Should have been more careful...

My desktop is acting funny and has hung unexpectedly several times. Just as a precaution, I decided to go thru XP Malware removal/cleaning procedures and cleanup a bit.

Downloaded all five recommended software packages; installed SUPER AntiSpyWare. The updates and downloads appeared to download/run fine. However, when I clicked on SAS desktop icon, I get warning
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Tried loading SAS twice to same results. I am logged on as ADMINISTRATOR.

    Awaiting further instructions. Thanks.

As stated in the beginning of the READ & RUN ME, just continue on.

    Here's the current status:

    1. Ran SAS portable version. After identifying 12 threats, the app quickly shut down. Don't know if any repairs were performed, there are not logs to be found, etc.

    2. Proceeded to MB Anti-Malware and completed update. Quick scan ran for a few seconds, then stopped. Screen cleared to desktop; any subsequent attempts to start MB again resulted in message "Windows cannot access...

    3. Moved comboFix to desktop and ran. ComboFix found a RootKit infection; instructed to NOT do manual reboot...only desktop picture, no icons...waiting for computer to re-awaken...already 20 minutes.

Will post this and log back in again later.

After waiting for about 90 minutes, I decided to reboot system; ComboFix restarted and completed.

    4. Ran RootRepeal and MGTools; both ran to completion; logs attached.

Tried to rerun both SAS and MB, received message "Window cannot access..."

    Awaiting further instructions.

    Thanks.

I reinstalled both SAS and MB and no longer get the message "windows cannot..."

Also, ran both apps to completion and have attached their logs.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Also, please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Are you currently having any malware problems? If so, please describe them.

Ran TDSSKiller and MBRCheck; logs attached.

As for any signs of additional malware...no.

No further problems with warning message "Windows cannot access..."

System appears to be functioning properly.

    Awaiting your final assessment.

    Thank you again Chaslong

MBRcheck is showing an unknown MBR on your second drive

76 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive1 Unknown MBR code

This may not be a problem as the drive may have just a non-standard and unrecognize master boot record. Since you are not having any problems, I would suggest leaving it alone. If however you find you are still having problems, I would suggest backing up the data on this second hard disk to your first hard disk and then rewriting the MBR with a stanard Windows XP MBR.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks Chaslang,

I will perform the steps described to closeout this adventure. Rescued again! I think I know how i got the RootKit infection. Would SAS and/or MB, either together or separately, provide protection?

Could the MBRCheck have found a backup which I had saved on the second drive? I had run XP's backup and for some reason could not use a DVD writer to save the copy, so had to put it on the second drive.

Another gold star to this site and especially to all the experts who faithfully, volunteer their time and knowledge to help unfortunates, like myself.

    You're welcome.

Then avoid that activity in the future. ;)

Potentially they could help but no protection will protect you from you. Only one of these with active protection ( i.e., the paid version ) should be used.

No. It is only looking at the master boot record, not the files system.

Possibly because the file was too large for a standard single layer DVD. You have about 6 GB used on this second drive. If that is from just one backup, it would not fit on a single layer DVD.
