    Hi MajorGeeks!
All during April I had trouble with PC Hardware starting on April 1, and now I begin May with PC Malware trouble on May 1 :cry

There were no obvious symptoms until I booted up my PC tonight and could hardly connect to the internet (I can't even load the smilies pop-up window here on MG). I checked my modem and everything checked okay. I then ran an AV scan which revealed several infections of TrustyHound!rem which I checked to remove. As this confirmed a malware infection, I visited MajorGeeks to familiarize with the Windows 7 malware removal procedure. I presently cannot download any applications from the internet, and opening the pages I have (including this one) has been a herculean effort.

The steps I have taken thus far have been to run a SAS and a Malwarebytes scan, both of which revealed malware elements which I checked to remove, and those logs will be attached to this post. If necessary, I can download the additional tools on another PC tomorrow and transfer them via USB flash drive to this PC, but until then I am limited to the programs I have and the scans I have run. If the connection problems dissipate and I can further troubleshoot, I will add those scan logs in another post to this thread.

I presently run Windows 7 Home Premium and have a 64 bit OS.

Please advise me how best to proceed. Thank you so much for assisting me with this problem.

Late this morning, I booted my PC and found access to the internet was significantly improved. I took the opportunity to download the additional necessary tools and update existing anti-spyware tools.

I followed the R&R, ran again the SAS and Malwarebytes complete scans, and followed the additional steps I could not last night. SAS found nothing, Malwarebytes found two non-threatening entries so I took no action to remove them. The remaining logs are attached. Please let me know if therre are additional steps I should follow and if the system looks clean. Thank you.

Sorry to bump, but I'm having intermittent access to the internet, and I'm not sure if the scans completely removed the spyware.

It still caused you more delay in getting an answer.

Based on your logs, it appears that your malware has been removed. There is nothing else showing. If you are still having problems, perhaps your intermittant internet connection is related to something else. Try power cycling your router and also your cable/DSL modem and see what happens. Also try resetting your router back to factory defaults and then reprorgramming as necessare for you network settings.

Also just to be safe, run the below:

    Hi chaslang,
Thank you for checking my logs. I just ran TDSSkiller. The scan was brief (under one minute) and did not appear to find anything. The log is attached. Everything appears to be running normal now.

    You're welcome.

    Excellent! Then let's finish up.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
