    Ok?.... just... OK???? lol

If you like RPG's or enjoyed any of the Elder Scrolls or Fallouts then chances are you will become addicted to Skyrim within 2 hours lol

IMO it was/is worth every penny, I'm 70 hours in and probably about 50% complete....

I gave up and installed NwN2 on my back-up PC, that still runs WinXP on 5+ years old hardware, and unsurprisingly the game runs fabulously on this system. 12 hours in, and loving every moment... :)

Actually not a bad question as specs mean a lot these days in high end gaming!? I would like to know your specs as I know Minsys and mine are well above normal but what are yours?? (@thesmokingun, not attacking just curious as to specs of your PC to make a judgement )

Gotta jump on this band wagon too!
Although Skyrim is possibly one of the best looking games for environments (yes it is if you can run it) , it can look a little blocky up close on things like walls and stone walks etc but 95% of the textures and effects are breathtaking.

As for the combat.... it's the Elder Scrolls..... wouldn't feel right if the combat worked properly :-D
Actually I thought the combat was very well upgraded, I think what a lot of people don't like is there is no sort of auto-aim like you get in FPS's, it is totally down to YOUR positioning and timing.

Agreed. The Guy has been playing with the screenshot feature in Steam and the results are here. That's not vanilla, far from it, but that's off-set by the fact that Steam for inexplicable reasons messed up the screenshots when uploading them and either reduced resolution or something similarly damaging. These screenshots all looked much better in person than after upload, and that should tell you something.

As David said, my computer specs are way above average, since the PC running Skyrim in my house is one that has been built specifically for high-end gaming and has been upgraded to stay reasonably current, but we made sure to run unmodded Skyrim before prettifying it, and I would still not call it piss-poor graphics by any stretch. Buggy as all ****, yes, but that's Bethesda for you. ;)

Yeah, well, there's mods for that too... Unless you're playing on console, of course. ;)

  10. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

Console?.... you mean like an instrument panel? :-D , I don't know why but I have had lots of problems with modding games, I managed Arma 2 okish but even then I couldn't get the mod prog to run and ended up doing it manually.
I tried modding Oblivion with disastrous results concluding in my re-installing the game. Now I realise it's probably something I did wrong since I'm terrible for glancing over instructions and working out as I go along and then read the info when I can't figure something out, by which time I have already messed it up and got files everywhere :-D

Maybe I'l get into modding it soon and see how I go.

Honestly, I haven't played Skyrim, but most (all?) newer PC games are optimized for DX11, so if you're running XP (maxes at DX9c) or Vista (DX10 by default; DX11 update is available) you're going to get A LOT less detail in just about everything.

    DX11 for 32bit Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=e1199d12-5b23-4769-b1e0-210ee147ce15
    DX11 for 64bit Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=e2da6ef8-92b6-4370-9e22-2c05a8c37ab0

I also found this update at the trusted Guru3D site.... I'm not sure how/if it differs from the Microsoft downloads, but it's a single file for both 32bit and 64bit versions of Vista.

Be sure that Vista SP2 is installed, plus any/all updates before installing the DX11 update.

Of course, your video card must support DX11 also, so an Nvidia 4xx series card or higher, or an AMD/ATI HD5xxx series card or higher is required, and it's ALWAYS a good idea to use the latest non-Beta drivers.....

No attack here either but if you think that the grapics are awful, somethings wrong.

Now clunky combat? Maybe, if your not used to first person combat and your using it in first person. Id say it plays better than past elder scrolls games combat wise, and less clunky than say, fable.

Let me clarify, when i say piss poor graphics, i mean that there's alot that could have been done way better. for a "brand new" game engine, i don't see the superior quality. My specs are fine, played at high settings without a hitch. I might have been spoiled with battlefield 3's graphics which are beyond anything out there right now, but you also need a decent system to play it well.

