    I was an Locomotive engineer for 41 years, now retired from Union Pacific Railroad. Did passenger and freight. Over the road. Meaning I left town by me and went out of state to take a train to wisconsin from illinois. And back again. Piloted steam engines along the pikes thru the years also. On 200 mile pikes. Locodave, Kind of Loco, but what I did for years. Trained 100-200 trainees thru the year on how to do it.

    You "Run" trains from the seat of your pants. Meaning. Feel it getting heavy or a light feeling. Mile or longer train with slack in it to control. Over and down the hills. Had an edjumaked arse, after all them years, lol. More power or not. Horse power today. Link up 3 locomotives. 4,300 hp each? Some had 6,000 hp. Allowed up to 8 married together. Had to deal with tons per hp. Some pikes were 1 to 1. Pulling 8,000 ton? only allowed 2 4,300 hp locomotives on line. 8,600 hp at my finger tips.

    Some pikes were 1.5. Large hills. Same 8,00 ton train = 12,000 hp allowed = 3 engines on-line 12,900 hp I could use. Kicked them up to 50 mph, passenger allowed 70 mph.

    Tell the truth, not often, sometimes I put more online to run them like I stole it. Long train I needed to get over hills on a 1.0 that didn't have the hp to make speed. Called on it, when found out. Explained I needed to get out of passenger territory. I was given a pass.
