Total Security Virus?

I have a program on my pc that runs immediately when I start it and tells me I have X amount of viruses and changes my background to a blue screen with a bunch of writing that I have a virus.

It wouldn't even let me run Norton at first, so I stopped it through msconfig. It's still there and Norton won't pick it up.

I tried brute force uninstaller, because I saw it through the CCleaner uninstall, but it wouldn't let me do it through either.

Finally, I tried Hijackthis, but that won't even start either.

Anyone know if this virus and a good way to get rid of it? I've had luck with norton before, but I've done 4 full system scans and it's still there.

    Any help is appreciated :)

I was able to get the background gone to stop showing up and the program to stop running, pc is still slow and norton keeps finding 1 virus every scan I do. It says it fixes it but there's still issues.

I tried running hijackthis.exe but it won't run, I've even tried reinstalling it and running it in safe mode. Also, regedit command won't work either. Why could these be?

Let me know the exact file it's finding and it's file path.

Were you able to complete any of the below which I shall link to for reference?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Let me know about running:
    • SUPERantispyware
    • Malware Bytes
    • Combofix
    • MGTools.exe

As I would like to see logs from each. If something does not run, make a note of it and continue on with the next step(s).

    Thanks
    Kes13!

    Hi pfairclough,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

Which Norton product and version do you have installed and what version of Windows are you using? Please respond back and let me know.

It could be that the infected files are residing in one of your system restore points. The "Total Security" threat is a misleading application. Please follow the instructions in the link below to properly configure Norton and to scan for infections.

    Remove Total Security threat

Let me know how you make out.

    Thank you,
    Mike