  16. Mimsy

So when you say "piss-poor graphics", what you actually mean is "did not live up to my hugely inflated expectations that somehow entirely managed to miss all the pre-release screenshots"?:-D

Come on now. Since when is the game engine the biggest factor in a game's visuals? Realistic expectations, please. ;)

  17. Nedlamar

It's simple, if you don't like the game then that's your choice, but you can't bash a game because it doesn't meet YOUR standards which are likely higher than is possible.
Once again this comes down to my old argument of (in this case something like) loving Oblivion, awesome game, would love to see a sequel etc etc.
Then they make one that is a sequel!... In gaming terms this is usually an upgraded version of the game you loved. If everything is improved as it is in Skyrim..... where is the complaint?
If you didn't like Oblivion then you are not likely to enjoy Skyrim.

Perfect example of the oposite would be Far Cry 2, while it was a good game, it had nothing to do with Far Cry and should have been called something different since it was basically GTA in Africa.... Grand Theft Africa :-D

As Mimsy said, too many people are expecting too much, they want a new game every year but they want a new engine and a totally unique and genre changing game.
    Sorry, not possible.

I'm convinced Crysis was meant to be Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 2 was meant to Crysis.

If you think about the marketing far cry 2 sold on the back of Far cry even though it was a mediocre-ish game and Crysis sold on its own back mostly due to its engine like Far cry 1.

Far cry = beaches, compounds, forests, vehicles, private military Vs good military investigating, power suit, science and mutants.

Crysis = beaches, compounds, forests, vehicles, private military Vs good military investigating, power suit, science and aliens.

Far cry 2 = Fight between various military factions in africa, vehicles,a little sand box role play but pretty standard shoot em up.

Now back to your scheduled Skyrim graphics argument:-D I think the graphics are awesome probably the best in any RPG,one thing to note its unfair to compare graphics of role playing game with that of a shoot em up you should only compare them with other RPG's since there are about 3 billion more objects to model, the maps are 100 times bigger and there's about 100 hours more gameplay.

Agreed, I had this same discussion with my son, I made the point that BF3's attention to detail was pretty good close up because thats where your attention is, Skyrim is a breathtaking world that you take in from a far.
Could you imagine the amount of sheer power you would need to put BF3's physics engine into Skyrim?.... I want that machine! *drools*

Well started Dead Island this afternoon, Quite impressed with most of it.
It looks very pretty, clever use of light albeit static light for the most part but it still looks gorgeous.
Controls system works well with the exception of the mouse sensitivity, if you have it set so it moves easily in the menu (which you spend a fair bit of time in) then it's manic in FP mode, switch it to FP mode being sharpe but controllerble and the menu is sooooo sluggish.
Fortunately I can switch my DPI on the fly so I have set my mouse up to 1 click between the 2. But this would annoy me if not for my mouse.

Otherwise gameplay is good, lots of fun.... extremely violent :-D

For anyone thinking this is just Left For Dead.... well you're half right, this game is pretty much Left For Dead meets Fallout 3.

Worth a shot if you like Action RPG's and have a healthy obsession with Zombies :-D

I disagree completely with this. for what we pay for these games we should be gettting the absolute best they can give us, and well, for years now, we've been getting the short end of it. I do like some rpgs, and they have had good graphics, although, the ones I liked didn't have very large environments like skyrim. I'm just saying they could have done better IMO. yes, i blame this mostly on the fact that they only make what will play best on a console and don't keep up with new tech (come on, no dx10 or 11?? ) ;) that's stuff's what 3, 4 years old now?
Instead we get rushed products once a year (COD anyone?) and it shows.

to get a little taste of what I expect, which they will both probably be buggy when released, like anything else:

There are few games most people can trully max out with full anistropy,AA and post processing effects, people say they can you see them all over youtube that they average 60 fps but their minimum which is THE most important number could be something like 30-40fps which for me is unplayable.

Its a double edged sword is they did take advantage of the latest engines and effects every year and maxed out the polygon count most people wouldn't even be able to run them and medium settings,I have a gtx590 and I still have to find a balance between performance and quality by varying the settings there are few games I can trully max out without fiddling.

