There seems to be no place to discuss forum issues, so here is as good as any, I think...

Found and reported a few spam posts today. When getting to the second, I get
Ok, it was only two today, so no big deal. But a few days ago I reported seven spam posts, and that took me 7 minutes to get it done.

I can understand the logic behind this, but on the other hand, do spammers also get a limit of 60 seconds between spam posts...?

When you report a spammer it will sometime be a while before a moderator picks up on it (they have a life away from MGs) because it is difficult to provide 24 hour moderation but you do not need to report each individual item as once it is picked up the spammer will have the IP banned from the site.

The unfortunate thing is that for every one we ban another two come out of the trees.

    Hi

Many many thanks for reporting spam posts and not replying too them as this only highlights the spammer more, so thanks for that. I hear what you are saying but "if" you are reporting the same spammers user name multiple times, while thats good, it doesnt help much as what we do with a spam report is to review that users account and all and any posts they have, then all the posts are deleted followed by their user account, this would take me around 60secs to do anyways.

*I did remove at least 10 spammers this morning including reported ones, plus ones some have not reported! no doubt if I trawl the new users list I can remove at least another 5 who have not yet posted but we know the types of account info etc*

So the upshot is I wouldnt worry about the 60secs timer and only report the spammer once, this saves you time as well as us as we all get the same report an email, which at least 5 or 6 other members may report too, so my inbox can get pretty full, for instance that spammer this morning 1 spammer had 11 report a posts from 5 members.

    Some other info HERE

I and other admins do have a personal guide to spotting potential spammers, not going into detail on this but just to say we see and remove before you see any spam or the spammer actually gets to post many many more than you actually see on this forum, to be honest the spam here compaired to other forums is very small.

We really do apprieciate and welcome the spam report threads and posts so keep em comming for out and out spam and ones your are suspect about, we can look into these and see if we feel they hit one of our guide criteria or they seem like spammer and we can monitor them.

Please dont take spam too seriously its a pain and we can remove with your/others reports but the main target of this forum is to help folk with PC issues, so that deserves more time.

Can I please add to this, that while spam is annoying, sometimes it does sit there in the middle of the night. Yes, the middle of the night is relative as I know we have people from all over the world here. But it is a fact that sometimes it will be there for a few hours after you report it. It doesn't mean we won't get to it. It just means we are asleep or off our computers.

So, to repeat what Bill and Halo stated, do Not report the same spammer more than once. I know some have 8 posts in different threads, but the system allows us to easily get all of them.

Thank you all for being so diligent. It is more than helpful in fighting this problem.:)

What??.... Life outside MG's??... what kind of dedication do you call that, we as posters and users expect the mods to make schedualed shifts so someone is ALWAYS reachable. I pm'd Halo the other day and sat at my pc refreshing every 10 seconds waiting for an answer for 2 days!!

    :-D

  12. Mimsy

I have a question on this, or rather somewhat related to this. Does this go for necro-posters as well? That would take a bit longer to look into, but at the same time it makes perfect sense you would go through and look for that as well.

The reason I'm asking is that we've had several instances in the Games forum lately with users bumping threads that are a year old, and in one case three years old! (Laura might remember that one, she is the mod who locked that thread.) I report these thread necromancers when I see them, since I'm of the firm opinion that the top threads in that forum should be the ones whose creators still need help.

So I'm wondering, if I see a case where one single user is bumping multiple very old threads, do I treat it like I do spam and just report them once, or is it easier for you guys if I report all the bumped threads? Obviously I don't care either way, but having been a mod in several forums, I want to make sure I don't create additional work for the mods here. :)

Mimsy, we have been rather flexible with post bumming when the OP is still having issues and can add additional information. I would say that those who drag up old posts should be reported so that we can either close the thread or peel off the post into it's own thread. :major

  14. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

That's what I figured. If the issue is unresolved, obviously the thread can be bumped and stay open, and I don't usually report those unless it's obviously a spam post.

The ones I'm talking about are from spring of last year or older though, which I thought was a bit too old.

    Thanks for the clarification. :)

No problem, Mims!! Just make the comment in the reported message that it needs to be either closed or spun off. Spam of course is spam. ;)

Sure, I can do that. Thanks again. :)

I know the one you're talking about, Mims. That was a case of the guy trying to be helpful, but it would have been better to just not post in a 4 year old thread.

I would just go ahead and continue to report them. Mostly, they are people asking for help who have just registered and don't know that it's better to start their own thread (the main reason, as far as I'm concerned, being that they'll get more help if people know it's a new thread. Don't worry about commenting though, because if it's reported, we can just move it to it's own thread which makes the subsequent post null. So better to just let us know.

I have found that the majority of 'help' given in old threads by a new member tends to be spam. The do searches on certain topics, it seems. Obviously, that's not always the case.

Thank you, Halo and others, for your replies.

Duly noted, reporting 1 spammer only once.

P.S. as a moderator in several other forums, I know that many spam posts originate from India, China, and other Asian countries. If you ever need a mod in this time zone, feel free to contact me. :cool

I noticed this type of post from time to time, and found them to be somewhat jarring . . . I had planned to ask a question concering them but wasn't sure how to approach the subject . . . but Mimsy I must declare the term "necro-posters" is spot on! Necromancers resurrecting a dead thread . . . perfect!:-D

. . . and this answers the question I had concerning such posts! Thank you, ladies! :)

I only wish it was that simple, alas it is not.

Great questions folks on spam, and I hope we have answered your questions, well we will do as as much as we can without giving tips on how we spot spammers, before and after they have posted (today again I found 5 that where not reported, indeed its as subtle as that at times in how they post) plus nipped another 6 in the bud before they posted.

Spam is spam and treat it as such its not the end of the world and not a great concern (ok maybe porn spam is to be removed asap) in the end, please do as you are all doing and report it and not reply to it, I know you have to bite your fingers at times, but the spammer is likely a bot and they dont read what you posted so its futile was of your time.

It should also be noted that most forum spammers do not post their garbage for our "benefit", but for search engines to boost the ranking of their websites.

One more reason never to reply to a spam post, as the spammers couldn't care less what we think of their stuff.

Wish I could take all the credit but myself, LauraR and TimW get to most of it with ACE256 and collinsl, so a team effort :major

We just love it that you troops to report these pests, helps a great deal and the filter MA put in place has cut down what you see I would say by 80% sadly we see the 80% in moderation and then delete posts and members, but as a team effort members and mods/admins we do good so again many thanks.

I'm lucky enough to be the last one that logs in during the day, so unless someone is spamming while I am here, Halo and / or Laura take care of any spam that came in during the night. ;)

My inbox may be full of reported posts, but they have been dealt with before I show up!!! Hip Hip Horray for Halo and Laura!!!
