I've recently seen a whole bunch of these spams everywhere. What are they trying to do? These are paid humans, I believe, to defeat the captcha. Where's the money in going to that site, though I haven't as yet gone there as I hate to click for no reason!:p This is where you malware fighters come in and save the day:-D

I guess it's just another wave of crap that will soon disappear as the funds dry up.

Would you spend your free time posting repeatedly deleted posts here under various aliases and most likely IP addresses? I seriously doubt that you'd be interested in that Bill.;):-D

Spam posts. You guys are doing a great job reporting them. They come in waves. So that's what my first 'to do' thing is...getting rid of 'inspirational' quotes.LOL

I'm going to say they are bots, but I'm not sure.

I haven't gone to the site and don't plan to, but can't imagine the reason for this particular spam.

LOL...I hate to say this, Bill, but keep filling it. We need to delete the crap.

I thank you very much for helping to keep the forums clean.

    Hi Laura,

I've noticed them pop up usually between 11PM and 3AM EST. That's when I'm home from work and start reporting them.

Yep. That's when they seem to come out of the hole they reside in. :-D

Yeah this website is significantly more huge, so you couldn't do it, but my VB I made it so I had to approve their account before they could post anything and if their profile had a link in it, I deleted the account and banned the IP.

But even with my teeny little site no one went to? I got like 700 a week! It was disgusting.

Major Geeks has a lot of spam filters in place, but even so, things get through. You can't completely get rid of it. They change up their emails and IPs too much so IP banning is very temporary.

100s do get blocked a day.

Wenchie...not sure what you have set up, but you might take a look at this: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=248470

    It controls a lot.

Aah, so it is bots then and so therefore captcha is dead. My boss implemented a second level captcha which has reduced the bots to like a couple a day max on a phpBB. I might go days without seeing any spam now. Good luck Wenchie.

On another forum that I used to frequent more a user actually contacted the company that all the spam led too and asked them to stop. It was an interesting reply. Not sure if it helped but it may be worth a read. I believe the links all had "China Merchandise" in the link.

And yeah they used famous quotes but they also used quotes from other threads to seem legit.

Meh, I just moved the site to a board where I don't have to pay any attention. It works out well. :p

    Hi Laura,

On a UK forum that I mod, we use the StopForumSpam to check IP addresses and emailals and usenames.
But I discovered this site for checking if an IP or username is a bot:
    BotScout.
Not sure who runs it but it has brought a few to our attention that we were not sure about, and soon red carded the blighters.

I have been reporting them when I have seen them but could not figure out what the idea behind it was, and I still cannot. :confused

    Hi Dave

Thanks:) Yeah, we use them too. StopForumSpam is actually a big part of 'GlowHost' addon for vbulletin and seems to be the best.

MA has just added some filters so hopefully we'll see some results as far as the quote crap.

Really, though, the amount of spam that gets through on our board is miniscule. MA does an awesome job of tweaking things when they need to be.

We are lucky that we have the members here who see the stuff and report it right away. So again, thank you all for doing your part in helping with the spam problem that I'm sure will continue to be an internet problem.

We use SFS too Laura, but only as a check after they're registered but not posted yet. It's quite the PITA to do. ;):-D

I like that BotScout dave. Thanks. http://bestsmileys.com/kick/2.gif

Cheers for reporting these folks, it helps and we are on these issues very quickly, at times it may take a while to get a good block in place as, you all well know spammers are sneaky buggers, so we have to do this properly.

Luckily the filter and Glowhost as well as pre-emptive options are keeping the spam at bay as much as possible and I believe are mostly on top of it, and by judging the report a posts I'm basing this on, as majority of the 60 report a posts in my inbox where from the 7 same spam posts.

So do continue reporting the posts as that's the best option over posting threads as we do see them quickly.

@Augie, I do a check of new accounts and its a huge task but reaps rewards on spotting spammer before they post, just the trick is knowing the type of email and user name accounts they use and type of naming conventions, from their you spot alot of them from the new user list.

    For your convenience.
Would it be a good idea if members were to reply to the spam thread or post with something like "Spam reported" ?
Then other members would see they don't need to report it also and the Mod's inbox would not be so full.

    Hi and no. :)

We'd prefer it just be reported. Replying to it brings attention to the post which we don't want and bumps it up to the top of the forum which we definitely don't want.

Like BILLMCC66 and DavidGP, I'm on a completely different time zone from MG, in the USA, and most other members. I get to report a very few spammers that manage to dodge their way into MG.

A very special thanks to you all in maintaining MG to be the special site it is, for us.