Game designers knows most people can't afford to upgrade their system every 6 months just for some new cool tessellation, water and smoke effects in the latest DX's,if they did do this they would have to rewrite the whole game as the best games have been devolopment for years delaying launch possibly indefinitely and penalising the bulk of their consumer base, the average gamer...

Oh yeah! I'm currently playing on Twisted Metal Black on the PS2:-D This is THE final game I've buying for the PS2,I've now completed every single decent game on the PS2,at least every game that received above about 85% on gamespot.

I can see florescent lights flicker, seriously:(

I guess unplayable is relative,I do settle for less than 60fps sometimes but only if there's a goodie I just can't live without like AA.

  27. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

Aww man that sucks, I remember reading a fair bit about this when an argument broke out on a forum about whether more than 60fps is pointless.
I found out that a common thought is the human eye can only see a max of 60fps, hell I've read 30fps.
Turns out from all the different places I got info that it simply depends on the person, tests have proved above 140fps can be seen.
Personally I have always been happy with 30fps, I played for many years struggling to get a steady 20fps.
I have played Crysis and Arma at less than 20fps average and dropping to 6-8 :-D

On topic... Been playing MW3 online tonight, starting to notice that of all the COD's this one is the most balanced. There is only 1 thing a majority complain about and thats the akimbo'd FMG9's (I think thats what they called lol)
It's nothing to do with what they are or that there's 2 of them, they just seem retardedly acurate, even at distance.
Other than that , nothing in it annoys me at all.
    Very well laid out.
Anyone who says this is MW2.5 is either simply a BF3 fanboy or has never played it.
They have changed a LOT and the more I play, the more I realise that at least on PC, MW3 is a pretty even game, not too often you get that one man with 38-2.
    Enjoying it. :)

Still playing NFS The Run. I invested in a headset which I very quickly have come to realise could have been dead money. There's grown men on there being racist, cruel, derogatory, swearing like dockers, and they majority of them all say I sound like a man.... LOL!!! Some of them do not believe I am female (my voice is quite deep and the more I smoke the worse it get's haha)

Last night they were criticising me for only using the handbreak to race, and I was laughing at them because they just did not like the fact I was on that podium each and every session. ;) The more abuse they shouted at me the better I drove, but the headset has been buried for a while.... :( Shame.

You'll a;ways get those guys who think the best tactic is trash talking, what makes me laugh is when they don't have a mic and type their rants/insults.
And while they are typing , you kill them which means they then have to call you some other names for not waiting for them to finish typing, and while they are typing that message you kill them again :-D
This leads to a lot of text :-D

As for what I'm playing, bought and played Anno 2070 yesterday, good game. Quite different from other City Builders I've played, this almost feels like Command & Conquer without the massive armies and more emphasis on ecology and economy.
Looks pretty, plays well, and unlike other CB's I havn't fallen into the abyss of losing money to the point where you cannot possibly pull back into positive funds, which is nice.
I always hated that, you get a bit ahead of yourself in building and then you realise you are losing thousands per month/year and you start deleting buildings that cost you money but then you have unemplyed and people start leaving and the effect spirals out of control quickly. Anno is different, when you see your finances start to falter there are several easy-ish ways to bring it back up.
Having said that I've only played sandbox with the Ecco's, the Tycoons (or whatever they called) could be different since they are money driven.

All in all, if you liked C&C and you enjoy CB's then this will work for you. Not quite as awesome as I thought it would be but I'm pleased I have it.

downloaded ff1 and 2, chrono trigger, ff7, breath of fire 4 and kingdoms of amalur demo.

started out with chrono trigger but had an urge to play ff7 and havent put it down since.

although before hitting that i did run through the koa demo and it was quite entertaining on the ps3. going to play it on the pc before i decide on which copy to buy but i do plan on buying it.

kind of reminds me of baldurs gate dark alliance (gameplay and cutscene wise) and has a decent storyline with some decent leveling mechanics. I have a feeling the longer you play it, the better it will get as well.

but i expect no less from the combination of RA salvatore, todd mcfarlaine and the director of oblivion.

