"Context Menu Platinum" ransomware

I suddenly have this pop-up mess "Context Menu Platinum" that sits there for ~90 seconds and won't let you close it, minimize it, or delete it. It wants you to buy the product. How it got here I don't know.

It usually pops up when I right click on a file and try to add it to the VLC playlist.

The site that it takes you to to buy it is context-menu.com

I have looked at a bunch of forums on other sites and they have been no help at all.

Has anyone else had this problem?

In order for me to get a proper look at what's going on....

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Do you have a program named Fileminimizer installed? If so, uninstall it and see if your problem goes away.

    SAS found nothing

    MBAM found nothing

ComboFix did not run. Gave message "Access denied".

I have no idea what MGtools has to say.

I did a search for others who have had this problem and the common thread seems to be the Fileminimizer program. I have done a search of all drives with all files, including hidden files, turned on and have not been able to find it on my computer.

    CRAP!

I missed the Rootrepeal portion of this mess. Ignore the previous post #4.

    I will repost tonight.

Let's see if any of this helps in any way.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: SuggestMeYesBHO - {0FB6A909-6086-458F-BD92-1F8EE10042A0} - C:\Program Files\AutocompletePro\AutocompletePro.dll
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {64182481-4F71-486b-A045-B233BD0DA8FC} - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6EBF7485-159F-4bff-A14F-B9E3AAC4465B} - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9D425283-D487-4337-BAB6-AB8354A81457} - (no file)
    • O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {9D425283-D487-4337-BAB6-AB8354A81457} - (no file)
    • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
    • O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0024-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_24) -

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    How are things running now?

MGtools ran just fine. I posted the log in Post #4. I don't know what is in the log file because it didn't give me a synopsis report when if finished and the files are in .zip format.

ComboFix didn't run and all it said was "Access denied". The Recovery Console didn't install either. I tried the manual installation of the Recovery Console but it failed too run. I do not have a Windows installation disc.

RootRepeal didn't run either. It just sat there after I started it with a message that read "Initializing, please wait." I forgot to run iot the first time through.

Everything else said there was no problem found.

So, SAS works; MBAM works; MGtools works; and ComboFix and RootRepeal do not work.

Kestrel13!'s instructions in post #7 requires you to produce a newer C:\MGlogs.zip file, which would give her updated information.

Have not reviewed the logs yet but you need to tell me how things are running? I need to know if the fix made any difference or not.

I'm confused. The unit in general was running fine except for the ransomware/nagware that was popping up.

I downloaded a copy of Win XP sp3 to use to install the Restore Console but it says it cannot find the file c:\boot.ini.

I still have not been successful in running the two programs that failed to run.

Well what about the Context menu Platinum thing? That's what I was asking about when I said how are things running.

Try in safe mode, tell me what happens.

If safe mode fails rename Combofix.exe on your desktop to ru77ing.com and try again. (Make sure hidden files ARE set to show, you do not want to end up with a double file extension like ru77ing.exe.com I am not too concerned though, the fact that Combofix does not run is not always indicative of malwares presence. Attach the log if succesful.

I haven't had the Context Menu Platinum pop-up pop up for a couple of days. Maybe it is already killed and we (I) don't know it yet.

I just tried adding a music file to VLCs play list and it did not pop up.

A search for Fileminimizer was also unsuccessful. Perhaps we need to kill this thread and wait to see what happens in the future. We can always reopen the thread, or another like it, if it returns.

I hate intermittent problems. They make you crazy.

I will try ComboFix in safe mode and let you know what happens.

    Thanks,

    j

Here is the Combofix log file. No matter what I tried, short of uninstalling the program, it kept telling me that Avira was still active. I turned off the scheduler, guard, etc. and it still said they were active. I went ahead and ran ComboFix anyway regardless of the dire warnings.

    Thanks,

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I have one problem which has been created by doing the cleanup.

Avira Antivir no longer is enabled and nothing I have tried has worked to get it back on line.

I turned it off through the services tab in msconfig and now it is not listed there to turn it back on. I have tried several things to get it to start monitoring again but none have worked.

    Any thoughts on that?

    Thanks,

    j

I am just going to reinstall Avira. I don't want to go without an anti-virus program.
