    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, trying to get rid of what I think is a CoolWebSearch issue.
I followed your 'Read Me' instructions and have attached 4 of the 5 logs to this post. (Hope I did that part right. My computer knowledge can fit on my thumbnail, but I can follow directions!) I have constant error.99fh popups, and the browser bar at the bottom of the screen titles them "try find again." I couldn't get my virus software to disable or uninstall before I ran the five scans you suggested, but otherwise they seemed to run as you said they would. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to MajorGeeks, vande2.

A couple of things I need before starting --- please attach the the RRlog.txt from running the RootRepeal.zip application. I also need to have the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log.
    • Be patient after posting your logs and wait for one of the helpers to get to you. It can take a while to read thru all of the logs and to create individual fixes for you.
    • Also DO NOT BUMP your thread to try and get a faster answer. This will actually significantly delay getting an answer. See this: Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!
    • Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Here are the logs you requested.

    *Edit*
The root repeal log did not attach to this reply, and when I tried to attach it to a new post, got a message that I've already attached it in this thread. It is in my first post.

    Hello, vande2

The below fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for issue(s) on this machine. Also, please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.

I strongly recommend that you clean up your Desktop immediately leaving only links. [ C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop ]Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

*You need run MSconfig and put your PC into normal startup mode as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME.

An observation: I would suggest that you increase your installed RAM.

Total Physical Memory ------- 640.00 MB
Available Physical Memory -- 177.29 MB

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and proceed
    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix to remove some malware.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Running HostXpert to Reset Default Hosts File

    Step 5:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 6:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • C:\combofix.txt

Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

Attached are the two logs you requested.

I removed junk from the desktop, ran MSconfig--> normal startup mode.
Followed Steps 1, 2 and 3, then reactivated AVG Free and Firewall. The only issue I had was in Step 4; there was no "Make Writeable?" button, only "Make ReadOnly?". Skipped this and went on to click Restore Microsofts Hosts File, and continued with no problems.

So far, no popups. One question I had was about running in Normal Startup Mode--do I need to go back and un-do this, or will it have been done during one of the other steps?

Thank you so much for your help, and for making it easy to understand!

I just fixed this. The procedure was out of date with how the program currently works.

NO!!! You need to re-read what step 1 of the READ & RUN ME gave you:
dr.m will continue with you when he returns.

I don't know a darn thing about MSconfig, and this is the first time I've had to do anything with it. I seriously have a lot to learn!

I've been online now for a while since the fix, and so far the only thing I've encountered are a few advertisement pop-ups.

    Hello, vande2

Just a couple things more to do:

Comment: Your available RAM has increased --- but you still need to increase your physical RAM to atleast 1gb for better performance.

    Step 1:
Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix again.

Attached are the most recent logs. No problems following the latest steps that I know of, but I was in and out all day and didn't sit down and do it all at once.
Seems like the problems I was aware of are gone, but I'm sure there were some I wasn't aware of.

Thanks for your continued help and patience!

I thought I got rid of Cyberdefender a while back. If it is still installed, I can't find it anywhere, and their site has no record of my account any longer.

Will wait to follow your newest instructions until I hear back.

    Please follow my last instructions.

These references to CyberDefender appear in your most recent logs.
    • Uninstall Programs List - MyIdentityDefender Toolbar (CyberDefender Corporation)
    • HJT Log dated 7-24
    • GetUnkey.txt Log
    • ComboFix .txt - ((((( Reg Loading Points )))))

    dr.m
PS: Noting the above for removal if you wish to.

My intention was to remove Cyberdefender when I installed AVG Free so as not to have too much anti-virus software at once. I thought I had done this, but if there are parts of Cyberdefender remaining, let's remove them.