The difference between the two is that Valve has been running Steam long enough that they've managed to build a solid track record of treating their customers fairly, and keeping our information safe. Their past behavior lends credence to their claims of protecting privacy and providing good customer service.

EA has, in the time they've had Origin, managed to collect personal user information without telling us about it, and planting what was nearly a rootkit on our computers. There is nothing in their past that indicates that they will be having good sales on digital content, and on EA/Origin, your forum account is the same as your client account. Not only is that a brutal violation of account security, it's a bad sign because their forum moderators are inconsistent and not willing to reconsider. If you're banned from the forums you are banned from the client, and there is no appeals process.

I buy from Steam, yes, and the reason I do is because it's a good service with a good track record, because the client works well and doesn't interfere with gaming, and they keep my account safe. (Example: They hash and salt forum account details, even though the Steam forum accounts are forcibly kept separate from client account details.) I have absolutely no problem with digital distribution, in fact, I love it. But only if it is done well. Amazon's mp3 service with DRM free files and a cloud player is another good example.

But I won't touch Origin, for the same reasons I won't touch Games For Windows Live: Because the companies behind them have a glowing track record of f-ing up any PC game concept they touch, and until they prove differently, I'm not willing to give them the benefit of doubt.

I'm playing Call of Duty black ops ATM,it's the first game I've played on my 46 inch monitor:-D Its a HDTV really 1080p:p and its freakin awesome I don't think I'm going back to gaming on a tiddy monitor.

Everyone hated steam and hence valve when it first came out bundled with games where you needed it to work such as HL2,even me. But I have got over it,I actually prefer having my game incorporated into steam so I don't have to keep swapping disks or looking for patches and updates.

I like Valve and I think they're an incredibly dymamic ingenious company much like Google was but like Google they must be challenged and not dominate the market as that's bad for us so I think its great when other companies compete for a share of the market but they have to learn to do it by coming up with better idea's and services and so far none of them have come close IMO so as Mimsy said resorted to some pretty questionable practices.

TBH I think its time for other companies to accept defeat anyway,Steam has won the gaming distribution war and no amount of underhanded tactics will change that,it will just make them look bad.

  43. Mimsy

As do I. Like I said, DD done well is great. But another reason to wait on Origin is what you just said about Steam when it first released. They had lots of problems in the beginning, but thanks to simply sticking around for a long time they now have a mature and stable service, and that good track record I was talking about earlier.

Origin is too new for us to know anything about them, how they'll behave and manage accounts, and only time will tell. So I'm waiting and watching, like I did with GFWL, and with them, I'm glad I did, since that turned out to be quite a mess in the end.

Yup its didn't work properly did it:-D I can laugh now but it wasn't fun when I'd just spent £35 on an original disk game then I couldn't play it because steam didn't feel like connecting to its server and offline mode didn't work not to mention the numerous crashes.

To be fair though I have seen quite a few complaints about valve's customer service being lax too but as with everything on the internet its hard to know who to believe, there are a lot of people especially kids who try to hack their accounts or run illigitimate code so they can cheat online then are surprised when they lose their account and co no longer play ANY of their games.

Again though I've never had to contact steam with a complaint or dealt with their customer service so I can't comment on it.

Still playing battlefield 3. and it requires origin. I even purchased the game through origin. The experience was fine. The best thing was, I was able to download the game and have it installed 3 days early so it was ready to play at release (installed and playing at 12:01ish) This was much better than waiting in line at game stop at midnight to pick up the hard copy, go home and install for 20 minutes. I will do this for any/every game that I play from now on. I only wish that steam and origin will one day recognize all games so I can do in-game chat and other options for non-steam/non-origin games. Xfire will do this but since it's required to run origin for origin games, and steam for some steam games, it would be nice to only have one of them running while I'm playing a game.
