I started having multiple issues - pop up windows playing videos, computer trying to save files (I'd come back with multiple windows open asking if I wanted to open or save files I'd never tried to access), and FF Google redirect.

I downloaded and ran Avast and Spybot. That seemed to stop the boxes popping up asking about file download. It also stopped the popups. The redirect was still there. Then Spybot started causing an issue where the screen was black after the login screen, after a reboot. Uninstalling Spybot cleared that up (thread about that issue here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1693634#post1693634)

The only remaining issue was the browser redirect, so I started following the steps in the browser redirect thread. GooredFix seemed to solve that. I haven't had any redirects.

I attached the log from that.

Do you recommend that I continue and take any further steps, since I am currently symptom free, or should I stop here? I just want to check, since I had multiple issues.

I am trying to tread very carefully, as I have a large number of photographs that I haven't backed up.

Yes, let's make a more thorough check.

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

Then continue on immediately with these instructions then attach all of the requested logs at the end.

The logs look great. Just a couple of things.

Java(TM) 6 Update 21 <--- Uninstall this as it is now outdated.

    What is this?
    C:\Users\Ashley\Desktop\yqmgvuafik.tmp

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Will do!

I have absolutely no idea what that desktop file is. It didn't appear until I started running all of the scans. (Though it says it was modified in July '11)

It was always there. You just did not see it before because it is a hidden file. I believe this is part of Dell DataSafe Online. Quite a stupid place to put it and even a more stupid name to use. I guess they want their files to be deleted due to being suspected as malware which is what this looks likes.

Ah, that makes sense! Though I agree that the file name does not. I don't even use Dell DataSafe. I should get around to uninstalling that.

Then that would be a good thing to do since it is using a bunch of system resources. You should uninstall anything that you don't use.

Since Kestrel13! said your logs are good, you should work through the below now.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    All done.

Uninstalled Java, rebooted and reinstalled per Kestrel's instruction. I also uninstalled all of that Dell software bloat. Made the suggested changes and installed some more tools (Comodo firewall and CCleaner). Already had Avast... I had all of those installed on this particular computer before, but my hard drive died and had to be replaced by a Dell tech, and I didn't bother reinstalling. Just left the McAfee that came on it, which expired.

I know, I know. Bad me. I know better.

I am hesitant to download Spybot again, since it caused that black screen issue for me. Do you think it's safe to download it again, now that my PC is clean?

Spybot should not be causing you a problem, however if you run into the same problem again, just stop using it or try disabling Teatimer if you have been enabling that.
