Okay, sounds good thanks. I actually did both: fixed the items in HJT and made sure that they were unchecked in Startup CPL. Thanks alot for that Startup CPL link by the way - I like it alot.

In regards to what u said in an earlier message about my ISP maybe not assigning an IP quick enough, I did an experiment: I hooked up another computer I have (computer 2), added a router, and tested the internet connection after a reboot on computer 2. There was no delay at all connecting to the internet on computer 2.

I don't really know what that means but I just thought I would give u that extra info to see if that helps u in any way.

    Thanks man,

    Markus

Okay! Put the first computer on the router too and tell me if there is any change.

I'm heading out for awhile now. I got a meeting to go to. Be back in 3 to 4 hours (I think).

Yea, It's on it now but there is no change.

I've attached the 2 ipconfig files u asked for.

By the way, the files are exactly the same. The way I know that is when I tried to attach the files, the fiel upload program thought they were the same file, and wouldn't allow me to upload the 2nd one, even with different names. Only when I opened ipcgf2.txt and added the text "#2" was I able to upload them both.

    Thanks,

    Markus

I had a typo in my instructions which had you write to the same file name in each step. Hopefully you realized that and ran the ipconfig /all into a new file each time. Is that a true assumption?

When you were attempting to get the ipcfg1.txt file was the system in the 2 minute wait mode to get an Internet connection? Maybe I should have written it this way:

Next time you boot you PC, as soon as you can run Internet Explorer and make sure you are in the 2 minute wait mode. And quickly open a command prompt window by click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click okay.

In the cmd window type ipconfig /all > c:\ipcfg1.txt followed by the enter key.

Could you get me an ipconfig /all output from the PC that works. Also a couple of questions:
    1) when you got these outputs, it looks like you were connected to the router still. Right?
    2) does the PC that works have all the same programs loading at startup that the problem PC does?

Try using Startup CPL to disable the loading of the below and see if there is still a problem.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] "C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eDonkey2000] C:\Program Files\eDonkey2000\eDonkey2000.exe -t
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [diagent] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\Diagnostics\diagent.exe" startup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\MESSEN~1\ypager.exe -quiet
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Steam] "c:\program files\valve\steam\steam.exe" -silent
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - Global Startup: Acrobat Assistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

    Hey man,

Yea, I realized the typo and did it right. The first file was made during the 2 minutes before the internet connection was made and the second one was made after the internet connection is made.

Also, some more info: during those 2 minutes waiting for internet explorer to connect, I can succesfully ping a web site. So I guess that means that the network IS connected but Internet Explorer isn't? I'm not sure man but it might mean something 2 u...

    To answer your questions...

    1) I was connected to the router when I got those outputs.

    2) No -the computer that works has a different setup.

now, on the problem computer - I have tried disabling all the startup items in Msconfig to see if it would make a difference and it didn't. But I'll try it right now using Startup CPL and let u know.

I've attached the ipconfig file for the computer that works.

    Thanks man,

    Markus

I want you to try a few things (obviously we need to reboot each time):

    1) reboot your PC and do absolutely nothing for say 10 minutes (go get a snack). Then come back and run Internet Explorer. Is it still slow to connect?

    2) what if you temporarily change the startup page to something else like www.majorgeeks.com. Is it still slow to connect?

    3) Instead of running Internet Explorer I want you to click Start, Explore to bring up Windows Explorer. In the address bar enter your start page, http://www.my.yahoo.com/ , and hit return
    Is this method slow too?

I think I know where u r going with this and this bit of info might answer all 3 questions for u. U see, when I have Yahoo messenger set to start on boot, that (Yahoo Messenger) also takes the 2 minutes to connect. So, in that case, I'm not even trying to open an Internet Explorer browser to connect - I'm just waiting for Yahoo Messenger to connect. Does that help any or do u still want me to run those tests?

    Thanks,

    Markus

Sorry man, I never got to it last night. Probably better that we both got some sleep! - lol.

Anyway I did steps 1 and 3 and both times there was no problem or delay.

    Talk to ya soon,

    Markus

Okay so it appears like your PC is not done configuring something the Internet Explorer requires (but Windows Explorer does not) for another 2 minutes or so after you think all active is done.

Reboot your PC and at the point where you typically try to start IE, don't. Do the following instead, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up Task Manager and select Processes see if you can see a process using CPU time during those first 2 minutes and then the CPU useage drops.

I am really sorry to have mislead u. I meant to say there was no difference. Let me explain it better: When I waited 10 minutes, there was no delay. When I opened Windows Explorer during the 2 minutes, there was a delay (just like if I opened Internet Explorer). Sorry to have miscommunicated that to u.

Ive tried EXACLTYwhat u said about looking at the CPU memory during the 2 minutes and then the CPU usage drops. And I didn't see anything that stood out. I guess that means that whatever process is taking so long, it might not be taking up too much memory.

Man, I hope ur not discouraged cause I'm starting to be! Talk 2 ya soon ;) ,

Okay! In reality that makes more sense to me. Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer share much of the same code so it would make sense that the problem would occur in both.

However since it does not happen if you wait long enough after rebooting it still appears to be that your system still has something else going on and that causes the delay. What it is I'm not sure of yet. But since your IP addresses are already setup okay right after boot (we checked with ipconfig), it appears to not be lack of DHCP assignment. And if you wait 10 minutes (just one example) there is no delay. This rules out a problem the first time IE is run after reboot.

Try rebooting and immediately opening that command prompt window and enter the following and tell if you get replies or time outs:
    ping 192.168.0.1
    and then ping yourself
    ping 192.168.0.100

Okay sounds good. I did what u said (immediately after reboot) and I got replies on both. I've attached the file if u want to see.

    Thanks!

Each spyware scanning program has the ability to find/fix things that others do not. It's a matter of what they have designed into their program. I have seen this particular one and also SpySweeper find a few things that did not show up in a HijackThis log. So I'm hoping that maybe they will pickup on something. Otherwise, I would have to say that you PC just isn't ready to connect for two minutes.

By the way, could you time how long it takes from the time your turn on the power to the time where IE finally loads the start page?

Also, please post a StartupList log from HJT. To do that, run HJT, click Config, Misc Tools, and now you will see the "Generate StartupList log" button. First select the check box to List also minor sections (full). Then click the Generate StartupList log. Save the log to a .txt file and post here as an attachment. This finds all kinds of additional items that run at boot time but will not show later in a running process list because they have already terminated.

What about the Giant Antispyware scan and the timing info?

I see Giant is installed, but did it find anything? If so, what? And did it fix it?

I did not see anything obvious in the StartupList log!
