I believe my daughter's pc has a virus but cannot identify. She lives in an apartment at College in VA. Internet Service Provider apparently put pc through several diagnostics and could not fix and concluded it was a virus that he could not identify. Not that quantity is indicator but apparently put at least 2 hours into trying to fix. Uses Symantec which is downloaded throught the school. She is running Vista Home edition.

I now have PC in possesion and determined it is communicating with internet but will not display website. Super Tech friend went through machine and concluded this via Command Prompt testing which revealed that IP addresses are being communicated to pc from various (requested) websites. Do not have Firefox to try but friend used a method to communicate that is very basic through command prompt and concluded same symptom.

Same problem for wireless and ethernet connection. Thoughts on where to start or what I might have?

    Thanks as always.

While waiting for review of logs, snooped around microsoft website and went to microsoft answers. Found out there was a cumulative update for Windows Explorer 7 on 4/16/09 KB963027 that cause some computers not to be able to display web pages. That would be ME! This seems pretty important and surprised it was so difficult to detect/find out. I will save the part about me driving 10 hours and countless time spent trying to fix.:cry.

Hope this might help someone else with same problem.

AS always, thanks to Major Geeks.

Later loaded Firefox which wasn't working so figured still had a problem. Ended up unistalling Symantec and voila, both Firefox and IE7 worked. Interestingly, re-installed symantec and Firefox and IE7 continued working. JUST in case someone out there has similar problem.

Just an FYI for future reference! Everytime you make a post, you cause a bump!Whether you intend to or not, the effect is still the same. You should read this sticky thread which is posted in the forum and in the READ & RUN ME that will explain why it took so long to get an answer.

Your logs are all clean. You problems are not malware. I suggest that you post in the Software Forum if you have any further porblems. But my first suggestion on where to start would have been to completely uninstall Symantec and then reboot and see where things stand. Since you have now done this, and all is good, it is a moot point. The reason I would have suggested this as a first step is that we have seen this problem from Symantec dozens of times.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Had not idea I was bumping and will not do again. If relevant info is made available prior to a response from MG, I guess it is best to leave alone? Is it possible to "amend" original post. In my situation, resolution to problem took a significant turn. I had a very short window before returning PC to daughter in college so still tried to problem solve myself.

As always, thanks for being such a great resource!!!

Yes unless you don't care about having additional delays. Any additional info can be added after we respond.

Only for 5 minutes and then a post cannot be changed.

    You're welcome. Surf safely.
