as Admin )...

Finding some of the neat tools and updated apps great, the Photo Gallery is superb and quick.. great for small edits to Red Eye, Auto Correct is fairly good at getting toe colour and brightness pretty much spot on... cleaned up over 100 digi images the other day using just this basic app.. saved playing around with photoshop.

Snip Tool is a neat addition for screenshots or full screen or selective open windows.

System Health Report, could be a very welcome addition to gauging your PCs overall health, also supplies info similar to other PC reporting tools on Hardware Components installed. ( give you loads of info to look at :) )

TBH... alot of the nay-sayers havnt tried Vista but are repeating what they read, which is old news on old builds.. similar to Symantecs harping on about the core kernel mode security, they tested their findings on 5365!!!! that build was terrible and at least 2 builds before the Beta2 5384

Reliability Monitor another good tool to see whats not working correctly over a period of time, helps trace rogue apps down quicker.

Networking and Sharing Tools are much easier to use, with nice info and diagnostics.

Not trying to be the MS fanboy, but I have been using it for a while now from the builds that were poop to this latest one which is very usable daily and stable-ish. Vista has a long ways to go as some areas I still do not like, Windows Firewall for one, not defaulty at present bi-directional and the options to block outgoing apps is difficult to use, unless your very competent with MMC and advanced security rules. While Windows Media Center is build into a few versions, the main screens look superb but goto some other optiosn and it still looks unfinished.

Still has as I said a ways to go but is shaping up nicely IMO, no harder to use than moving from Win9x to XP :)

Vista Team blog where Pronetworks got their info http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/archive/2006/08/10/445959.aspx also good for upto date Vista news.

TBH.. they really do need another 2m CTP beta users to download and test RC1, while the latest to techbeta testers is better its still not 100%, better to have as many feedbacking on RC1 as many that downloaded may not have activated!

Just glad they let TB/TAP/MSDN users know first so the servers are not slow as molasses ;)

Yes, Halo, I did upgrade from XP. :) As soon as I buy a larger drive, I will re-install vista, since a fresh load at work runs great. :) Just took awhile to get the surround to work, but I got it working.

I'm loving Vista quite a bit, except for the explorer crashes when hovering a mouse over a folder on the desktop. Windows then pops up, later, saying "This is fixed in the upcoming RC1 build of Vista". :)

I simply bring up my handy cmd prompt and go to town.

Also, been browsing the registry changes, which, btw, I have been following since the nt4 days.

Looking forward to the new windows command shell. Been a beta tester since it first came when net2.0 was also a beta. :)

Still, love to know how to get into Tap. TB?

  24. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

TAP... your company would have to be signed up and involved with that in actively deploying betas from MS.

TB.. TechBeta testers are ordinary folk who have signed upto MS Connect and with info supplied on thr reg form have been invited by MS to test betas, or again with this route you can get invites from MS employees if you know any that are active with whichever beta your after. Odd occasions other TechBeta testers have been able to get invites fro friends etc

Which route did you take to test Vista and build you using at present theefool?

Well, I got on, during the PUBLIC beta 2.

Now the company I work for has a "partnership" with Microsoft. Gold plan (I think). We get monthly "how to sell MS products to the masses", along with all their software "1 year subscription", for SBS 2003 premium, and tons of other products. Which is good since our evaluation sbs 2003 server will expire in 30 days, Going to use the sbs 2003 server from MS to upgrade.

Can't really remember what program it is. I was hoping that it was TAP. Asked the Boss, and he had no clue what I was talking about. :| Cost us a mere $400 for this plan.

Funny thing is, I have access to a lot of betas from MS Connect, just not vista. Been on connect for almost 2 years. Well, started with beta.microsoft.com But, just can't get the Vista beta. Ergh.

    :)

Heck, I even beta tested AOL 1.0, way back when. :)

    Sorry for the rant.

Hmm, just noticed that I have 2 updates for vista.

Now that is something. I LOVE windows updates within vista. 100 times faster than xp and 2k, which were slow compared to 9x.

Being in the partner program, I'm sure allows you access to betas as in Vista the TAP route, as your boss doesnt know, maybe a call to MS will help in seeing what your Gold program allows?

    Okay...this is killing me!!!!!

Now that I am obviously interested in computers and will be persuing something in the IT world soon, I hope...I am just curious how you guys and whoever else that is involved...got involved in the first place!!

I'm always hearing about so and so testing such and such product, and microsoft always is giving stuff to people to test etc., etc.!! I can understand If you work for a computer magazine or a large corporation who happens to be partners with micrsoft or something to that effect, but I'm also reading and hearing of tidbits that practically anyone can participate if they have the know-how. Perhaps I'm not reading into this correctly or am I missing something just because I never asked!?!?

