Require Diagnosis: Virut or not?

    Hi there. I have yet to do a clean sweep of my system using MajorGeeks' preliminary guide because I think my machine may have a Virut infection.

    As such, I'm told by all sources that the best course of action is to do a format and reinstall. But if I do that, I have to get rid of all my executables and script files. I'd rather not have to do this, so before I do anything I want to know if a Virut infection has really corrupted the executable files.

    Of course there have been slowdowns, my taskbar style has changed, and my sound won't work. Also, whenever my browser tries to generate popups, I get errors.

    Aside from that, there's a mysterious "16A.tmp" process in my task manager.

    I'm not sure if a HijackThis file is enough to diagnose the problem. If you need more, please inform me.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    All right. I wanted to avoid going though the whole read me process and just get a diagnosis, but it turned out to be a moot point anyway since the next time I turned on my computer, the "Security Tool" virus had hijacked my desktop.

    So I went through the laundry list and saved the logs.

    While I have no more apparent problems, I'd still like to know if there was a Virut infection on my machine.

    Why am I not seeing any AV protection on this system?

    You do not have a virut infection, but there are a few things to clean up.

    Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive C by "ticking" the box for drive C and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\fla10.tmp
    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

    Now please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

    Download Mirror #1

    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it. (If you are using Vista, please right-click and select run as administartor)
    • A blank Windows shall open with the title "SystemLook v1.0-by Jpshortstuff".
    • Copy and Paste the content of the following codebox into the main textfield under "File":

    Code:
    :filefind
    wscntfy

    • Please Confirm everything is copied and Pasted as I have provided above
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. You can close this notepad window as the log will already be saved as SystemLook.txt on your Desktop ( if you downloaded and ran SystemLook to your Desktop as requested ).
    • Please attach this log in your next reply.

    Note: The scan may take a while from several seconds to a minute or more depending on the number of files you have and how fast your computer can perform the task.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    hhdaudbu
    File::
    c:\docume~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\hhdaudbu.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * SystemLook log.
    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Because there is none.

    That file did not show up in the scan.

    Everything seems to be working fine now.

    Then I suggest you download and install and AV program right away. Your system is showing a possible MBR infection, so please do this:

    Please run this: GMER - running with a random name and attach the log from GMER.

    Looks like GMER did not run properly. Lets have you do this:
    Download Rootkit Unhooker from HERE.
    Save it to your desktop.
    Now double-click to run RootkitUnhooker.
    Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
    Select the pages Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. Click OK.
    Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
    Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
    Attach the report to your next reply.

    That didnt find it either. Are you sure all disc emulation software is off? If it isn't, Combo could be reporting a FP.

    Let's see what this reports:

    • Please download maxlook , saving the file to your desktop.
    • Double click maxlook.exe to run it. Note - you must run it only once!
    • As instructed when the tool runs, restart the computer and logon to the Recovery Console.
    • This will require you to change the boot order in the bios to the cd drive as first and then boot with the xp disc in the drive inorder to go into the RC.
    • Execute the following bolded command at the C:\windows> prompt. Refer to the snapshot to see how it will look. Double click the thumbnail to enlarge it.

      batch look.bat

    http://noahdfear.net/WTT/lookXP.gif

    • You will see 1 file copied many times then return to the x:\windows> prompt.
    • Type Exit to restart your computer then logon in normal mode.
    • Click Start >> Run and then type the following in the run box ( note the space before the - sign )

      maxlook -sig
    • It will produce looklog.txt on the desktop and open it.
    • Please attach the log to your next message.

    Oh. I forgot about the emulation software.

    I re-enabled Daemon Tools right after I finished the readme.

    I apologize for that. I'll disable it and run the scans again.

    You need to make sure that you have run Defogger to disable disk emulation as requested in the Read & RUN ME again and leave disk emulation disabled until your system has been cleaned.

    Now you need to run MaxLook as TimW requested.

    I made sure to disable it. Here's the log.

    Okay that looks clean. It appears that the detection of an MBR infection was due to Daemon Tools.

    Are you having any malware problems? If not, then continue on with the below.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
