I recently was surfing for some torrents online but accidently picked this beast instead. Please help me get rid of it. AVG can't delete it and malwarebytes/superanti are not strong enough to remove it.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Plese download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run.
    • Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Then - Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    * NOTE: You MUST uninstall AVG for ComboFix to run properly!

and then attach the requested logs to your next reply when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    * Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated - our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Okay thankyou for the help, I have ran malware bytes and it did not pick anything up so i did not feel a need to save the log. I cannot seem to get MGtools to work. I have downloaded it into my C:/ drive however all it does is open and close quickly.

    Hello, RookieVirusWrangler

I still wish to see its log and the log from SUPERAntiSpyware.
Let's find the problem with MGTools. Please download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the log: C:\MGlogs.zip

If MGtools still did not run, try doing the below.

    Boot into Safe Boot mode.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    * Should that fail -
Please click Start, All Program, Accessories and you will see ( among other things ) a Command Prompt entry.
    • Right click the Command Prompt entry and select Run As Administrator.
      • It is critical that you run it this way.
    • If you do this properly, a command prompt window will open with a title of Administrator Command Prompt.
    • Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple/brown is merely informational.
cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
GetRunKey<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
ShowNew<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • MBAMlog.txt
    • SASlog.txt

Alright I was able to get MGtools running however I was not able to get the MBAM and SAS logs. I also could not find any logs from malwarebytes/superanti spyware. If you recommend, I will re-scan with both programs and then upload the logs. Thankyou for taking the time to walk through this with me. Please let me know which steps to take next if there are any needed.

You ran scans more than once, thus you will need to attach mulitple logs from them. Please attach the below logs only ( there are more but just these are needed ):
    Code:
    "C:\Users\Jake L\AppData\Roaming\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\"
    Dec 21 2010 16574 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 12-21-2010 - 16-42-11.log"
    Dec 24 2010 13701 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 12-24-2010 - 15-24-19.log"
    Dec 25 2010 6820 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 12-25-2010 - 13-03-27.log"

    "C:\Users\Jake L\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\"
    Dec 24 2010 2358 "mbam-log-2010-12-24 (23-39-48).txt"

    Uninstall the below software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 23
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 14
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 20
    MediaBar

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\Windows\temp
    C:\Users\Jake L\AppData\Local\Temp

Now see step 4 of the READ & RUN ME and use MSconfig to put your PC into Normal Startup mode as requested.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Okay I deleted the programs as you directed however the script would not run through. I first double clickd on avenger to open it then I tried running it as administrator and both had the same effect.

Sorry about that. While making your fix, I forgot to move a few items out of the Avenger script and into a registry patch. I edited the fix. Start with Avenger again and use the current info in the thread now. Don't miss the registry patch after the Avenger fix.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

The below final instructions should answer this. ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Hey chas I was hoping you could help me with one more thing. My computer was working great after we got rid of the trojan until this morning when I tried to turn on my computer. It loaded up fine but it would not let me get to the log in. I was prompted with a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" Error. It stated "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unsual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." I did not add or delete any other software other than the programs you had told me to delete from cleaning up the trojan. Hopefully you might know what's causing this.
    Thanks.

Did this occur before or after completing ALL of my final instructions? Do you get to the point of entering your login and password?

    Does safe boot mode work?

  18. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Ah I just noticed you had another thread where you said you can boot in safe mode. But please answer my other questions.

Also is there and file or process named mentioned in the error message you receive. Give me 100% of the message and write it exactly how it is presented to you.

Also while in safe boot mode, run MSconfig and select Diagnostic Startup and see if your system boots up. You will have no internet access nor access to many other things in this mode. We just want to see if this works.

After finding out if this boot up run MSconfig again and then select Normal Startup.
    • Then go to the Services tab and at the bottom check the Hide all Microsoft Services check box.
    • Then in the top, unselect/uncheck all of these non-Microsoft services
    • The goto the Startup tab and unselect/uncheck all the listed startups.
    • Then reboot and see what happens.
Come back and tell me what happens.

Its okay thankyou for still getting back to me. I managed to do a system restore from safemode at the restore point right after I cleared my laptop of all the problems and applications. It seems to be working fine again, however I did not want to post a reply until I put some time on it and know for sure the error is gone. The only information the error gave me was what i had typed in quotes, so i really did not know where to go.

As of now, it works. However if not I will try what you had suggested below and let you know how it goes.

  20. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Okay then the problem was not related to the cleaning process and is related to something that occurred afterwards with some application you use. The reason I say this is because you just restored to a point right after the cleaning and all is good.
