Im doing the vista cleaning proceduer on my Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 (running Vista Home Premium) and after the combofix did it's thing I cant get my internet connection back. The network diagnostics tell me that:
"The network adapter "Realteck RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)" is experiencing driver or hardware related issues."
When I checked it in the device manager it said that adapter was fine but when I checked "Realteck RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) Winpkfilter Miniport" - under Device Status it says: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19)."
In fact all of the adapters (hope thats right name) that end with WinpkFilter Miniport have that code 19 error.
I also did not notice until AFTER Combofix was finished that there was an icon on my taskbar which says that my last backup didn't work and no I dont have the disk. I'm going to attach the two report logs I have, one for SAS and one for combofix. I cannot find the one for MAM in fact all I can find is the mb-setup.exe (changed the name as told to) and I KNOW I ran this.
Hope I'm doing THIS right and that I have given you all the info you need to help me.

    Hello, icsmile

Malwarebytes' log would be located here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\insert your user account name\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\

Please attach the remaining requested logs:
    • RRlog.txt (from RootRepeal)
    • ComboFix.txt (normally C:\ComboFix.txt)
    • MGlogs.zip - normally it is C:\MGlogs.zip - only attach this log from MGtools.exe DO NOT attach any logs seen in the MGtools folder.

You should attach all of your logs to one message after you have completed all scans.
    • Be patient after posting your logs and wait for one of the helpers to get to you. It can take a while to read thru all of the logs and to create individual fixes for you.
    • Also DO NOT BUMP your thread to try and get a faster answer. This will actually significantly delay getting an answer. See this: Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!
    * Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Sorry, I bet I should have also told you that my hard drive is split. I has Vista(C) and Irene (I).
Also I can't get in to the "documents and settings" on C. I AM administrator so I should be able to get in to everything and until now have been able to. Now there are several files including "documents and settings", "program data" and "application data" that appear faded, have a little white box with a blue arrow on them and I can't get in to them.
I also don't understand... because I followed your instrutions step by step but I don't have RRlog.txt and can't find Rootrepeal anywhere.
So here is the other log. Sure hope we can figure this out.

Can you also tell me how I can get or fix the drivers I need so I can get back on the internet, I dont always have access to this other computer. Or is that a bad idea right now?

Actually this is incorrect since Vista is being used. The correct location for Vista is:

    C:\Users\insert your user account name\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs

According to your MGlogs.zip file, you never installed Malwarebytes. So no log will obviously exist until you run it.

Actually you are not allowed to acces the \Documents and Settings folder on Vista so you have never accessed this before. It does not matter if you are an administrator. You still cannot access this folder.

Wow, I really thought I downloaded the Malwarebites. So. now what? Can my computer be fixed or did I screw it up beyond repair? Can you walk me through what I need to do to get the drivers I need to get back on line or what should I do?

Let's try to repair your network connection.

Download and save the below Restore.bat file to your Desktop to make it easy to find. Then double click on it to run it.

    Restore.bat

After running it, a new log should created named C:\MGBU.zip file. Please attach this new zip file. Then reboot your PC.

After reboot, download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGBU.zip if not already attached
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I really appreciate your patience and time in helping me fix my computer. Before I go any further however will you please note that it is my laptop that is screwed up and I am borrowing a pc to be able to get instructions from you. Could you please be more specific on HOW I am supposed to do the things you listed I should do. I saved the restore.bat file to a disk to be able to transfer it over to my laptop. Is this correct? I am sorry for being such an idiot but since I have screwed everything up so far I want to be sure I am doing it right from here on out.

Yes save the Restore.bat and the new MGtools.exe to a flashdrive, CD, or whatever you meant by "disk" and then properly copy them onto the problem PC. DO NOT run them from this "disk"!

You must copy Restore.bat to your Desktop and MGtools.exe must be copied to the root folder of your C drive ( C:\MGtools.exe ).

    Then you can run them.

Ok I hope I did this right. My computer seems to be ok except for no internet connection. I also have 8 unknown files on my desktop they look faded - are they temporary files?

Reboot your PC into safe boot mode and run the fix from message # 8 again. Then reboot in normal mode and see if there is any change.

Also see this if you still have no connection: Proxy Server - Changing Settings

You may have to reinstall drivers for your Network Card if there is no change.

Temp files on your Desktop have nothing to do with malware. You put them there while editing Word Docs or similar. Some have been there since May 18, 2009. Delete what you don't need.

Ok, I rebooted in to safe mode. When you say "run the fix from message #8" I assumed you mean to click on the "restore.bat", which I did and it didn't make any difference. Still not connecting to internet. I also checked for a proxy server and it shows none.
I also checked the "system restore" and it shows a "System: scheduled checkpoint" at a date and time that are before I started doing this malware cleanup and having problems connecting. I also removed some programs and they are listed there too. Can I use one of these?
Also those temp files on my desktop all tell me I will be deleting a system file. Are you sure its safe to delete them?

You can try this or try re-installing the drivers for your network card.

They are not system files. You can delete them if you don't need them yourself. Either way not a malware problem.
