I'm starting to notice that you tend to post the general rules when most folks ask for help. Maybe this isn't the right place for me, but the thing is, I remember I came here before and was helped greatly.

Anyway, here's my situation. I don't have time to do every little step in that guide. I'm a student trying to fix my computer because I need it fixed by tonight.

    I have:
the anti virus 360 browser redirect virus.
    lsass.exe
    pmnmjGXp.dll

    I need help SOON.

Welcome ... back I assume based on your message!

Yes and you need to follow them since you know about them and because you want help urgently. Everyone wants help urgently. Please follow the info already posted in the sticky threads and you would be well on the way to resolving your problems.

Make sure you read this sticky too: Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!which explains how we work in oldest to newest order. It does not matter who you are or how urgent. I violated the rules just posting this message.

Why are you using a new user account if you have already been here before.

Running the guide is your best bet. Skipping steps may only cause the problem not to be fixed.

Computer reboot while SAS was deleted malware

I couldn't find the other thread I made so I just made a new one. The title basically says it all. I don't want to scan all over again...does SAS save the old malware it found from the last scan?

Re: Computer reboot while SAS was deleted malware

Oh shucks. It should says "while SAS was deleting malware".

Sorry, but this thread made it half way down page four. I have to bump it. It's been a while.

    What should I do?

And just think of the time you have wasted by not doing the instructions and starting new threads :(

No one can help you unless you do as we ask so we can see what is happening in your system.

Would just the SAS log be sufficient?

    No .....still wasting time. :(

NORMAL!!!!!! You need to wait your turn in the queue as bumping delays getting an answer for an even longer time frame. If you keep bumping you will never get an answer. I already explained this to you in message # 2. You are lucky that we even responded to these bumps which we should not be doing and will not anymore.

Quite simple....the cleaning procedure given in the stickies. Here it is all spelled out for you. I suggest that you complete these instructions and do not post again until you have the logs to attach to avoid more bumping.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Alright, I just did scans with the recommended programs and I''m pretty sure they got rid of the viruses. But I want to make sure...

I can't get the Malware bytes program to work. It says it's performed an illegal operation. I'm trying to fix that, but meanwhile, I'm hoping you can figure out if there's anything wrong with my system with these two logs.

Please complete the procedure you were given in message # 10. We cannot answerer your question about being clean by seeing only one of the requested logs.

The FixIEDef log is of no use to us and did not even need to run it since we never asked you to and you did not have the infection even mentioned in the title of the sticky.

  14. endlesst0m

    endlesst0m Private E-2

I want to post all the logs you're asking me to post, but I can't get MalewareBytes to install. It says the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal operation. I made sure I renamed it mb.exe but I still have this problem

Also, I just wanted to make sure you guys are aware I posted my SAS log in this thread already. Don't miss it!

Did you read message number 10??? Let me quote from it
Also please give full and exact word for word error messages. Do not paraphrase.

Also let me repeat again. We cannot tell you if you are clean by look at only a log from SUPERAntiSpyware.

  16. endlesst0m

    endlesst0m Private E-2

    Ok, so here it goes...

The Combofix and MSlogs logs are attached in this post. The SAS log is in another post in this thread. I cannot get Malware bytes to work. You told not to paraphrase but that's exactly what it said. What should my next step be?

Probably not. It may have said "illegal instruction" not "illegal operation". And it normally has some processor registry info and hex code to go along with it. Something like below would be an example :

Now uinstall all of the below as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
    Viewpoint Media Player

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now goto this link Using MGtools and download the new version of MGtools.exe using the black bold print link in the first sentence.

Run MGtools.exe then attach the below logs:C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I've been putting this off, but I have a few questions...

-First of all, WordPad is the same as Notepad, right?
-Second of all, I have two icons on my desktop that seem to pertain to this but I'm not sure which one to use. I have one icon called FixIEDef, and another that just says "Combofix". Do I drag the lod to the one that says ComboFix
-Also, you say not to "Run" the program, but that's what it asks me when I drag the icon onto it.

