Boy, did I learn another computer lesson today. :cry Don't delete a download of a program that works and replace it with a BETA later version. I had wiped ClipDiary v1.4 and replaced it with a later BETA version. The latest version sux, IMO, (i have told them so) and I had to track down the old version in a Backup to restore it, install it and use it. Wasted a couple of hours.

A bit OT, but just wanted to let you know bazza--I am officially lovin' SlickRun.

Finally got around to giving it more than a two minute tryout and individualized some MagicWords. It's great! Simple and very powerful. Finding the Windows key +Q combination to enter input mode was the secret for me--I can avoid the need to mouse over to enter a Magic Word.

--Want to hear a favorite song?...type a Magicword and it starts in my player of choice. --Need to use an infrequent program whose icon would clutter up my desktop?...type a few letters and it opens--no searching through the Start menu folders. I really like it. I am already backing up my keywords-file to keep in a safe place should I do a reinstall of Windows.

Thanks for doggedly recommending this software.

Glad you like it. My Favourite program. I absolutely hate using PC's without it installed. It saves so much time and mousing. I have 100+ MagicWords. I can't remember them all but it is easy to look them up, to jog my memory.

OP gets me Opera, IE = Internet Explorer, IT + iTunes, X = Excel, etc. So much faster. Upper or lower case doesn't matter. Thanks for pointing out Windows key + Q, I didn't know that. :-D Damn, it doesn't work for me in XP Pro.

Please note, SlickRun is not a "hotkey" program. If you want a program that lets you press some wacky keyboard shortcut (say, Shift + Win + 1) to run to something, you'll want to find a different utility. SlickRun is designed to be far more intuitive than "hotkey" programs-- You shouldn't have to keep an awkward mental list of hotkeys for launching your favorite programs. Instead, just type whatever's most natural for you to remember; with auto-completion, you'll rarely type more than 2 or 3 characters anyway. Studies have shown that user-defined imperative words are much easier to recall than arbitrary characters like keystrokes.

I value my MagicWords so much that I make 3 copies. One is in My Documents, one is in another Folder and the third copy is on an External drive every time I add or amend the master file.

Hmmm, I use Win MCE (which is basically Pro +MC) and it works fine. Are you sure you're using the Windows key and not ALT by habit? I did that a few times before realizing my mistake.

Definitely using the Windows Key + Q :cry All it does is move my SlickRun (input) box from its' current position to somewhere else. I won't be using that key combo any more in XP Pro SP3. Bazza

Tip # 88 Using Explorer
Instead of clicking on the up-one-level icon, when using Windows Explorer (in the left hand column) , you can press the Backspace key instead, or back arrow key.

You can keep pressing the back arrow to keep going back, as well, no matter how many levels down you are..

I personally find passphrases as easy to remember as passwords and safer if you use numeric "1"'s and "0"'s in place of Alpha "I"'s and "O"'s.
For example (Aussie Cricketer) Brett Lee Is The Fastest Bowler In The World IMHO---BLITFBITWIMHO without letter substitution,
becomes BL1TFB1TW1MH0 and easy to remember if cricket is your sport.

For UK and USA readers of this, substitute your favourite football palyer, or basketball player, musician, or golfer, or whoever.

We all know about Microsoft updates and the fact that we should keep them up to date, but how about our other programs like CCleaner, Spybot S&D, etc.

When you access most third party programs, they MAY tell you that your program needs updating.

2 other ways to be advised of updates is to use
Update Star at http://www.updatestar.com/

or SUMo at http://www.majorgeeks.com/SUMo_d5824.html

They both search your computer and provide a list of appropriate updates that are available. They will also help you to some degree, to find that update on the Net.

Maybe you should use both to hopefully pick up links that the other may miss.

Tip # 94 Backing up NTFS data to a FAT 32 hard drive.

Make sure you don't attempt this. It will work, but any file over 4 gigs in size will be split into multiples of 4 gigs. I was reminded of this when I attempted to use Acronis True Image v11 to do a FULL Backup of my C: drive (NTFS) to E: drive (FAT32). I ended up with 6+ 4 gig files. I thought, at first, that I must have exceeded A.T.I. v11 defaults.

It wasn't until re-reading an old PC mag that I was reminded of FAT32 file size limitations.

Most (all?) external hard drives (or any additional hard drive, for that matter, will probably be formatted to FAT32). Make sure that you format any drive to NTFS if your major drive (C is NTFS, to bypass this happening.

It raised an interesting question for me. When I validated that previous backup, I clicked on the first FAT32 4gig file to validate. Did it validate all the others without me asking? I assume / hope it did.

It is all a bit academic now, as my FAT32 hard drive is now NTFS.
