My boyfriend tried to remover a firewall following the directions in the tread attached. The last step he followed was the Run command Del. Now the computer will cut on but the image on the monitor keeps going out. The monitor is good and works just fine but it won't stay on as if it is not getting info from the computer. Any advice?

Here's the link to the thread he used to attempt to remove the firewall:

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

:confused The "link" you posted is to a file on your PC and there is no way we can access it. If you have a thread already started here at Major Geeks, please post that thread's link, it will start with "http". However, overall, your post is not very clear, and from what I can tell, this is the problem: you had a firewall program installed; you had problems removing it so you (or your boyfriend) followed some steps in a thread (was it here at Major Geeks?) to remove it since normal removal steps didn't work; at some point, the del command was used, and now there is no picture on the monitor. Is this right?

First, we will need you to provide a better, more clear description of the EXACT problem, and the EXACT things that were done including the name of the firewall program, the version of Windows you have (XP, Vista, Seven, etc), and the true link to the thread you used..... thanks!

    Hey guys,
I'm running windows xp home edition sp3. Im needing to disable my firewall to access some games. I went to control panel and was able to disable the windows firewall. However, I apparently still have an old version of a defender pro firewall that cant be uninstalled. To remedy this I followed the suggestions of this thread:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=98971

I followed directions up to post #11 by thefool then I went to bed.
Before I go any further, I now realize I didn't follow the post to the T and in my ignorance it seems I stepped in over my head. The next morning when I woke and turned computer on the monitor wouldn't turn on. It's like the monitor isn't being activated by computer but when I turn off and on the power switch to the monitor it will come on for about a second and display the wallpaper then turn back off. So, I can still do things on the computer I just have to constantly turn the monitor off and on in 1.5 second increments. Any ideas?:confused

P.S. This is my second response the thread. I didn't see my first reply apologies if this posts a second time.

    • Can you boot into 'Safe Mode'?
    • Can you boot into 'Last Known Good Configuration'?
To get into Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration, tap the F8 key repeatedly after you turn the computer on, until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu, then select either Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration.

I can boot up into safe mode but it does nothing any different to my screen. I still have to press the power button on and off to see my wallpaper. Ideas.....?

Thanks for the link, I ran it the Defender Pro firewall wasn't detected for me to delete it. Anyone know how I can uninstall this firewall? I can't find file location or anything.......

Secondly, In response to Dr Moriarty's post I downloaded AppRemover from gf's laptop and was gonna usb it to my broken pc's desktop to save myself some time with the 1 second increment crap. When I turned it on. tHE SCREEN STAYED ON AND IS STILL ON! Now I'm wandering if someone has done something to my pc. When I was trying to get some "stuff" done to play a pc game. I was trying to novicely forward some of my ports. Then, the whole thing with the firewall happened. My question now is: could someone have done anything when I attempted to open those ports?

Can you try downloading revo unistaller to see if that picks up the firewall you trying to delete and this will also clear up your registry and also give ccleaner a try and so if that helps you.

Both programs can be downloaded from here majorgeeks

    hope this helps

Wow, I love the feel of aesthetics of that Revo Uninstaller. That's a nice tool to have but unfortunately, it didn't pick up the bleeping firewall. Anything else......

Give ccleaner a try now and see if that will clean up the firewall files and clean the registry of your computer.

Are you sure you tried tapping F8 and clicking on last known good configuration?
Do you have a system backup?
Do you have your operating system and drivers discs for a format and reinstall?

I would consider installing Trend Micro HijackThis from here at MG or other suitable site, and let it do the heavy lifting for you. I've seldom encountered a file or NT Service it can't safely remove. If you try it and the firewall remains on the pc perhaps dlb Major Geek can get you back on track. Give it a shot. Afterwards you can easily uninstall HiJackThis if you wish.

Yea i tried last know configuration there was no change, I do have a backup but I didn't backup files til after I installed DP firewall (3 years ago), and Unfortunately, I can't find OS disc. It seems like such an easy problem but little things like these make it quite aggravating.

thanks triton I'll do that right now.

Ok, I ran "system scan with log file" there was only one instance even related to Defender Pro and it wasn't the firewall. It was an anonymous surfing utility. I deleted it. After deleting that there are no signs of DP or Kaspersky processes anywhere? I also looked in config>misc tools>Open process manager and found nothing. How is the firewall running without a process being detected?

Triton: "dlb Major Geek" what's this?

'dlb' is the user name of the first person who responded to your thread, one of the Major Geeks pros. If you're satisfied there was no instance of a process or type 023 NT Service in the HiJackThis scan relating to the rogue firewall, ok. I assume you've checked the Windows directory and can't find where the firewall resides or resided, and if you're familiar with the Windows registry you didn't find a key located in HKCU or HKLM in the 'software' key lists, and also no reference to it in administrative tools/services. A service typically has to be stopped before deletion.

Also check Windows security center in control panel for confirmation on the running firewall.

Yea, no "O 23 NT", nothing in either HKCU or HKLM, and didn't see anything in administrative tools>services>standard/extended. There was also nothing found in admin tools> computer management> system tools> event viewer> security. You're right I can't find the location of the firewall. The only thing related to the DP firewall I've seen has been the alert in Security Center telling me Defender Pro firewall is turned on. Other than that, I haven't seen anything.

If Windows security center says its turned on it's definitely running. Can you associate any other trade, proprietary, or vendor name with this firewall? Could such a name appear in add/remove programs, services, Program Files, or in that HiJackThis scan log? Can you return to or find a download source for this firewall? Oft times removal instructions can be found under FAQ's etc. Try to find the author's name for the firewall, if it's a legit application and it's protecting your pc, it has to reside somewhere on the pc. Stay on it.

Yea it's still running. Just tried to post a print scree pic but I cant get the file size below 97kb for some reason :confused but it is still on. However, the Windows Firewall is disabled permanently until I know this one is disabled.

Did a search on Defender Pro firewall and it seems to be of Kaspersky origin. Check for Kaspersky software on the pc and see if it contains the firewall service and files. If so you might attack the issue by removing Kaspersky and picking another suitable firewall. If the Kaspersky program also runs your antivirus, try another A/V too unless you can or want to run a stand alone Kaspersky A/V if one is available. You can also search Defender Pro and decide from there.

Wow, what help tech support was. Absolutely ineffective I didn't think I still had the installation disks but i found em. I'm gonna install again, then, uninstall. We'll see what happens.

I looked for Kaspersky under HKLM and HKCU and found nothing. I'm hoping re-installing and uninstalling will help. Outside of that, there's nothing. Tech support said the patch I previously posted is nothing more than removing the keys in HKLM and HKCU. :(

Ok, I'm absolutely depleted of all ideas. The re-install and re-uninstallation didn't work In fact, It froze on re-start all three times. I booted up in Last Known Config. I couldn't run anything it froze up just the same as Normal Mode. I rebooted in Safe Mode and ran Revo Uninstaller and Reg Organizer. I removed the newly installed Defender Pro Utilities and now, here I am. Nothing different firewall won't remove or disable. Even better, installation location is unknown. Hypothetically speaking, could the Security Center give a false-positive for an enabled firewall? Anyone got anything.....?

Go ahead and run the two patches, hopefully you'll be done. Then install another firewall or re-enable Windows firewall until you pick one.

Correction...just run the first patch link for the uninstall. Reboot and it should be gone. The second patch was for a reinstall. Good luck this time.
