Re-occurring Malware on my system...need advice

This being my first post, let me say that the info and advice contained on this site has already been very helpful to me. The instructions are thorough and clear, even for a computer neophyte such as myself.

    My Problem

Over the past few months I have been plagued by the detections of trojans and other nasty malware on my main computer.

I am pretty sure I know how I was initially infected and I have moved to curb my riskier internet surfing habits.

My main problem is that I cannot seem to root out the infections. Recently, I have been having trouble installing new programs and fully uninstalling a few old programs, usually the error message involves some strange temp file that I cannot delete. And around the same time my anti-virus software has detected win32 trojans and virtumonde with increasing frequency. It seems that everytime I think I have rid my system of one, I find it pops up again a few days later often in a different location.

Until I stumbled on this site I was just resolved to format my hard drive and reinstall windows. As this will be a major pain, I would rather not resort to that option if at all possible.

I read the walkthrough and I believe I have taken all the appropriate steps before I posted here but my problems still persist.

I have attached all the necessary logs. Please let me know if any additional information is required or if I need to redo any of the previous steps.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You should read this sticky thread Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!! to see what effect this had on your waiting time.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O23 - Service: Roger Wilco Base Station - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Roger Wilco\rwbs\rwbs.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Sorry about the bumping. Read the sticky and I understand the situation now.

I ran MGtools and fixed the yahoo toolbar but I did not see MSMSGS or Roger Wilco Base Station listed. I ran virus scans and used a registry cleaner while I was waiting last night. Not sure if that would make a difference but I thought I would mention it in the sake of full disclosure.

I did receive a success message when I ran Combofix and I have attached the new Combofix log and MGlogs for your perusal.

My system seems to be running faster. I am pretty sure I noticed a performance improvement as early as last night. Avast did pick up a win32 trojan again while scanning this morning. I will let you know if anything pops up again after this fix.

My only remaining problem is difficulty installing new programs from my dvd drive. I thought it may be related to the malware problem since they both happened at roughly same time. Now I am not so sure.

As a test I just tried to install two of the games that had previously given me problems. Both crashed during install. Not sure it means anything to you (it is all Greek to me) but below are each of the error messages I got when install shield crashed.

    Civilization 4 Gold
    Error Code: -5011 : 0x8000ffff

    Medieval II Total War
    Error Code: -5009 : 0x80040702

Both disk are in pristine condition. Is it possible for malware to interfere with my ability to install new programs, or is this more likely a installshield or hardware issue? I just find it very coincidental that these problems popped up right around the same time that I had a major malware attack, but then again what do I know.

In any case, thank you for all the help so far and if you do have any further advice I would be much obliged.

I suggest that you post in the Software or Gaming Forum about this. It is not a malware issue. Perhaps try shutting down Avast before installing.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
