    Hi,

My ISP has notified my that my computer is infected and will shut down my internet connection if I don't remove the malware. This is my second computer with a similar virus.

I don't know if this desktop is infected with the same malware as my laptop.

I need your help I can't afford to lose my internet access.

    Thanks

Like in your other thread for your other PC, you need to attach the log from MGtools that was requested.

Also in this thread, you need to attach the log from RootRepeal

Okay I'll be asking for the below in both of your threads.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Hi,

I ran TDSSkiller and it did not find any viruses. However, MBRCheck did find boot code as fake, and I did a repair.

You did a repair of what and with what and how? You should only be doing what we ask you to do.

    Hi,

I am sorry if I did something I shouldn't have. When I ran MBRCheck it found a faked boot sector, and then it gave me an option to ignore or repair. I chose repair.

Yes and it is highly probable that it did not fix it which is why you should only do what we ask. My instructions specifically told you to exit the program. They did not say to fix it. In addition, repairing the MBR could cause a PC to become unbootable. We would have told you to backup your important data first.

Run a new MBRcheck scan and attach the new log and let's see if anything changed. The correct drive has to be fix. Your problem was not on your Windows boot drive but on an external drive. This drive could also be disconnected from your computers to see if the problem you have goes away when this drive is unplugged.

Ok, I am sorry I messed it up.

Looks like you got lucky and did not have one of the more serious infections which MBRcheck could not self fix. The MBR appears to be okay now. You should check with your ISP to see if they still notice a problem.

Thanks for your help Chaslang. Was the virus the W32.IRCbots or whatever the name is?

    You're welcome.
No not specifically that we can tell. All we could tell is that you MBR was modified. There are many types of MBR infections. Some open back doors to steal information, some can download additional infections, and some could open up connections to bot networks but that is not some we could tell from these scans. A more detailed analysis of the packets entering and leaving your PC would be required. That is what your ISP was likely doing via some automatic process that was catching questionable traffic and ports known to be sometimes used by infections.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks again Chaslang. I will speak with my ISP today and hope they are happy.
How do I clean-up my external hard drive?

    Hi,

I have several backup files that I am concerned might be compromised, and I would like to know how I can make sure they are clean of any malware.

Can Norton Security clean them of malware? Some of the files were backed up using backup software, and others are files that I've copies.

    You're welcome.

You make sure it is plugged in and selected for scanning. ;) You can scan it with Norton, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Malwarebytes.

Like any program, Norton can only clean what it can find and what it has the ability to clean. Sometimes cleaning means deleting when there is no ability to "cure".
