My son has a wicked infection on his laptop, both Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware Portable fail midway through there scans, combo fix warns of a contamination of the package, the only thing I can get file wise is the RootRepeal report, and that is attached.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    That RootRepeal log is incomplete.
    • Have you tried running MGtools? What exactly happens?
    • Have you tried running scans in safe boot mode?
    • Is your sons account an account with administrator priviledges?
    • Are there other user accounts on the PC?
    • What actual malware problems are you having?

  3. booangler

    booangler Private E-2

At a minimum he has Windows XP Repair. Per SAS Portable, before it quits there is SVCHost-Fake, and a GenFakeAlert(ConHost), and finally GenFakeAlert.

As for MGTools it opens and closes faster than I can read it, the log files are fairly empty, but I attached them.

Tried scanning in safe mode epic fail there as well. All user accounts are administrator privileges.

I have also run Avira Recuse CD, it found infections but didn't clean them, or it did but something was left behind and the PC was reinfected.

The only logfile we want form MGtools is the C:\MGlogs.zip file. Unless we specifically ask you to post any file from inside the MGtools folder, you should not even be looking in there. ;) Are you running MGtools directly from the C drive. That is where it must be run from. Since your C:\MGtools folder is basically empty, it looks like you are not running it from the C drive but maybe are running it from somewhere else ( like a USB drive ) ???

    Try the below.

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

    • cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    • nwktst<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • analyse <-- this attempts to run HijackThis. Be sure to click the Accept button twice in the license agreement popup or it will just sit there and wait.
Now look for the C:\MGlogs.zip file and attach it no matter what happened while doing the above.

Very bad idea to do this.

Be very careful with Rescue CDs and only use when there is no other alternative. When you boot your PC from a Rescue CD, Windows is not running and hence there is no Windows File Protection in place and necessary Windows operating system files could be found to be infected and deleted which could render your PC unbootable. It does not always happen, but it could. Before running scans, with disks like this, it is wise to first use this kind of boot CD to backup important data.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hmmm! This is not good. I don't see how removing all those with Avenger would could a problem like this. Do you have your Windows XP boot CD? See the below from Microsoft:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316401

However I do wonder if it is just that your MBR was infected and perhaps running fixmbr from the Recovery Console could fix it.

Many apologies for the delay. I just couldn't remember to bring home the install CD.

Anyway FIXMBR was a success. I can now boot to XP and log in. Awaiting your suggested next steps.

    Thanks,

Here are the log files as requested. Additionally I have no desktop when I boot up.

Additionally, there is an error msg that "Windows cannot find 'c:\DOCUME~1\Jake\LOCALS~1\Temp\csrss.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and the click search."

Then a second msg that I mistakenly clicked through.

Third Error - Error loading C:\windows\acuqocub.dll The specified module could not be found.

When I go to Start - All Programs all is see is OpenOffice.org 3.1 none of the other folders or apps are there.

Started Firefox and received "The proxy server is fefusing connections. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

Started IE, seeing a Plasmoo search provider. No favorites in the favorites folder. Windows updates reports that I am not logged in as an Administrator even though the account I am using does have Administrator privileges.

Please download and save the below tool from Grinler @ bleepingcomputer to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Now see if you can find the items that seemed to be missing?

Now see step 4 of the READ & RUN ME FIRST and use MSconfig to put your PC into Normal Startup mode. You are still in selective startup. Do not reboot if MSconfig tells you to. Just exit it without rebooting. We will reboot in my next fix to be posted but I want to get you started on the above.

Also please delete the current MGlogs.zip file you have. You seem to have logs appending end to end somehow.

Ran everything as instructed. "Maxis" is directory for the game SIM Tower and "EREG" is the Electronic REGistration directory for Maxis. I cannot give specifics about EREGLIB.DLL, MAXIS.EXE, MAXIS.ICO, MAXIS.URL, my guess is they are related to Sim Tower in some way.

Removed both SAS####.com as I loaded those. No errors when I merged the registry entries. There were some errors during the running of the Avenger Script, which I am sure will be found in the avenger.txt file.

On rebooting the computer I received the previously documented error messages 'Windows cannot find 'c:\DOCUME~1\Jake\LOCALS~1\Temp\csrss.exe'. Loading Firefox I am still seeing the message 'The proxy server is refusing connections. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections'. It will not load any pages.

EI starts but cannot load pages. Plasmoo is still showing as a search engine. IE pops up the following url regardless of what you type 'http:///?%20www.bigseekpro.com/search/dns/hypercam/%7B853BC227-26C0-4F0F-82C6-877888689FC1%7D?q=windowsupdate.microsoft.com'.

I think that covers it for now.

    Thanks, Alan

You need to reset it to not use a proxy ( that is unless you need to use a proxy. See the below link:

    Proxy Server - Changing Settings

See if you can manually delete it .

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Then reboot your PC.

After reboot run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Okay those are looking better.

Now goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller.

After running TDSSKiller ( and rebooting if it found any problems), see if you can run ComboFix as requested in the READ & RUN ME FIRST.

What is in the below folder?
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Jake\Local Settings\Application Data\"
    {249D1~1 Jul 1 2011 "{249D10EA-8298-46DF-8DF0-420C31272551}"

See if you can delete the below folder.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Plasmoo

Have you checked your IE settings to make sure that no proxy is being used? I see one setup and you need to follow the same link I gave you to remove the proxy on IE to.

I ran TDSSKiller no threats found. I ran ComboFix with no problems, it did make a number of changes.

I was able to remove the PLASMOO folder, but I did not find the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\Jake\Local Settings\Application Data\"
{249D1~1 Jul 1 2011 "{249D10EA-8298-46DF-8DF0-420C31272551}'. It might have been cleaned up by ComboFix. I did verify that viewing of hidden files, system files and file extensions was enabled to view.

IE is working fine after running ComboFix, I even received notification that Updates were now available.

I have MG logs if you need them, I am not going to upload them since you didn't ask for them.

Now we need to use ComboFix again
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You did not run the last fix properly. You just ran ComboFix by double clicking on it. You need to make the CFScript.txt file as requested and you need to drag and drop it onto ComboFix to have the fix work. Note, I added something to the fix too so make the CFScript.txt file again if you had already made it.

Okay that took care of a few minor details. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Did you already run the final cleanup instructions? If not already run then do not run them. Just get me a new log from MGtools.

When exactly did the problem with wireless begin? Were you using wireless all along? In message 29 you said all was good. At that time were you on a wireless connection?