Ah, well I hope this bump doesn't hurt me too bad but I figured I might as well go with what I have even though I'm not sure. My machine is still having some problems. See attached...

Absolutely not!!!! if we wanted you to use Wordpad, we would have said use Wordpad. Please follow the instructions as written. You must use notepad. This is why things are not working. The CFScript.txt file you created is not valid for ComboFix.

Again I repeast that you need to follow instructions. I did not say anything about FixIEDef and the READ & RUN ME did not ask you to download this. It has nothing to do with what we are doing. You need to keep track of what you are downloading and know the difference between each program.

Again, please read what it states. The first bullet item is just telling to verify that you have ComboFix on your Desktop and we are telling you that we do not want you to run it by double clicking on it. We just want you to make sure that it is on your Desktop before you continue on with the next steps.

Please complete 100% of the instructions in message # 17 before you post again and make sure you follow all instructions as written. Attach both requested logs when you finish.

Problem: When I drag the Notepad file onto ComboFix, it says Current date is 2008-12-29. ComboFix has expired. Click YES to run in REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY mode. Click No to exit.

Delete the current version of ComboFix.exe on your Desktop. Then download a new version of ComboFix from the link in the READ & RUN ME and save to your Desktop. Now try the procedure.

Ugh, more problems. I dragged the log onto ComboFix. I didn't name it CFscript,(i forgot to this time) but it prompted me and said "CFscript is misspelled. Are you trying to run CFscript?" so I click yes and it starts to run. Then it closes out of nowhere. I try to run it again, but this time it tells me AVG, another anti virus program I had, must be closed. I've actually been trying to uninstall it but I can't. It says Error: actions failed for registry key hklmsoftware.miscrosoft/windowsNT/current version.windows:creating a registry key... Error 0x80070005.

Great. So I did a search for the problem I'm having and saw that "Revo" might be helpful. So using Revo, I uninstall AVG, or so I thought, and then I restart my computer as instructed. After restarting, combo fix STILL claimed AVG was running! So I just said the hell with it and ran the program anyway. It did some kind of scan, and then restarted out of nowhere. I have no idea why and nothing became of it. I really don't know what to do next.

At this point I need to reemphasize a point stated in the beginning of the READ & RUN ME. The below is a direct quote:
The more you do on your own the more you confuse the situation and the harder you make it for us to help you. At this point I have no idea what you have been doing on your own. And since you are having problems following instructions properly, you keep having problems with the procedures.

I will try one more time using a different tool to get thru this, but you must follow instructions and you must not do anything but what we ask you do do.

I going to assume you already uninstall all the programs I asked you to uninstall and will begin this new fix from the ComboFix point.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now goto this link Using MGtools and download the new version of MGtools.exe from the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  27. endlesst0m

    endlesst0m Private E-2

    It says:

Cannot import C:/Documents and Settings/Owner/Desktop/fixme.reg: Error accessing the registry.

Sorry for not following all the directions. I've just been so frustrated by problems that keep coming up (like this one) with every little step I try to follow. Thanks for your patience.

Based on your logs, it is not malware since your logs are clean. Perhaps you should try shutting down AVG8 and see what happens.

But I will give you a couple more scans to run just to double check for more possible hidden malware.

    Go here and download SysClean:

    http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

You will need to download two additional files, one for viruses and the other for spyware. Instructions for which ones to download are found here:

    http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt

After running SysClean, attach the log from it.

Now run this Running GMER to detect rootkits and attach the GMER log.

Also please run this Trend Micro RootkitBusterand see if you can get us a log from it too.

Here's the logs. My computer is running so much faster, but still, for some reason about 1/4 of the pictures on any given Myspace page won't load. I can't figure out why. I did get a warning about low memory on my computer a few times, but that was before I did all these scans. Could that have something to do with it?

Just get to my most recent logs whenever you get a chance. You don't even have to bother posting again unless there is a problem.

As for the Myspace bug, I was able to fix the problem by uninstalling Firefox along with the custom user settings, and then reinstalling it.

  33. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Your logs were all clean as suspected. I'm happy to hear you fixed your problem. Also happy to see it was not malware as I also indicated that. ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
