seeing as its the PCI card you are uninstalling im assuming this would have been pre-installed in your Dell machine so have the Dell CD ready, however XP has a vast resource of drivers and you may find it will automatically reinstall the device, if not you will be prompted to insert the cd

OK, I uninstalled my cable modem via the control panel. I rebooted and it had reloaded automatically so I didn't need to use the cd. But, the bad news is the redirect is still there! Are we having fun yet?
    What's next?
    Thanks guys. Best regards. Nancy.

ok Nancy well im sure its no fun for you :(
How about running the windows xp scanner to look for possible failures?
Open your command prompt and type
    netsh diag gui
This will start the troubleshooter then set the scanning options and make sure you tick all the boxes in the categories section, run the tests then when finished look for any marked Failed in red. you can then expand those for further details, post back with your results

    another thing you could try

    go to start.. run. type

    NOTEPAD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS
    hit enter

a file should pop up that looks something like this

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

if there is anything below this line.. DELETE IT ALL and save the file.. then make the file readonly and test to see if the redirect is still there.

Hi Kodo unless im mistaken when i read through all of Nancys problems, Chaslang had already been through her hosts file and it came up clean
This sure is a tuff SOB to fix

very well could be Gen.. I just skimmed the past few pages.. better safe than sorry. I want to see this machine first hand.. I want to touch it and then scream at it like i'm going to castrate it with hedge clippers..

    Nancy,

You were supposed to uninstall your network card which is part of your PC. What do you mean you uninstalled the cable modem via the control panel? I would expect the cable modem to be transparent to your PC. It is just brings in an ethernet interface to your internal network card.

  9. ncroots

    ncroots Private E-2

That's why I asked you if I was in the right place... :) There was nothing under device manager that said network card. If it's not called that, what would it be called? Remember guys, I'm a user, not a geek. I do what I'm told...

I was in Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager.
I uninstalled CNET PRO200WL PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter, it reinstalled on reboot.
Repeat for me please where I should look for this "network card" and what else it may be called???? Sorry to be dumb here but I've never done this before...

I will post the "failed" results from the Network Diagnostics in the next post.
    Best regards. Nancy.

Okay Nancy, dont worry from reading your posts yes you did re-install the correct device, sometimes the terminology can be confusing :)
Failed results that sounds promising, maybe we are finally on to something if we can find the exact problem we can fix it :D

OK General, here are the results. In a nutshell it basically says that the IPAddress 24.186.100.85 was pinged and timed out four times in the Network Adapter section and again in the IP Address section:

That is your network card. You just said the wrong thing in a previous message when you said cable modem. The PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter is your network card. It may be worthwhile reinstalling the drivers from the Dell disks rather then letting the system reuse what it already has.

    Grrrrr.
Why not? I've tried everything else. I guess that obviously I don't reboot, just load the cd...

    Be back soon...
    Thanks again. Nancy.
By the way, I've also done the obvious like make sure the connection (the actual wires) is ok, cleaning them and their sockets as well (which I do often anyway as a part of regular maintenance).

Wait a minute the debug log did indicate a failure on the network adapter.

General & Kodo, I have not played in that area too much with WinXp but is this equivalent to older Win OS's where they showed a yellow exclaimation point to indicate a problem with the hardware or its installation?

hi chas i was assuming that when Nancy was in Device manager she would have spotted a warning triangle???Although it could well be hardware problems this may explain the random nature of this problem
anyway looking at the log its failing on that specific IP? couple more things we could try
Nancy can you go to Start-Run-and type Services.msc-ok
then look for a service called IPSEC and see if its started, if so please stop this service and re-try your connection
Otherwise maybe worth trying to renew the ip
Open a command promt and type
    ipconfig/release
    then
    ipconfig/renew

I'll do that next but first, there was no warning triangle in the device manager. The Network Adapter section looked normal as did the ethernet adapter within it.

Second, I did uninstall it again and ran the reinstall from disk. It installed but during the process I got a warning:
"Spooler Sub System App has encountered a problem and needs to close." The error signature said:
    szAppName: spoolsv.exe

It just occured to me what you may have meant... Do you think that my Motorola cable modem may be bad?

    Best, Nancy.

Well, I think I solved it. I uninstalled Zone Alarm. The redirects stopped. I reinstalled Zone Alarm and they came back again. I don't think the conflict is with Zone Alarm however, I think it's with Norton Internet security (the reinstall of Zone Alarm was a brand new version, the old one completely removed). During one of the many, many, spywear and virus scans, the action corrupted Norton's firewall somehow. Before the TVMedia hijacker Zone Alarm and Norton Internet Security worked fine together, for at least a year if not longer. Each had features I liked but neither had all I wanted. Ironically, just turning them off, one at a time or together, did not reveal this in many of the tests we did. There are other odd things going on with Norton since all of this happened as well, so that's why I suspect it, not Zone Alarm. I'll probably uninstall it (Norton) and reload it and test again.

Once I resolved the problem I did some google searching on the shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm problem. I ran into at least two instances where Norton Internet Security seemed to have been the culprit after running Spybot S&D. SSD fouled something in the firewall. So, everyone may want to keep their eyes open in the future! This is bound to happen again and again given all of the hijackers out there!

Four weeks! I'm exhausted from all of this. But, I want to extend my sincere thanks to all of the wonderful people on this forum for sticking with me. General Lee Stoned, Chaslang, Kodo, Major Attitude, and everyone else. You are terrific. I really mean it. I hope I never tie you all up in knots again, but I will visit back from time to time to read up on what's going on out there.

Thanks, from the bottom of my heart. Nancy.

whew im glad you got it sorted Nancy, sorry i got sidetracked last night and had other things to do :(
But this problem has been bugging me all day, i had my suspicions all day about firewalls just couldnt put my finger on it, i think i worked out why the ping results were failing as that particular IP was your personal IP and one of Zone Alarms features will make your address unpingable
Strange though that even in safe mode it still redirected, never mind as Chas posted we do love a challenge :)
Anyway be sure to stick around and keep yourself up to date and hopefully save yourself any future problems