Unfortunately I didn't see this thread about this Vista release until it was too late, so I guess I missed that one too, but can someone kind of fill me in on how an individual would become involved in such activities...or isn't it even possible?!?!

Please excuse my ignorance if I am talking out of my butt here!!!!

I'd been with MS Connect or Beta Place as it was known for years, but was acutally after the Office 2007 test, but gained an invitation from MS to Vista instead, my Connect profile lists the very large institution I work for, so that seems to help as I get a few invites to various things.

Roger.. yes you need an invite, while you may not get Vista beta's now as Augie and I do, you may get other MS product beta releases by registering at Microsoft Connect.

I'm now on Vista Pre-RC1 5536. Wow, what a great difference from the public Beta 2 release. I know there are a few bugs with this one, but, my machine is running MUCH faster now. :)

BTW, unless I'm wrong here, which I don't think I am. If you were part of the Public beta 2 release, you can use the same key to activate this release, and when in 2 weeks the Public RC1 gets released, you can use the same key.

What I mean by this, is I downloaded Pre-RC1 at work, updated our test machine to this build, brought the cd home, and upgraded my home machine, with the same cd, but using different keys. Since this is the same ISO.

Also, if memory serves me, the key is acceptable for 10 computers.

BTW, the upgrade didn't work on my home computer, Explorer kept crashing, but a simple "end task" to the explorer process, enabled me to startup the setup file, via the command prompt. :)

Hehehe OK this should get a reaction real fast.

I just downloaded and installed the new version of Vista 5536 on my computer listed below! Was easy enough and only a few minor install problems, first since the Poweredge does not have a DVD drive (....yet!) Installed it using a virtual DVD drive, it asked me for my RAID drivers and as it does on any computer did not see the nvidia card or the NIC card. This was sloved by getting the latest drivers for both and installing them. The device manager in Vista sees all four processors, all the RAM, none of the SCSI cards and sees the PERC2sc/RAID card, now the welcome center sees only 2 of the processors and if I try to have it go through and look again it's BSOD time, so I don't ask it that anymore. Other then that it runs just fine sees all the drives, etc. The real comedy in this of course is the fact that M$ says you need an 800mhz processor or better to run Vista, but it is doing very well on this with a higher processor rating then on my Dell 1ghz PIII! ANd yes I am using the same CD key that M$ issued me for Beta 2 and yes it is for 10 computers.

  38. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Not sure if the rating system even considers quad cpus or even dual cpus. :)

  39. DAKz

    DAKz Corporal

I'm not sure either but I know the rating system listed only 2 of them but when it went to re-rate it after installing the new nVidia drivers it was BSOD when it got to the processor part, so my guess is No it doesn't rate 4 cpu's. But it is fun to watch Vista snap around in this thing!

Not that 1 week was enough time to fully test all of 5536, but I thought for me it was ok, had two regression bugs and 1 new one, plus had to edit and inf file to install a driver, Avast didnt work in this build due to Defender issue but it was stable enough for me to use daily... have a few hours to wait for 5600 as I'm getting both x86 and x64 versions.

The install of the OS is getting quicker, 35mins for me on last build.

But I guess we shall see if this milestone is better.

The problems I am having with 5536 is all other builds of Vista had a M$ driver of sorts for my nVidia card, this one doesn't and in typical XP fashion it only sees 2 of my processors, it loads very fast on mine, but I think it's a combination of the RAM upgrade (up to 4gb now) and the multple processors and improvements in the build. I am amazed it runs on this at all, but it does very well with the exception of two driver problems which were easy to fix. Kind of looking forward to the Final version.

Loaded up nice through XP in 33 minutes including the performance check, but I still can't boot off of the DVD. BIOS is set for the DVD so I don't understand why, but it's up and running. Now to go and install the x64 version for the first time. I hope the drivers are there!

Think everyone testing x64 says the same prayer augie ;)

Sound is the only one for me that causes grief in x64, I cannot use a PC with no sound, so after using and testing for bugs in x64 I revert back to x86 in which I have some drivers already downloaded that work if Vista or Update doesnt pick them up.

You are correct, I got an invite through a friend for Vista after submitting my reasons to join. It was not a done deal, but Wendy, who takes care of this, liked what I said. I'm not a beta tester per se, I don't have the patience to test say 4015, but I enjoy it in the latter stages when things work fairly well and I don't have to kill myself just trying to get drivers to work.I can only receive Vista related dl's etc., everything else is off limits for me.

Now to see if my printer works, it printed in x86 but the software wouldn't load on the 2360 Deskjet and I won't even try to get my Scanjet going. Not yet at least. ;)
