Hi, I have read previous threads, but I need to know the starting point for me.
I removed google redirecting virus from the PC using MBM and then AVG virus checked. The AVG result list would not let me put infected files in the chest, only delete them.. which I did ( now I know it was a really bad thing to do, but too late!):cry :-D . Anway - now the PC freezes very shortly after starting, so I have your instructions to open in safe mode using msconfig, my question is which thread to follow to get going again. Do I need to load combofix to sort the freezing out and then to the cleanup ??? :confused Thanks.

The PC runs on Windows XP and all browsers were affected by redirecting malware.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

If you deleted necessary system files or registry keys, then you will need to replace/repair them to fix your problems. We have no way of knowing what you removed on your own so we cannot even guess at what your problem could be. However it is possibly that you still have malware. Thus the best starting point may be to work thru our cleaning process which is below. These instructions can be followed in safe mode if that is all you can do. However SUPERAntiSpyware will not install in safe boot mode.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi
Thanks for the link and information. Since the last mail the pc was able to start in normal mode and we have followed all your steps up to and including running super anti-spy ware. Scan completed and a list of 12 trojans.
We followed the instructions to close and reboot... and the pc is now stuck in a perpetual circuit of blue Asus motherboard screen then black blank screen, much whirring from the pc and back to the blue screen.

The pc will not even start in safe mode now either but just the same as above.

If you have any suggestions of how to break this cycle we would be very very pleased.

Hmmm this is not good. Do you happen to remember what SUPERAntiSpyware found. Any names of files, infection names, or registry keys? Based on this and what happened from running AVG, it would seem you had important system files infected and cleaning/removing them may be the cause of these problems.

Have you tried booting to Last Known Good Configuration?

What version of Windows do you have and do you have the boot CD?
