:confused I was on the internet (IE) and some program came on with a warning that I needed anti-virus. (I thought I had anti-virus). It appears to com from Microsoft and its "scan" in like 2 minutes and tells me I have all kinds of malware and viruses and trojan horses in every area on my computer. It wants me to download some anti- virus program to clean them all out. The identifying address is www.001antivirus.com. Is this legit? I just recently signed unto Facebook and I use you tube alot.
Should I download this program next time? Does Micro-soft do this? Can I trust it?My computer is running slow and I noticed that my files under "my pictures" are blank when I open the, yet say they contain 576KB or 48 Kb But I can't see anything when I open them. Is that the sign I do have a trojan that is deleting all my precious phots from my albums of grandkids baptisms, Christmas 2003, vacation 2006 etc??? Please help???

I recommend that you stay away from FaceBook. Also you need to do the below.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

What about just downloading the antivirus software that the announcment sugests to clean out the malware? Is there anyway to tell if something is really from Microsoft? Is this(apparant anti-virus scanning) program part of IE-8? Why is facebook not a good idea?

If you do this, you will be installing the malware making things even worse.

Microsoft does not come out and use scare tactics like this.

Because so many people get infected by using FaceBook. We see many cases per month and in the month of October I had to clean 5 PCs of friends who got infected while using FaceBook. One of them said it is the first time they ever went there and just tried to view some photos another friend was posting. Last year and early this year thousands of people were infected with KoobFace (Koob ir booK backwards so it is a play on FaceBook). There are new versions also designed to get MySpace and Twitter users infected. See this to read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koobface

I printed out you advice (directions) for removing the malwareand read the connecting articles. I have to tell you I am Mensa eligible and I absolutely cannot understand the directions. But thank you for your advice. If I purscahed an anti-virus program disc in a store (Trendmicro, Norton or AVG), would that work as well?

Likely you would be wasting your money since they will not find or fix all potential problems like the cleaning process will. And you can just use AVG for free so do not purchase anything. Use either AVG, Avast or Avira (only one) if you do not already have an antivirus. If you do have an antivirus program installed, you MUST uninstall it before any other one is installed.
